Poll: Do You Like Loud Or Quiet Jets?

Fri Oct 06, 2006 2:46 pm

I wish i was in Seattle during the 70's when all the 727's were flying. I love loud jets instead of the new quiet jets. Robert NWDC10

Tough one.

I like the rumble of older jets, but prefer the aggressive fan sounds of the newer ones.

As a passenger, especially on longhauls: the quieter, the better.

As an aviation enthusiast... well... the quieter, the better.

I like all jet sounds, loud and quiet, but personally I prefer the roar of turbojet and low-bypass ratio fanjet engines. During the 1960s and early 1970s I would spend considerable time on the outside observation areas on the East and West arcardes of the 1952 EWR terminal, watching and listening to the sounds of piston, turboprop and jet aircraft. It was loud and I was in heaven. After moving to the Chicago area I discovered Midway Airport. Up through about 2001 there were regular wire fences separating the airfield from the sidewalks. I would often stand at the corner of Central and 55th (or 63rd) St or Cicero Ave and 55th St and watch planes line up for takeoff on the nearby runways (4-22/L-R or 13C). They were only a few hundred feet away. The roar of a 727S (or DC9S or 737S or Gulfstream) spooling up to takeoff power literally shook my whole being. It was quite the thing. I loved it! Unfortunately there was one slight side effect -- my hearing isn't quite as good as it used to be!

Great thread! I personally love it when the 727 and the MD-80 take off, but I also love the sounds of the newer quieter engines and the whine they produce.

Depends on whether you're the passenger or a spectator. I love when those old maddogs take off from CPH Big grin The sound is incredible and it is even more incredible when they rotate and climb like a rocket and you can see the black smoke trail behind them  Smile

But as a passenger I prefer the modern, silent ones  Smile

I want to hear a loud guts shaking jet. I wish there was I jet that needed low by-pass engine that was the size of a GE-90:D

I love it when the FED EX 727 take off from Norfolk International, it just race to the sky with that classic 727 rouble.

I love loud jets.
Although the newer ones do sound rather interesting, that
loud jet sound can't be beat.
I can't sleep on planes, so might as well enjoy the loudness!

Being up front on the MD-88 is awesome. Truly quiet and you can barely hear the engines accelerate on takeoff. Being in the back, however sucks.... The roar of the engines throughout the entire flight is extremely annoying. I experienced both. On friday I sat in 37B from RIC-ATL and today I sat in 10D from ATL-RIC. It's a remarkable difference.
The proper term is "on final" not "on finals" bud...

Yeah it is really quiet and super comfortable up front  Smile I was upgraded to biz this summer flying NCE-CPH flying with SK using an MD. I almost wish the flight would have been longer  Smile

As a passenger, quieter is better.

As a spotter, anything is good, but loud usually means classic, and nothing beats seeing a classic plane.

I just remembered, one jet flew over head and i hear the engine but i didn't hear the typical "roar". It was cool though even though i like loud jets. I don't know what jet engines they were. Robert NWDC10

If I'm on a short flight and taking it just for fun then the aircraft can be as loud as it likes, and I'll sit at the very back just to hear the noise if I'm on a MD aircraft! However, if I'm on a long flight and have to be sat in the same seat for hours on end then I'll go for something which is quieter, normally I choose A340 over the 747 because of this. (I'm not starting an A vs B here, just my own preference).

Loud-JT8D loud. I love the particular sounds of the different engines, and considering I practically grew up on the DC-9, well...  Wink

Go Loud or Go Home!!!  Smile

My favorite has to be the 727s for their wonderful whine.
DC9s are a close second for sound quality & volume.

When I was much younger, I brought a tape recorder with a quality microphone on board an Air Canada 727 , then I played the tape at home on my older brothers massive stereo - It really allowed me to relive that flight.

I will go out of my way to fly on an NW DC-9. I think that says it all. I have never started a thread about NW DC-9s, but I have replied to many.

I live very close to DTW and I see lots of NW DC-9s. I love the classics too. I also see a lot of classics (like DC-8s, DC-9s, and occasional what ever) flying in and out of YIP.

I prefer loud jets. I was at a house in Point Loma, California and an AA Mad Dog would fly over every minute or so. The sound was just amazing. I felt bad for the people who had to hear that every day, but it was great for me.

For some reason that loud crackling sound of the engines puts me to sleep on flights. All I have to do is lean against the window and I'm out in minutes.

As close as Point Loma is to NAS North island, an airliner is the least of there noise problem. Remember F-14 when the USN had them, F-18 and EA-6B fly into NAS North island a lot and F-14 and F-18 has little mercy on the ears and the EA-6B has none.

By the way, is an AA Mad Dog an AA MD80 or AA 727?

Still get the odd 743 in AKL. I love that noise when its coming into land! Whether I like loud or quiet ones depend on the situation.. If the daily 727F to Sydney departed any later, I would hate it. The roar continues for ages. For the quiet ones I enjoy the 77W noise quite frequently living under the flightpath en-route to AKL these planes come quite low. I reckon with a good camera I would be able to take some nice pics!
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

I love quiter jets off course... The A346's are one of the quietest I have ever been on. But, so far the quitest has got to be the MD-90 (SV)!! The engines are way on the back and I was seated 1A, wich means that the plane is almost engineless when it comes to noise.

Hi Everyone.

Hands down, no question about it: Loud! And, the aircraft of choice? 737-200!

Those raucous engines spooling up and down and up and down - AWESOME! And, as a former 1K with United, I used to have my choice of seats; I'd always take an over-wing exit seat so I could be inundated by the whining, roaring, blaring symphony just outside my window.

Now THOSE were the days...

Blessings, N31029

Not me. I like them loud. That's how I know whenever the ER 727 flies over when departing to PTYBig grin

Personally, I have a very sweet spot for the venerable 727 and the 737-100/200, both the first planes I've ever flown.

Yes I agree, the MD-90 is by far the quietest I have been on. As for the loud ones, nothing beats the roar of a 727 on take off but the 747 is a close second.
There's nothing quite like a trijet.
