Do Shabby Aircraft Worry You?

Sun Oct 08, 2006 4:01 pm

Last week I flew Iberia for the first time, BCN-LHR. Now I have read all sorts of things on here about IB but I was open minded about it. However once on board the 320 and having a look around I began to wonder....

I know that this is not a safety critical item but we all know how hysterical some people can get. Do you worry when you see things like this? There were several other applications of white tape to panels and quite a number of the lights were inop too.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

I have traveled several times on airplanes that were "repaired with tape" in the interior and I wasn't worried at all. The only time when I said "oops, is this really that good" was on a DL flight ATL-SFO, on a B767. I sat next to the wing and saw that the first metal layer of the wing was gone on an area maybe 10cm x 10cm showing a metal net structure. Anyway, I relied on DL's mechanics and nothing went wrong Wink.

Going to your orignal topic I would say yes. It's probably not logical but subconsiously if the aestehics of the aircraft don't seem to be taken care of your mind will automicaticaly wonder if the mechancal aspects have been ignored as well.

One time I was in Costa Rica and on a United 757-200 that broke down on the runway (engine failure). That was bad enough but the airline booked me on an Ameircan Airlines flight to Miami aboard an old A300 that was in horrible condition. Every squeak and rattle made me uncomfortable and the interior was straight out of the 70's but the fact is that no airline would take chances with shoddy maintenance and despite the horrible appearance of the aircraft I'm sure it was airworthy and very safe.

In my experience, if the cabin tech log has not been picked up and actioned its because the engineers are fixing more important things! Kinda reasuring then to see tape in the cabin.

It might not make a big difference but mentally you always think that this aircraft is not taken care of and isn't as safe as it could be.

I have to say I would be shitting myself if an aircraft was repaired like that. Luckily witht he wonders of British Aviation, I don't have to worry that much especially as I only reallly ever travel on either TOM or BA

Depends on the airline - seeing it on IB, it would not worry me, seeing it on some fourth-rate African airline somewhere in the jungle, it would worry me a bit.

When I see things like that, it tells me that the aircraft isn't fresh from heavy maintenance. That reassures me, as that is when a serious mistake could be made. If it's been flying a while, then it's probably flight-worthy. On the other hand, I can see how a tattered cabin could make some people uneasy.

No, not me personally, as I know that the aircraft would not be allowed to fly unless mechanically sound - as in the Charter flights that we go on from here in the UK. However, our flight from EMA last year to Greece with a British Charter was on a very dishevelled MD80 DC9 - I dont have the pictorial proof to show you but it was in dire need of new upholstery and some of the seat fittings had bolts etc missing. There was also tape etc holding things in place at the back of the plane where the loos are.

While it may not be crucial to the airplanes ability to fly properly, I generally prefer to be in an airplane that seems to be in tiptop shape, mean no tape, no missing panels etc. To be quite honest, for everything counts in the air, and I don't like to have doubts. And tape on the inside of an airplane is not very reassuring, esp to passengers who don't know much about airplanes. As my grandmother says, there is no where to park up there. Big grin

Singapore_Air,

You probably should let people know that they are trying to keep the condensation from the air conditioning from dripping. It has nothing to do with maintenance. How gullible do you think people on this website are? Oh wait...don't answer that!  banghead

They don't worry me too much, what does worry me is when I fly on an airline like Iran Air, which I know has an issue in getting spare parts for its aircraft. Actually carriers like Air Atlanta also worry me, I really don't trust them not to cut corners, especially considering how their 747s leased to IB performed tech wise!
