Which Aircraft Do You Miss The Most

Sat Dec 09, 2006 11:01 pm

Out of all the aircraft that are retired or are soon to be retired, which ones do you miss the most? I know alot of us have a personal favorite of which holds fond memories. Mine would be the L-1011. My father worked for Delta for 35 years and we would always fly them on the MCO-BOS route. When I was younger I would actually have to sit on my knees to look out the window. I loved the large first class seats and the " awesome " entertainment system at that time.  Wink I also miss the sound of the RB-211 starting up or flying overhead. You could hear those a mile away.
My father passed 6 years ago and I hold the L-1011 in regards with his memory, as I have so many with him and that aircraft. I was lucky enough to sign and take ship 728 out to VCV on the very last flight for the Delta L-1011. That was a very bittersweet moment that will forever be etched in my memory.

Mine would be:

BAC 1-11

H.S. Trident

Boeing 707 & 720

B737-100 (although I never saw one)

Vickers Viscount

....and there are many more.

Douglas DC-3 (of course)

B737-200 (I have a last flight in one booked ANC-AKN-ADK in Jan.)

Convair 880 / 990 (not sure I ever flew in one - too young to have known)

ArcticBlast,
You are lucky to get one last ride in the 737-200. Take some pics to post here. Who are you flying on ? Is it AS ?

SK's MD-90s. Although this is an A/C still in service around the world, SK has been getting rid of them for the last few years. Nice and quiet, and the Mad Dog looked so much better with big engines.

Yep. AS 138 on Sun 28 Jan. ANC-AKN-ADK. On Adak Is. for an hour or so, then return same day, same combi, now AS 139, ADK-AKN-ANC. And, yes, I'll take pics. I've heard, offlist, that the last AS 732c will be withdrawn from service "sometime in April" 2007. Sigh.

SK's MD-90s.

To me. it brings a sad memory -the flyby at the CLOSING of Oslo's airport; Fornebu, it will not be missed.

On the missed list:

L-1011 -flew one FLL-NYC -still remember the spacious interior and ride

Caravelle -Remember I could hear them start up, then jump on my bike and make it to Fornebu in time to watch it take off

CV 990 Coronado -the sound

DC 9-21 -Hot Rod

BAC 1-11 for sure - nothing like the sound of Speys spooling up on pushback, large oval windows and the rear-facing exit-row seats at row 9 on the BA BHX-based 400 series a/c

Trident 3B - terrible t/o performance, but it was British and had - to borrow a phrase from SWA - 'party-seating' in the first row - and Autoland! Plus it was always amusing trying to watch the cabin crew collect the fares onboard, inflight on the Belfast shuttle...might be an urban myth, but there are stories of crews 'forgetting' to collect the fares on some shuttle sectors

TriStar - corral of lavs at the back arranged in a semi-circle and loads of cabin space prior to BA's ACE galley program when the underfloor galley was removed and all cabin service modules were installed on the main deck. Many memorable trips on these a/c on BA ATH-LHR, LHR-BFS (Easter hols service to augment the Tridents) and MAN-HKG with 3 intermediate stops!

747-100/200 - nothing beats the spiral staircase!

The DC-8 stretch, has this exterior light mounted high on the fuselage shining out, overlooking the wing. THAT was cool.

The deep throttle sounding of the RB.211 engines on the TriStar. MAN-O-MAN! What an airplane. She's a gem. She's the Queen. She's the (airplane) Almighty.

For all-around airplane lusciousness, it still has to be the TriStar, with the 707 a very close second. I even refuse to call Hollywood-Burbank, or Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena, or Bob Hope Airport, or whatever they want to call it, anything other than what it is: Lockheed Field.

So there!  Smile

For those of you who are L-1011 fans and have not seen this, I highly suggest checking this website out. It is dedicated to Delta's last L-1011 flight. A ton of pics inside and out, and a number of pics at VCV of the retired DL L-1011's. Kinda sad too to know it is the end of an era.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned classic 747s! There used to be a time when all international flights to Syd from anywhere in the world required a classic 747. There used to be heaps more European airlines doing Aus-Europe as well, My dad would take me down and spot as a boy and I'd see KLM, Olympic, Lufthansa 747 classics next to the Qantas ones, Alitalia was here but I can't remember which aircraft they used. I can't remember seeing AF, Needless to say SQ and CX had 747 classic presence in Sydney as well. Syd was an international terminal served more or less by 747 classics only in the 80s - now all that's left to remind us of those times are QFs 3 743s that I sometimes see at SYD.

At the end of all this, I just loved the 747-200, it was the pinnacle of air travel in the 80s - too bad I only ever got to fly on it maybe once or twice. Give me a well maintained -200 anyday of the week over a 400!

The only classic airliner that I've flown is the 727, which I was on for my very first two flights in 2001. Ironically, even though the 727 was still quite commonplace in 2001, my flights were on Champion Air, which of course still flies it. Kind of ironic from my perspective, since at the airport, I could see plenty of various 727s operated by the majors from my seat's window, and now those ones are all gone.

Other than that, I'm going to miss NW's DC-10s, as they were always nice to see flying around and especially to see practically on display for I-494 drivers outside of MSP since that's where the DC-10 hangar faces.

I miss any airliner that no longer exists.
Let me start with the DC 6, convair 340 and 440, the connies, work into Viscounts and Electras and end with Caravelles, one-11's, waterburner DC 8's and 707's/720's.
How can I forget the most BEAUTIFUL airliner ever...the Convair 880 in TWA markings..........

As you can tell, I like noise.

Yeah I saw that. [Mutters to himself] I will NOT, NOT, NOT get involved in the Sunderland/Sandringham debate AGAIN!!!

In fact by the time you saw it, it didn't really matter, they had been so basterdised to keep them flying into the 80s they were not really either. The Ansett engineers did what they had to do to keep them flying. The things were a mess of stc, engineering orders and concessions.

McDonnell Douglas MD-11.

I flew on them with Swissair and loved them. They were so comfortable and especially once the PTV's were added, they were great. I was on HB-IWF on her last complete flight (GVA-JFK) and when GVA-JFK got changed to a 332 I was happy to be on a type I'd never been on but I quickly got to missing the old MD-11's.

Ugly, basic but did the biz. Not so long back everywhere in the U.K. you would see one. A lot of airlines started with them. They always made me smile when parked along side the posh SAABs and -8s etc. It made them look even more Shed like?

I guess anything that makes a lot of smoke, loud and is different I miss.

The 727, 747-100 and the DC-10...

I'm sure if I'd flown on a 707 or DC-8 I'd miss them, but I've only ever seen them. I've seen KC-135s re-engined with CFMs, and a few DC-8-60s and -70s as cargo haulers... but it's not the same as being a passenger. The nostalgia is present though.

I saw a pic on here which almost brought a tear to my eye. It was of N230NW at MZJ. This plane was my first DC-10 ride and I have to say how great it was to fly on this plane, and now she's sat in the boneyard awaiting death. This is just sad!  Sad

My father passed 6 years ago and I hold the L-1011 in regards with his memory, as I have so many with him and that aircraft.

how touching.... the plane i miss the most is the L-1011.

McDonnell Douglas MD-11.

I flew on them with Swissair and loved them. They were so comfortable and especially once the PTV's were added, they were great. I was on HB-IWF on her last complete flight (GVA-JFK)

Wow that is very eerie, especially since it is believed that the newly installed PTV's caused the electrical fire, which ultimately downed the aircraft. You should count your blessings!
There's nothing quite like a trijet.

You think that's eerie? I was also on N93119 (TWA800) on her last complete flight (ATH-JFK) four hours before she went down.

Talk about good luck. For me, anyway, not for those who fly airframes right after I do.
