The Longest Time You've Spent In An Airplane Seat?

Thu Dec 07, 2006 5:52 am

I didn't get up a single time on my recent BA LHR-SFO flight which lasted about 11 hours. Of course I would have liked to stand up and walk around a bit, but I was sitting in the window seat of a 744 in economy class and the two people next to me were sleeping most of the time  irked . But the seat was comfortable and there were some half-decent movies showing on the IFE-system. Luckily I also didn't get the urge to pay the lavatories a visit.

Approximately 9 hours for me when I flew SIN-FRA on SQ in Raffles Class (a very comfortable seat). I was busy with eating, watching TV, playing games and listening to music. Then, approx. 4 hours prior arrival I had to get rid of all the bubbly and beer I consumed during the flight.  Wink

I've done the longest flight in the world.

EWR-SIN and back.. My kid and I did all kinds of stuff.

-Watched TV
-Made a movie
-Played on the MacBook
-Solitaire
-Food
-Music

Very long flight. Singapore and SE Asia made for a great trip, though.

This Monday just gone actually, I did not expect to do it, but I sat down at 11:15 Hong Kong time, and didn't get up again until 06:15 Paris time, which I make to be 14 hours without leaving my seat!

Not that it was the IFE which kept me there, that was utterly diabolical, but I had my music, the plane drifting over the route map to watch ... or the 1955 animated version of Lady and the Tramp should I really have been adventurous  Yeah sure

I certainly needed a good walk after that, but what I actually got was another hour flight to Birmingham and then 8 hours sat in a studio, yey!

11 hours FRA-SFO on UA in Economy, felt like an eternity even with the PTV's; luckily I had great service and some very nice FA's to talk to, so all in all it was one of the best transatlantic flights so far.

The longest nonstop segment I've done is JFK-JNB (7984 miles) - 14 hours 30 minutes. I slept at least 8 of those hours (woohoo prescription drugs !) but it was still very long.

I think it must have been 12 hours from AMS to MEX in 1998

If you're gutsy enough you can do what I routinely do: walk over your seatmate(s), literally. Of course I don't step on them, I walk on the armrests. 99.999% of the time, only their elbows are rested on the armrest, so this is no problem. There is no way on a 16 hour flight from EWR-HKG (which i did recently on CO), I'll be ok with being confined to my seat cuz the 2 people next to me are asleep and have their tray tables down. I do take my shoes off however as to not dirty up the armrests.

16hrs 10min from LAX-MEL on the infamous QF94...pretty sure it holds the record for the longest passenger nonstop flight for Qantas. absolute nightmare of a flight in a cramped 744ER.

Most of you guys beat me. I've spent hours and hours in an airplane seat on Eastern DC-10 flight from MIA-EZE-GIG and back.

The longest nonstop flights I have been on, has been SIN-LHR, SIN-CDG, SIN-CPH, SIN-AMS. Some of these flight has been about 14h 15 min.

But the longest flight on the same aircraft without getting out was a flight from Bali via Bangkok to Frankfurt in a Garuda MD-11 in October 1995.

After having boarded the plane, we sat for about 2h30min before taking off. The Captain then told us that the stop in Bangkok would be very short due to the delay. So after a 4h flight, we landed in Bangkok. BUT BUT. The stop lasted about 2h30m, and we were not allowed to leave the plane.

Then we took off to Frankfurt. The flight was 12h.

So all in all we were in the same plane without getting off in 21 HOURS !!

And that is not all. I was travelling with my wife and 2 children aged 3 years and 11 month. And on top off that we were not even seated on the same rows. We had one seat on row 42 and 3 seats on row 48.

What a flight.

Kind regards

SkyGourmet:
Funny you started this thread.
The seat I sat in the longest on an airline happens to be here in the database.

You see the fat bald guy on the left? Well the girl next to him with the ponytail and hat is the the seat I sat in.
It was an 11.5 hour flight from San Francisco to Tokyo last May.

The longest I've remained seated was on MG from PVR-MSP in 2001, where I didn't get up the entire flight, because a fat man put both bathrooms out of order before I had felt the need to use any of them. His exact announcement to everyone was "now both bathrooms are broken." I had to use the bathroom so bad when we landed, but this was before the new Humphrey Terminal was open, and I don't think customs at the old terminal had a bathroom before you made it through. MSP-PVR-MSP have been my longest flights so far, but I used the lav on the first one.

The longest for me was on LH FRA-DEN B744 last August. After about 9h30m we started our approach into DEN until we were advised that DEN was closed, so we diverted to COS. It took us a good forty five minutes arrives COS (had to go around some storms). We then sat on the ground at COS for 2h30min until we were allowed to depart to DEN. The flight back to DEN was only about fifteen minutes.

Total time in aircraft: 13h40min

For me, it would have probably been on BA085 back in December 2000. We were delayed about 3 hours. We started to board on time, but apparently, the airport was extremely busy, so there were pax still checking-in whilst some of us were already on board. Plus, the B742 was at a remote stand, so we were bussed to the aircraft. All in all, from boarding to deplaning, I was in my seat for a good 12 hours.

The longest direct flight I had was on a KLM DC10-30 (I believe about 25 years ago). I flew from AMS-CUR, but the flight routings was as follows:

13 hrs on a KE 747-400. Flying from ICN to FRA, it's usually a couple of hours shorter, but with an hour's delay on the ground after boarding, and an unusually strong headwind, it took us 13 hrs from embarkation to disembarkation.

Stuck next to not one, but two semi-drunk Italians, one of whom saw it fit to take of his socks and cross his legs, leaving his right foot resting on my seat pocket. Then he went to sleep, and uncounciosly started showing his elbow into my side. I was too tired to do anything about it, other than giving him murderous looks every now and then.

Other than that it was a pleasant flight, and I stole the last chicken meal from right under the bastard's nose when the second meal service came around. He had to eat the fish, some ghastly gratin thing, and he wasn't happy...

Cheers
Mats
Sure, we're concerned for our lives. Just not as concerned as saving 9 bucks on a roundtrip to Ft. Myers.
