Best Way To Get From HKG To PEK?

Mon Dec 18, 2006 11:33 pm

I'm travelling from the UK to Beijing during 2007. I have researched flights, and it is far cheaper (in some cases at least GBP200 cheaper) to fly to HKG than it is to fly to PEK.

However.. what is the best/cheapest airline that flies between HKG and PEK that you would recommend?

(I had posted this topic in the polls and prefs forum but it seems nobody actually reads it, so I decided to post it here instead!)
Next flights: LGW-LBA-LGW, LHR-SIN-SYD, SYD-BKK-LHR, LGW-GRO, GRO-CIA, CIA-MAD, MAD-LGW

CX, KA, CA and CZ serve non-stop HKG/PEK. I think my preference goes in that order too. The prices should all be similar (around US$400) according to expedia. I am not sure you are saving a whole lot by going to PEK via HKG, considering the HKG-PEK leg and possible overnight hotel/transfer and most of all added travel time.

You should consider taking the train, if you have enough time. China and India are some of the last places in the world where long distance train service makes sense. There is the Kowloon-Canton railroad to Guangzhou, which is a couple of hours. From Guangzhou there are express trains to Beijing where you should be able to get a first class sleeper car for half the cost of the air ticket. It takes nearly 24 hours however.

It is a little difficult to navigate for non-Chinese unfortunately. However, you can see the countryside at ground level, while sipping your tea. There is also a dining car and you can get out at stops and buy food and trinkets from station vendors.

I don't think you want to do the train thing...Depending on where you are flying in from you will most likely arrive at night, meaning you will need to stay in HK for one night, that could cost you..

I go to China about 6-times per year. I use to go to HK but now fly directly into PEK..IMO flying into HK is a pain in the ass....Pay the extra money and fly into PEK or PVG

Cross the border into Shenzhen, best way is to take a ferry to the Shenzhen Airport and the fly SZX-PEK.

Exactly. My company flew me PEK-SZX-PEK to get to Hong Kong because it was half the price. But then again it was in 1999 so things might have changed...

Nope, not too much. Prices to/from HKG to China will always be more expensive, as it's treated as International. So going to CAN or SZX isn't a bad choice although you could have more of a language barrier problem.. But you get that everywhere so yeah..

CX have really weird times to PEK which wouldn't suit. CZ - If you are a OneWorld person will suit just fine as it has the same perks as CX although it's not run by CX. It's only 3 hours so it shouldn't be too bad, regardless what airline you choose. CA send planes from the 738 to the 772.

Better stop before I go too wayward..
It's all about the destination AND the journey.
