Which Engine Is Really The Best For The 777?

Mon Nov 27, 2006 7:55 am

In the comparison chart made from data take right off of Boeing's website, it seems that GE would be the best option for the 777 (-200ER). However, other airlines have opted otherwise. Why exactly?

Do the RR engines burn more but fly further?

  • Simple preference. Some airlines prefer P&W or RR when they have the option.
  • Commonality. While the engines and their parts may not be interchangeable, chances are it's easier for the mechanics to be trained within the same manufacturer due to a common design philosophy, if nothing else.
  • Performance. But not the way you might think. Sometimes, you don't need the most powerful engine out there, so a less-powerful engine might offer greater fuel economy or longer maintenance intervals that make it a better fit.
