TWA Fleet If Still TWA Still Around?

Sun Dec 31, 2006 4:05 am

How would have been TWA fleet if TWA was still around?
What's your opinion?

I think TWA might have gone with the 767-400ER ala CO and DL to replace at least some of their L-1011s, with 777-200ERs for the longer missions and possibly 777-300ERs to replace the 747-200 fleet. I'm not familiar with TWA's route structure at the end, but if they didn't fly trans-Pacific, I imagine the 747-400 would not have been necessary.

The 717 would continue to replace the DC-9s on the low end, I imagine, and TWA may very well have followed DL, NW, and AA in flying the Mad Dogs until they rusted out of the sky and then replacing them with 737NGs.  Smile

I know that it was talked about once before, that TWA had a plan where it would have ordered the Airbus A320 to replace their fleet of aging Boeing 727s. This change would have occurred shortly after the millennium (2003?), but history would prove otherwise.

The last L-1011s and 747s were retired in 1997, four years before TWA went under. I don't think they would have planned on buying more widebodies. In their final years they bought some 763s and probably would have began the phase out of the older 762s. The Mad Dogs would have been around for quite some time as the MD-83s were the last ever built.

Today the fleet would probably be a mix of

717s
A319s
MD-82/83s
752s
762/763s

Close enough --

40 717s, 20 M83s, 15 738s, 20 752s, 10 753s, 10 763s

We will never know!  wink

I don't think it would be much different than it was at the time the Dark Side took over.

717's, MD-80's, 752's and 763's. Maybe - just maybe - start looking at 737NG to replace old MD-80's but that's about it.

I also heard that they wanted to buy some 318s

I don't think that's necessarily true, as CO flies trans-pacific and has no 747's. The 777 fits the niche for most routes perfectly, especially with the huge number of airlines flying the routes.

I wonder if Boeing would have kept the 717 line open if TWA was still alive. It's an interesting question to ask.

I recall that TWA had route authority from St. Louis to Japan but had not begun operations. The only long range craft they had were the 767s By the end I believe all of the the 747s and L-1011s were out of service. I would have loved to see those 717s flying to St. Louis from Tucson.

You never know, TWA did keep the MD-80 line open a little longer with the 1997 order. The 717 line would surely still be alive if AA decided to operate the 717s acquired from TWA and then place a large order to replace the F100s with them.

You're right. I wasn't sure if it was A318 or 319s.

TWA's had orders in for their long-term short-haul fleet replacement program right before they were taken over by the AAirline that killed them:

A318/A319/A320.

There short-haul fleet would have looked like:

A318/A319/A320 and 757-200s.

Their long-haul is anyone's guess, but I would venture to say 767-300s and some 777-200ERs for longer flights/flights that require more payload.

Ultimately:

A318
A319
A320
757-200
767-300ER
777-200ER
Some see lines, others see between the lines.

TWA was going to buy some used 747 200 before flight 800 to replace there 747 100. I think those 747 200 would still be in there fleet.

PS: they could have been ex NZ 747 200

Yeah, TW were going Airbus for short-haul before they flunked, along with the 717s. I actually thing they would have followed NW and gone mainly Airbus
