Best Sounding Engine Spool Up

Sat Dec 16, 2006 11:30 am

Not sure if this has been discussed before but didn't see anything when I did a search.

To you, what is the best sounding engine spool up?

For me personally, it's any 777 with a GE90 engine.
There is a great example of this on the following video on Flightlevel350. It's of Continental's Peter Max taxiing into position and spooling up for it's take-off roll. It's probably my favorite video on the site.

Just an awesome sound and better than any existing sports car in my opinion. Just never seem to get tired of hearing it.

So what about your favorite?

I miss the rumble of those engines. When I worked for FL and for EV @ ATL, the gates I worked were across the ramp from some of DL's gates from which L-1011 flights would operate out of. You could be in the pillbox and feel the rumbling of those engine.

There's just something about Rolls Royce engines starting up that I love. That guttural, almost primeval rumble that vibrates through you.

For me at Luton it was the old 737-300s for easyjet on a cold morning, used to love hearing it!

Ahhhh yes - very nice sound indeed. I love aircraft engines that have a very distinctive sound like this.

My very first flight ever was on a Delta L1011 Tri-Star so that aircraft has a very special place in my heart. Sure miss those Tri-Stars.

Nothing beats the sound of three JT8D-15s spooling up for the takeoff roll. Big grin

ah yes...thats class A noise.
I always like the DC 8 with J-55's. That whoooouusse sound is just enough to make the hairs on your arm stick up. It's air being forced into the engine to start the turbines. Then the engine starts its slow whine until it hits shrill. Now do it again three more times....it is unforgettable.

707 with JT3D. I'm kind of partial to this one seeing how I took the video... They're aren't many of these left.

Definitely the DeHavilland Ghost in a DH115 Venom! A close second is the RM2 (license built Ghost) in a SAAB J29 Tunnan (Flying Barrel). The high-pithced noise of a radial compressor is hard to beat for sheer "here-am-I"-attention getting.
