Chicago O'Hare Connection

Sat Dec 16, 2006 3:02 pm

My flight on UA arrives at 5:20am and my connecting flight on UA departs at 6:00am. They are both in Terminal 1.
Is 40 mins sufficient time?

Also, if the flight is running A LITTLE late, is it possible for the crew to call ahead and let them know that I am a connecting passenger? Or will United just say....."Tough luck?"

Thanks!

It all depends on where you arrive and depart out of Terminal 1. For example if you park at B-1 and your flight leaves out of C-31 youll be cutting it a little close as you have to go through the tunnel. Other than that at that time of the morning I think youll be o.k.

The flight crew wont call ahead, but if there are numerous passengers connecting with you, odds are they will hold it for a few minutes, but it being a STAR departure, I think if worst came to worst youd have to wait for the next flight to your destination.
I wish UA flew mainline to MYR, that way you wouldn't be stuck in a smelly Saturn for 12 hours.

O'hare has moving walkways. If you're late just run on the walkway ! (mind your step!)  Smile

Mainline to mainline connections at ORD aren't that difficult. You can get between any two gates in terminal 1 in less than 10 minutes. 40 minutes is adequate. Since you are arriving at 5:20am, I'm guessing that you are coming in on a Redeye flight from the west coast. At that hour of the morning, ORD is very uncongested and those flights don't get flow controlled or delayed. ORD is a great airport in the mornings. Things get messy in the evenings when there are too many flights and the weather is worse.

If your flight is late, the gate agent at the gate for your departing flight will know. There is no calling ahead necessary as they know about late connecting passengers, but nowadays, planes rarely get held, and unless it is a Global Service (super top elite at UA) passenger, then they won't hold a plane for a single passenger. If they know that they have late arriving passengers, then they will wait to shut the door and not do it 10 minutes prior to departure, but still the plane will depart on time.

A simple tip is to look at an ORD map on your inbound flight. There's a picture in the inflight magazine. I've found that the signs are not very good and clear in ORD, so it helps if you have an idea of the layout of concourse b and concourse c.

Thanks to everyone for your help!

Does it make a difference if I am flying to Montreal (international vs domestic) pertaining to the time frame that I have. Are international flights on the COMPLETE opposite side of Terminal 1 than domestic flights?

The onboard crew has no way to call don't even bother asking. The agent might be able to but that would just waste time that would be better spent hustling to your location. The outbound agent can see that you are comming on a late connection. They will make a decision based on multiple factors about whether it is practical to hold the flight for you. Don't stop for the restroom or food or a magazine if you are running late proceed directly to your gate.

If I recall correctly, when I went through ORD (I got in at 5:30am from SEA), the person next to me was going to YUL. We arrived in the C concourse, and YUL left from C1. I belive you will be in the C concourse the whole time, which can be walked from end to end at a leisurely pace in 5 minutes.

No flights to Canada operate the same as flights from the US. Preclearance means everything is handled in Canada, which makes connections easy in the United States. Just go to your gate.

Gate information is subject to change! I've had it change on me before. you can always ask the flight attendant to see if she would know any information.

The FA will announce over the PA it if they have the info. Asking is an excercise in futility.
