The Best Airline Food...

Tue Nov 07, 2006 3:03 am

Ok, so which airline offers the best inflight catering?

In my personal experience, I was really impressed with Emirates and British Airways.

I've also heard great things about Air India (and indeed most of the airlines in India!)

Quoting Vasu (Thread starter):
British Airways

I couldn't agree more, it is indeed very tasty. Here are some pictures of my recent BA flights LHR-SFO and PHL-LHR:

The first photo shows salmon, mashed potatoes and peas, the second one pork with vegetables and rice. That cheesecake was also delicious.

Emirates have some great food! It is just as good if not better than some well known London restaurants.
This may sound biased but for a low cost airline, aerlingus food is good in business and Euro short haul. Long-haul economy food is poor and is nothing compared to EK or BA!

Domestic: CO
International: NW (only one I flew)

1. Air France
2. Emirates (never tried but from what I've seen in the reviews and photos on www.airliners.net, they seem in the top tier in catering).
3. Singapore
4. British Airways
5. Tie: All Nippon/Asiana/Cathay Pacific

Honorable mention: Just because they still do some sort of meal service on US Domestic flights, I give Contiental this. (Their full hot meal service in Y is mediocre but in BF superior).

I'm hoping with all that Delta is doing to improve their reputation and the service upgrades, they will do the same with catering in the main cabin. The BOB they had when Song was still flying was awesome. It would be nice to see them bring back the great catering they once had before 9/11.

Sun Country. Hands down. They feed everyone on every flight. Sometimes more than once!  Smile

SZATK (North-West Air Transport Company) more know as Vyborg. Domestic flight VOG-LED at Il-114 - economy class only.

As international companies reduce their service Russian carriers try to impove it. Even if it is just delay in marketing - I just enjoy it.  Wink

Emirates was highly enjoyable, the few times I've flown them, but British Airways always tends to be consistently good. The two or so times I've flown Singapore, the food was great, but I've heard mixed reviews from those who fly them more frequently.

Domestic though, I would have to say Continental  Smile

There was no choice of lasagna on that flight, only on the other one, and there I didn't feel like it. I took the fish because I never was offered fish on a plane before. Is the BA lasagna supposed to be especially good?

I have had my best AND worst food on the same airline (different flight) = KLM

Really good:
C-class: A great beefstew with veggies and mashed potatoes
M-class: Chicken with rice dish and an Indian curry sandwich

Nasty:
C-class: Fish dish with green salad (I don't like fish and this was the only thing left), the green salad was dry and didn't look/taste fresh  yuck
M-class: the Dutch style cheese sandwich ("wit puntje kaas"), IIRC this is replaced by a better Unilever-brand sandwich

Also good:
- SQ sate and fried rice
- NW hot breakfast-sandwich/egg-muffin (don't know if they still serve them, it's been a few years ago on a domestic LAX-MSP)

Economy - Thomas Cook Airlines

BA biz food has gone downhill since they sold Skychefs (if I remember the correct company name), the portions are smaller and they have a less of a selection on the cheese plate that I really liked.

To LAD, BA was much better then AF.

From MIA across the pond, AA biz was better then AF biz (on a clunker 747 upper deck with a busted TV).

BA is better the KLM across the pond (pre AF merger).

I think that BA is probably the most consistent though, but it was better before selling off their catering service.

When flying cattle class on any carrier, I always buy some food at the airport, it will be better. When the rubber chickens on plastic trays come rolling down the aisle, I'm munching on a fat roast beef sandwhich, cheese, mayo, salt pepper and a large bag of jalapeno chips.

The TAM Ham sandwhich deserves an honorable mention!
