I don't know how many planes it is, but they said on a tv program on Discovery Channel that about 260 000 people is in the air at the same time

Just for an idea, have a look at the Star Alliance screensaver, it shows you the flights of the different members at the same time...

Flightaware.com will give you an indication of the number of IFR flights over the US at any given moment..

It would almost impossible to calculate all the aircraft in the air at any given time I heard from somewhere that in their heyday that there was a PA aircraft departing or arriving at an airport around the world every 5 seconds. and thats just one airline.

Not to mention all the military flights, general aviation flights, etc...

But if you are just talking commercial, Star Alliance alone generally has about 1000-1500 planes up in the air at any given time, and that's just one alliance. It's probably upwards of 10,000 but Star Alliance is pretty big though. But if I had to guess, I'd say roughly 10,000.

In the US around 1800-2000 GMT, the usual is around 5000 IFR aircraft, with another 5000 VFR. The count is close to the same about 6 hours later.
