USA To FRA.... AA Or US Y-Class?

Sun Dec 17, 2006 1:31 pm

Early next year, I will be travelling from Las Vegas to FRA. Because of train connections in FRA, I've narrowed my choices down to either AA LAS/DFW/FRA on their 772's for the long-haul, OR USAir's LAS/PHL/FRA with an A330 on the long-haul.

I've never flown long-haul on either carrier before, so considering only seat comfort ,service and on-time reliability, I'd really appreciate any advice.

Cheers, Airbear

US's A330s have 33-34" of legroom in coach vs. 31-32" on AA's 777s, so US would be the way to go, I'd think.

I'd take AA from DFW. Great airport and I would avoid PHL at all costs after hearing the stories about it over the past year or two. Just ask for a bulkhead or aisle seat on AA and you will have plenty of room.

The 330's are just more comfortable and most important at no time would you be more than one seat away from an aisle. Done AA service to ZRH, and CDG, not international service by any standard.

I just went to PHX-PHL-AMS-PHL-PHX... although the A333s are much more comfortable than the 762 I was on... I had no problems whatsoever in PHL with connections or bags... in fact, my bags popped out before I did when I had to claim them for baggage recheck. The A333 is nice... PHL only is horrible when there is bad weather or ATC... which DOES happen quite often... although I'd still vote for US for the a/c.

Yeah - have to agree with AirCop on this one - I used to connect through DFW 1x or 2x week when I lived in LAX and commuted to SAT and various other cities in TX - and I began to really detest it. In fact I eventually defected to IAH on CO.

That said: the last time (September) I connected there it was a breeze - but many, many memories of 55 min connecting times and simply not making it to the next aircraft because of looooooooooooooooong taxi times on the inbound flights from those outlying runways.

Why not book the flight LAS-CLT-FRA, rather than going via PHL. It is still a 333, and there is less of a chance of ATC or baggage problems.

The CLT flight arrives 4 hours later. Remember the opening post:

Having travelled on the US A330, I can highly recommend it! Very comfortable and the IFE is great!

Avoid PHL and US like the plague.  yes

If you've never taken a 777 flight before, the DFW-FRA direct service is great.

Let us know what you decide.

I flew RIC-ORD-DEL-ORD-RIC on the RJ145 and AA 777 respectively, a very long flight (will never fly direct, i think) unless i move to chicago, connection to RIC was horrible.

The Y on the 777 was quite comfy, the F/As were very nice, a pleasant experience, since i had an aisle, didn't feel too tight inspite of me being tall. I would recommend it though i haven't flown on the US 330 to compare the 2.

I had no problems when I travelled through. US were fantastic... Have you flown on a US A330 or flown through PHL?

I would choose AA.

The seats are larger. US has 17" wide seats on the A333. AA's 777 seats are 18.2" per seat guru. I have flown longhaul on AA and have flown many times in 17" wide seats. Get the wider, more comfortable seat on AA.

Actually, I use both US and AA to FRA quite often each year.
The DFW-FRA is much better than the ORD-FRA flight because of the
equipment used, but the FRA-DFW flight leaves somewhat early in the
morning for a trans-Atlantic departure (in the 10 O'clock hour).

For seat comfort, there's really not much difference between the US 333
and the AA 772. However, in terms of in-flight entertainment, US is better
than AA; but that's not to say that AA's is bad, just not as good.

Don't forget there is a CLT-FRA flight, which I prefer to take over the PHL
one, especially on the return. CLT customs in the afternoon is a piece
of cake.

Four times on US, three from PHL to FRA and MAN, and once from RDU to FRA. All non-revs, of course. They lost my bags twice, once going to FRA outta PHL, and once coming back from MAN to PHL. I also had 3 DVD's taken from a checked bag on the MAN-PHL segment.

Avoid them like the plague.  yes

because of your couple of bad expierences he should not avoid them. I have flown US from PHL-LGW, it was a very enjoyable experience. Lost bags happens with any airline, so don't blame every lost baggage problem on US, furthermore, stolen items could be the airport personal, so maybe he should avoid MAN like the plague.

sorry if it was harsh, but i've been reading way to many threads bashing of US and PHL. Its really not that bad.

Hi folks... sorry for my delayed response (been ill).Anyway, thank you all for your answers. At this point, I've got US booked, mainly due to to the extra legroom plus the fact that I've found 330's/340's to be much quieter in the cabin than Boeings. IFE: From Y-class cabin shots seen here on A-net, the seatback screens seem far larger than the tiny screens I remember from an AA 777 flt. I took 2 yrs ago LAX/DFW (at that time I was also still keen on maintaining my QF FF Gold status - but now, what with everything to do with QF and the buyout - and that's a whole other thread - or dedicated web site even  Smile by itself - I don't care that much any more).

Anyway, I wish everyone a safe and happy Festive Season.

Cheers, Airbear
