The "Plane"

Fri Dec 29, 2006 4:19 pm

Well, IMO, the ultimate "plane of planes" would be the DC-3/C-47. Over 70 years after its maiden flights it's still around, carrying passengers and cargo through out the world, on a daily base. An aviation masterpiece that came out a way ahead of its time !

The second place would go to the B-707. This plane has changed the face of the commercial aviation.

The third place, IMO, would go to the B-737, the world's best selling commercial airplane.

Your list/thoughts would be appriciated !

First choice = DC8 old short series. First jet plane I flew on AMS-YVR in 1962. I have loved them ever since.
Second choice = Super Caravelle. Quiet, comfortable and reliable. Flew those for about 5 years, with Finnair, from 1970 - 1975.
Cheers,

I'd pick the 747. Ask someone if they heard of a 747, and they'll say yes. Ask them about a DC-7, and they'll start giggling. It's distinctive, common, and well-known.

The airplane that brought air travel to the common man and therefore deserves the title as the plane:

Yepp...for me, that's "The Plane"... BTW, the Dakota was retired from the IAF only a few years ago. The pilots that have flown the plane said that the only replacement for a DC-3 is another DC-3...

I'm baised to this statement because it is my favorite aircraft. But in all probability, if you went up to Joe Schmoe who had never set foot on an airport in his life, would know what a 747 was if you asked him. Whether he could identify one if he saw one would be a different matter!  laughing

First: DC3 and than Second 707
but 3rd would have to be the first Jumbo jet the 747. And after the 777.

I will have to agree with most of you it IS the DC-3 not only is it still flying, but it is flying up north in Canada (along with other places) and has been for many years. The plane is the definition of a workhorse, my only dream would be to land a job flying a piston powered DC-3 up north before they go. The turbine versions are making their mark for sure.
Keep the shinny side up!
