777 Y Seating Configuration Preference

Sun Dec 31, 2006 4:16 pm

The 777 offers two principle seating arrangements for 9-abreast in Y. The most common being the 3-3-3 arrangement, touted by Boeing as allowing the aircraft to be 2/3 full before forcing anyone to sit next to anyone else (or in a middle seat). AA and UA, however, arranged their 777s much as the old DC-10s/L-1011s were, which is 2-5-2.

Which do you prefer.

While I take Boeing's point about 3-3-3, in 3-3-3, 2/9 of all the seats are more than one seat away from an aisle, whereas in 2-5-2, only 1/9 of all the seats are.

Personally, I prefer the 2-5-2 arrangement. what do you think?

anyone else prefer an alternative, perhaps like the 3-4-2 KLM uses on their MD-11s (which will soon be altered to 3-3-3 to match the 777s)?

Which aircraft is more efficient for airlines. Is the Boeing 777 better than the Airbus A340 or is the A340 better than the Boeing 777. What are your thoughts and comments

Total bollocks! Virtually all the long-haul flights I've been on for the past 5 years have been totally or almost totally full.

2-5-2. I like having a window with only one person next to me.

I never understood why more airlines do not adopt 3-4-2.

I prefer the 3-4-2 configuration. It's more flexible. It fits travelers who travel in pairs, or parents travelling with children. One airline that has 777s using this configuration is Egypt Air.

I usually travel with just my wife; I like 2-5-2 (as long as we get the 2)

Emirates - Considered my many as one of worlds best airlines, fits 10 abreast in their aircraft.

3-4-3

I wonder is any one prefers that config? Esspecially on a nice long flight like DXB-JFK or DXB-AKL!

It's actually news to me that the 777 is flown with a 2-5-2 configuration by some airlines, I really don't like the 3-3-3 on others, as it means the window seat I prefer requires annoying 2 people to get out of my own seat.

Varig had the 2-4-3 seating when I flew them a couple of years ago, so perhaps they had it on the 777 as well. Certainly I would be put off from flying with EK in their 3-4-3 on the 777, I flew a ThomsonFly 767-200 within Europe this summer and it's 2-4-2 layout was bad enough, I could not imagine it on such a long flight, even with the great IFE they have.

For me it is 2-5-2 I have always liked a window seat and to have to crawl over 2 people on the way out is a pain. In 3-3-3 2 people per row have to crawl over 2 people while in 2-5-2 only 1 person does, and they get a chose on what way to go if there is only one person sitting on one side of them.

I wonder why more airlines didn't go for this... as said, it really is the most flexible...

I have flown 3-3-3, 2-5-2 and the horrible 3-4-3. While nobody expect me to prefer the latter (Besides the weirdo China Southern and Emirates hooligans out there), i really prefer the 2-5-2.

The 3-3-3 can seat 6/9 before you seat next to another person, that's right. But the 2-5-2 can actually accommodate 8/9 with no one having two side-mates, and still nobody has to climb over two people to get out.

The only bad about the 2-5-2 is to get the middle seat in a fully loaded blimp, but you are seriously unlucky if you ask for another option and don't get it.

The 3-4-2 is a nice config, as it suits businessman and families, but still, on the 2-5-2 I have four aisles seats and two windows seats with only one person to trash when visiting the back of the plane, with 3-4-2 I also have the four aisle seats, but only one of the happy happy windows seats...

So I'd go for the 2-5-2 any day.

The China Southern 3-4-3 btw, is also ridiculous in the height. The seats are not very tall, it seems like they tried to cramp in another level of 3-4-3 on top. You'll probably be better of in the toilet on a long haul aboard this bird (The CZ food can help you get there).
