What Airliners Has The Best Climb Out's?

Mon Oct 09, 2006 10:09 am

For me, when I think of airliners that has the most impressive climb out after take off, there are two that stands out. The MD11's and 757 and even though I am not a 767 fan, I have to admit it has a nice climb out also. I wish I had a chance to fly on a MD11, for a plane it size it is a rocket. Big grin

The 757, with the right engines (someone help me out here - the RR's?), is an over-powered sled rocket. Combined with a low take-off speed, it is ideal in places like PHX and LAS in the summertime, when most planes are weight restricted.

Okay, I'm biased - it's my favorite narrow-body plane. But it is the best plane to have on a short runway!!

I took off on an AA MD80 out of ORD once...

I swear we were more vertical than the space shuttle...  thumbsup  I instantly imagined the FO saying to the pilot: "Get 'em, Mav"...

I also concur with the 757 and MD11... got to fly the MD11 once on a short MCO - ATL leg and I don't think we stopped climbing until we started decending for ATL!

The 757 is simply a rocketship... I love it!  Big grin

I did get a chance to experiance the MD-11 climbout-quite a ride! As for the MD-88, it has a high speed climbout too. While at aviation camp, our counselor (who was a DL MD-88 captain) told me that with a light load, the -88 can attain a vertical speed of 6500 fpm.

I think the Climb rate of the B744 is powerful as well as the B773ER

Well it always depends on lots of things: how much weight? How far do they have to fly? What type of engines? What airline is operating it? Other than that the B757 does very well and so do B738 and A319. O and not to forget A310.

I remember an AA pilot commenting on the engines of a 757..."It's over powered, but fun to fly"

I was going to say the MD80 is not a rocket by any means. At times it feels like it struggles to get off the ground (think A340).

Yea ive heard of Mad Dogs hitting 6000FPM, also the 75s.

Personally my vote goes to the Dornier 328JET, slow as crap in the cruise but its a rocket getting up to speed!

This is going to sound like BS but the most amazing climb I ever felt was in an A340-600! But, it was at an airshow, at the start of the flying display, we were only a few pax no cargo and minimal fuel  Smile

In commercial service it would have to be a 747SP, that thing was a rocketship!

I experienced the most powerful climbout on a very light loaded CR7 while taking-off in FRA for the short 30 minute hop to DUS, it was real fun! But I have no idea if the CR7 is as powerful when it is fully loaded with pax and cargo.

As others have said, you'll get the best take off experience on a lightly loaded aircraft, when the pilot feel like having a bit of fun and using lots of power! Aircraft I've had good fun takeoffs with are;

- MD11 (with 36 people on it)
- B757-200, even with a good load its fun!
- Fokker 100.
- MD87, has superb power even with a full cabin.

I loved the MD80 when the flight was pretty empty.. would go like a rocket.

However, I've been on them when they are heavy, and they can take some loooooong takeoff rolls.

The 757-200 must win hands down. The best looking, sexiest airliner ever invented.

Has everybody seen the picture of the first NW 757 with winglets? It's on the homepage right now......  Smile

I was a guest on Concorde once when it was used to close an Air Show. Before take off the Captain advised us the cabin crew would be checking our seat belts very carefully as he intended doing manouvres not normally used on a scheduled flight!

We roared off like a rocket and seemed to soar upwards at the steepest angle I can remember of any take off before or since. Then we did a figure of eight loop over the airport and roared off again.

Needless to say it was the most exciting flight of my life!

Ahhh, fellow nutters . . . let us not forget the infamous B727. Like a rocket off the runway . . . and damn good looking too!
