What To Expect From Air India

Thu Nov 02, 2006 12:41 am

My dad and I are thinking about flying JFK-LHR on Air India in May. I don't know much about this airline in terms of service. I noticed their 744s come from a variety of different airlines. Does anyone know if a certain version do the JFK route? What kind of service do they offer?? Thanx

Expect lots of free booze, good food (both Indian and Western - and lots of it), lousy (or out of order) IFE on their own 744 aircraft, a hit or miss on working PTVs on the leased SQ planes.

Take your own iPod. The rest should be just fine. I'm assuming the fares are dirt cheap.

Blimey! My dad and I are looking at doing the same thing (and same time of year too!)

I'm assuming they'll treat JFK as one of their flagship routes? Assuming that's true, they should in theory put the best aircraft on that route.

Anyone got any photos inside the "new" 744s?

... and not the brand names in Y. Hey a wide body for a 6 hour flight is not bad. Can't get that for transcon flights in the US. Expect to get good service if you appear to be any thing other than a FOB. Wish they would reserve a bathroom for the non-lotta crowd!!!!

Their first aircraft is still undergoing cabin fitting----40 days were said for the time [About a month has passed lets see after 10 days what it looks like]

Oh BTW the KE aircrafts will be gone by then---and if you aree remotely lucky you could get the wet leased 343s [if the deal goes through]

The first i am hearing of 744s being refurbhised. That great news.

I had flown them last year from FRA-BOM. The service was awesome. Much better than what you get from any US carrier. The interiors were tired looking, but clean. Food was awesome. They even distributed menu's in Y class. The IFE was the communal bulkhead screen. Overall it was a good experience.

Thanx for the replies. Browsing on Air India's website looking at seating configurations, it states that "smoking and non-smoking sections are marked." I find it hard to believe that a major airline would still offer smoking. Is that just an out of date section of their website?

It's been years since I've flown them (think the 70's) JFK-LHR-JFK but I have one funny memory to share. We pulled from the gate about an hour late. I was non-reving at the time and was bumped off PA. With a slashed ID-90 (relic, I know) I ran to AI who boarded me.

We pulled from the gate and were served sweets (hard candies) to help with the altitude (nice touch). However, the f/a's didn't have time to do the emergency procedures. Before the f/a's had finished doing the sweets distribution we were flying down the runway. No announcement from the cockpit the girls (all girls at the time) were running down the aisle to grab their jumpseats with saris flying.

When we reached 10,000 feet they got up and did the emergency procedures demonstration. No one seemed to notice. I was a bit stunned but laughing.
