Suggestions Wanted - Transatlantic Business Class?

Fri Oct 27, 2006 6:31 am

I have a once of lifetime opportunity to fly business class to Florida for the Superbowl weekend, usually when I fly it's always deep discounted economy (when paying myself), even economy when corporate travel (we have this >12 hour unbroken time in air for business class, policy).

Since I have no clue about business class, I need suggestions. My options:

GOT-AMS-BOS-DTW-FLL-MEM-AMS-GOT (KL/NW), GOT-AMS-ATL-MIA.FLL-MEM-GOT (KL/DL), GOT-CDG-MIA-PTP-ORY.CDG-GOT (AF, tight connection ORY/CDG). I don't know if NW still flies the B747-200 on MEM-AMS in February, I'd really like to fly "upstairs".

Suggestions Wanted - Transatlantic Business Class?

Well as it seems you need to fly to FLL/MIA from GOT, I would reccomend British Airways and Virgin Atlantic (GOT-LHR-MIA). You would have to fly SAS between GOT and LHR:

GOT-LHR - SK M80
LHR-MIA - BA 744/VS 346

Secondly I would reccomend AF/KL between GOT and FLL/MIA:
GOT-CDG - AF BAe-142
CDG-MIA - AF

GOT-AMS - KL 737
AMS-ATL - KL 332
ATL-FLL - DL 752/763/M88

Minus the fact that he didn't mention either one of those as one of his options.

Europe has not seen scheduled NW 747 service since about 2-3 years ago. MEM-AMS was never a 742, it will be an A330 when you fly it.

Fly NW/KL, its just easier that way.

Just in case you don't know. The Superbowl is corporate America's biggest party. It begins almost a week before the game, corporations send exec's, customers, employee's to the festivities early. It is ton of fun even if you miss the game itself. I'm just advising you that in case you have an option to come early, you might have a better chance of getting the flight, aircraft and seat you want and the time spent will not be wasted.

Looks like I go with KL/NW. FlyMatt2Bermud, I will arrive on February 1st so I guess that leaves me plenty of time, but thanks for the input. I guess that chances of overbooking (and compesation) will be high... Not that ATL or DET will play in Superbowl, but due to connections.

Problem with connecting in DTW is that I would arrive 11:59 pm on the 1st, I rather take a stopover and spend one night in DTW, arriving 9:20 am on the 2nd instead.

I guess NW and KL offer the same business class product?

If your flying WBC/FC then you don't have anything to worry about.

Pretty much, slightly different look in seats, but for the most part its the same.

My options

From my experience:
Avoid any tight connections at CDG (even in Business Class), leaving only AMS for transfers if staying at SkyTeam.

Personally I like the product that DL delivers in their BusinessElite very much (I prefer it over AF); the B777 gives you a lot of space; even the B763 is more than okay.

In February the KL-flight to ATL would be a A330 (haven't used them yet; my last KL Business Class flight was too long ago to really count, but it was good - upper deck in B74M).

Question: Have they been pretty close to the same ever since they have had the tight NW/KL alliance? Or did it take them a few years to get where they are today?

How many flights are operated jointly between the 2 on a given weekday?

I agree. DL's business elite service is better than AF's business class.

Once the alliance began, it was just a couple years before they started making a joint product, they pretty much made NW and KLM have the same service, so that it was like flying on the same airline all the way through, other then the colors and planes, its pretty much the same deal to this day.
