Best Way To Get To JNU From FRA

Thu Nov 30, 2006 4:09 am

Hey there guys...

I am planning a trip to Alaska next year in May.

I want to start in JNU, then ANC and FAI and then back home to FRA...

Has anyone a good idea which flights or which route I can take? I thought about Condor! They fly FRA-ANC-FRA... but being in that shit old 763s for so long?! in Tourist class?!

I thought about going via SEA, but there are only 2 airlines flying to SEA from Europe, which makes it bloody expensive and I have to connect at least 2 times to get to JNU...

So, any help or advises are appreciated...

Thank you very much...

that´s what I wanted to say , If you maybe have a LH "Mitarbeiter" familiar you could fly with them for 25% . If you don´t have I don´t know If you can fly them
I think it goes when the captain says yes.

AS is the only choice for the first part of the trip.
I found an itenierary from SEA-ORD on AS connecting to to FRA on Air India for $451, not bad..

Indeed. Please share. The best fare I could find was $1,257.00 on Delta. Change planes in SEA and CVG.

How about this:

LH FRA-PDX, AS (via QX) PDX-SEA, AS SEA-JNU (assuming a direct SEA-JNU flight exists...I don't have an AS timetable handy..)?

You could fly:

Outbound:
FRA->DEN (Lufthansa)
DEN->ANC (Frontier or Alaska Airlines)
ANC->JNU (Alaska Airlines)

Return:
Reverse the above. LH flies a 744 to/from DEN.

i don't know the fares (i haven't got an access to amadeus or s.th. like that) but you can try the other way around what means to travel east-bound instead west-bound for example

FRA-NRT / LH or NH
NRT-SEA / UA or NW
SEA-JNU / AS

or

FRA-TPE / CI
TPE-ANC / CI
ANC-JNU / AS

my tip: be aware of AI on FRA-ORD. In this case DE is better 1000 times. The 747s are old, scrabby and almost every day delayed.

I flew this in early summer (ANC-FRA; June 4, returning June 22; $522 rt). Both coming and going I had three seats to myself in the middle and also I could get up and have two window seats. Condor also offers comfort class for twice the fare.

That must be "shit class" on a 747?

Okay, living in Anchorage, I am gonna recommend a change to your itinerary.

START in Anchorage, just for the sake of making things easier. Have your shinding in and around southern Alaska, and then travel to the other regions.

I am a Continental fan- I would choose FRA-IAH-ANC. That's a one stop itinerary, in comfortable, brand-new jets.
But there are other routes and carriers that would probably be just as convenient. You could Delta it up... FRA-ATL-ANC. They do an TL-ANC nonstop 763 in the summers. Not the newest planes, but convenient.

Oh, idea, American FRA-ORD and then Alaska's nonstop ORD-ANC...

If you limit yourself to STARTING in Juneau or Fairbanks, you're cutting yourself down on options, and that typically means higher prices as a consequence.

Just my suggestions.

Hey there,

that sounds reasonable... I just want to go to JNU as well... but sure, starting at ANC is a good option! Thats why I thought DE, flying in from FRA. Then driving around further south (Kenai Island) and then flying ANC-JNU-ANC and then back to FRA on DE... I just dont know the loads for the DE flights... I can non-rev on them... but its still several months to go, so I dont know...
I found some pretty good fares for AS on the ANC-JNU-ANC routing... less than $300 for those flights...

And btw: LH isnt using 744 anymore to DEN... its 346!  Sad Thats what LH intranet says (also for the summer months) but we'll see...  Wink

Thank you so much! Good suggetions I'm gonna check about...

Condor will operate again this route from May 08, 2007 only once a week (tuesday).

If I must to fly to JNU I will take:

DE-2066 FRA-ANC 11:20 13:15 763
AS-0070 ANC-JNU 19:53 21:31 734
AS-0073 JNU-ANC 07:22 09:02 734
DE-2067 ANC-FRA 15:10 10:35+1 763

DE flights rate = 604.59 Euros (Tax Included)
AS flights rate = 215.50 Euros (Tax Included)

DE2066 flight will make a technical stop at Whitehorse (Yukon Territory).

Hope it helps,

Gerard

NW FRA-DTW-ANC (Seasonal)-JNU, or NW FRA-DTW-SEA-JNU. All the same, get the A333 with Avod, 757 (possibly a 753).

I would concur with this recomendation. I would take the Condor flight, and have thought about doing it myself. Just to fly over the pole. It will be shorter, and its straight through. Then fly to JNU from ANC. If you want to go to FAI, I would recommend taking the train. It is touristy, as is JNU. I would also recommend, and I might be partial, but getting out to western Alaska. Southwest Alaska is quite pretty, much less touristy, and the cultural experience you would get with the locals will be much better. Plus the fishing is 100X better than the Kenai Peninsula. The kings arent as big, but you dont have to spend 3 days waiting to catch one. Youll be fish on at least once an hour. Good luck.

Come on, Fairbanks is nowhere near as touristy as Juneau or any of the cruise ship stops in the southeast. I also recommend the train, at least on one way. You can buy packages through Alaska Railroad (least touristy, least expensive), Princess Cruises, or Holland America/Grey Line that take the train from Anchorage to Denali, spend a couple days in Denali (I highly recommend), then finish the train journey to Fairbanks, spend a couple days in Fairbanks (you really only need 3 or 4 days here, if that), then fly back to Anchorage.

Also, I would go with Condor (who also happen to fly to FAI in summer). A former coworker went to Germany flying on them, and he said it was a very nice flight. Plus it cuts so many hours off your travel time.

Sounds good what you suggest there... But I am not a lot into fishing, I like the nature and the landscape, doing a bit of hiking or so...

Problem is: I dont have that much time! I arrive on the 8th and have to fly back on the 19th... So, it will be ANC, JNU, Kenai Peninsula and maybe FAI... But I dont want to be in a rush all the time... Its my 1st vacataion after 4 months then... So I want to relax as well... But I guess this wont ba a problem in Alaska  Wink

Thank you very much guys! Big of a help!  bigthumbsup

I wasnt saying FAI itself was touristy, and certainly not as bad as SE. I was talking about the train ride. It caters mostly to tourists. I lived in FAI for a few years and think its a great town. Especially in the summer. I was up there last year for AFN, but am contemplating a road trip up this summer for solstice.

Well fishing is the main attraction out this way, but dont think of it as fishing. It is more like "catching". The hiking is good, as is the birdwatching. We just dont have the access and facilities of the roadsystem. What you get out here is true remoteness, totally pristine areas etc. But it is more difficult to access. You need to know a local with a boat or a plane to make it worth your while, or a full service lodge stay which is spendy It doesnt sound with your timeframe that it would be the best way to use your time. And dont get me wrong, All of AK is great. I feel lucky to have been born and raised here. I just prefer my little neck of the woods.
