Is The 777 The Most Successful Airliner Ever Made?

Sat Dec 16, 2006 4:59 am

With the number of aircraft produced at just about 600 and with almost all major airlines using them, is the 777 not only the new 'back-bone' of the industry but perhaps the most successful airliner ever made, even over the 747?!

Just something I have been thinking about - what are your thoughts?

I would think you'd have to more tightly define your definition of "succesful."

In terms of shear numbers built, no. The 727, 737, 747,A320, DC9, all have/had more frames in use than the 777. The 737 is currently the leader in most produced frames, with over 6000.

I don't know the duration of which the other models reached the level of the 777, currently 600, over a 12 year period.

Without doing a lot of research, that's my short answer.

Well perhaps I should be more specific and re-phrase to: "isn't the 777 the most successful wide-body every made?"

Even the mighty 737 is eclipsed by the DC-3 if you include the military versions.

If you consider only widebodies, the 777 has not (yet) bested the 747 family.

Depends if you would class the A330/A340 series as the same type,' cos I know that they have had 1000 orders, not sure how many have been built

Well the 787 is closing on her fast (about 150 sales behind) and she hasn't even taken to the air yet.  Wink

Still, the 777 family has done very, very well for Boeing and she should still have many years of strong sales ahead of her, even with the 787 and A350X on the horizon.

While the 777 has been very successful, it's nowhere even close to the 747 as the most succesful wide body ever produced. I believe 600 is still well under half of what the 747 has done numberswise.

Plus the 747 has been in production for 3 and half decades and counting.

No contest here.

I suspect that both the A330 and A340 have a lot in common as far as structures, electronics, fittings etc. but surely they service different airline needs.

The 777 is in her league the best aircraft! Or let´s say she is in her category uncontested!

A superb A/C.

I think the 737 is the most succesfull ever made, more than 3000 of the classics models, and the new generation jets deliveries are growing too fast.

The 777 is probably the best wide body airliner since the start of the Millenium.

And damn, it's one good looking aircraft!!! Especially with those modern raked wingtips!!!

Maybe it is worth also pointing out that the 777 is an extremely safe aircraft with no serious instants in all those millions of hours flown.

I don't want to tempt fate either!

The 747-400 is probably the single most profitable aircraft to date. Given the sales volume, the high premium Boeing was able to leverage, and the reasonable program cost, the 747-400 has really been a Cash Cow with a capital C^2

I think there will be a third generation of 777s from Boeing. As of now it is completely kicking the a$* off of the comparable Airbus models (A330/A340) and I think that it will have well over 1,000 planes made when all is said and done.

For airliners, the DC-3 wins. Approximately 13,000 were built in either California, Russia or Japan under contract.

35,000 Cessna 172s have been built and that's still selling if you are looking at airplanes as a whole.

The 737 is the highest production passenger jet. It probably has earned the most money too.

The 747 is the undisputed champion of widebodies for 37 years now. As long as Boeing changes its plans it´ll be replaced together with the 777, some day around 2020. There is no way that the 777 will ever be called "the most successful". The 787, together with the A350, will kill the 777-200, the new 747-8I will put some pressure from above on the 773, the A350 from below.

The A330-300 is far from being "kicked".

Being a finance person I would say that the most successful aircraft would be that one which has the highest net present value from the day it started. That takes into consideration # of frames produced, price per frame, and duration the aircraft was/is sold. With that said, I don't know the answer.

I would have to give the 777 about 15-20 more years before I would consider comparing it to other airliners to determine the most successful.

For now, the 777 is kicking a lot of ass. Its capabilities are superior to many and it is made comfortable for the passenger and crew.

At this moment in time the 777 is not the most successful airliner (widebodied or otherwise ever made) - damn fine aircraft though it is. Maybe one day it will be - who knows.

however if we talk widebodies, while acknowledging the 747, I'm amazed nobody has mentioned the 767 and its own huge number of sales. Very flexible ops from short haul high density to long haul. Charter to full service.

Also bearin gin mind it was developed in parallel to the 757, it may well be that when you throw in development costs, it proved to be very cost effective in relation to the amount of sales it achieved.

One thing that the 777 has, that rates it as the best, is its delay and cancellation rate. Based on that alone, it is the most reliable airliner ever (yes, ever) placed in service. It started at a dispatch reliablity rate of 98.5%. That means that, initially, 98.5% of all 777 flights departed on time. If anything, the airplane has performed even better with time.
That will be a tough standard for anyone to meet or surpass.

Nah, if you count military versions, the DC-3 is. Over 10,000 were built  Wow!

The 737 to my knowledge, with over 6,000 built is second, and if I'm not wrong, the most successful jetliner.

The A330/340 are in principle the same aircraft, they do have minor differences in wing design and a few other small technecalities.

They were launched simutaniously and all though they do serve different markets to an extent, so do the different B777 variants. The A330/340 combination gave the airlines more flexibility in regards to effeiciency and ETOPS.

The 737 is not the #1 selling airplane. First of in just talks of airplanes there are many aircraft that have surpassed it, C152 C172 etc etc etc.... Now if you wanted to say airliner, you are wrong again the DC-3 has many more airframes produced. Overall I feel this board only looks at what is current, even though i know it is AIRLINERS.net alot of people ignore other parts of aviation such as GA and older aircraft, not saying everyone does but most people only see airliners and ignore other parts of aviation. No. It is still behined the 747 family. And the fact that the 747 family has been around longer than the 777 and is still going proves that as a whole, it is more succesful
