50 Min Layover Enough Time LHR-BOS-JFK On BA/B6?

Tue Jan 02, 2007 12:52 pm

Hey! I am about to book my flight in a few days and I am will be flying back from London to Boston on BA, we get into Boston at 1:00PM and my flight from Boston-NYC (-Burlington, VT) leaves at 1:50PM. Is that enough time to connect? Do I need to re-check my bags with B6? The next flight out would be 7:30PM and thats a lot of time to hang around after an international flight.
Thanks!

Wow 50 minutes is awfully close I believe specially if you are arriving when the bulk of the European arrivals are coming in. I leave at least 1:30 to 2 hours when connecting with the same airline. I wouldnt do it, in my opinion

I would agree with the above post. You will arrive when a lot of other intl flights are coming in, i.e. immigration will be a mad house. I would have allowed no less than an hour and a half to two hours. That is just me however.

Much too short. Why not avoid BOS and fly right into JFK for your B6 conneciton up to Burlington?

I totally agree with the three posters above. Terminal E is totally unpredictable, especially around the time you'll be arriving when all the heavies from Europe land in quick succession. In the past, it has taken me between under ten mins and over an hour to clear immigration. Then you'll have to clear customs, walk (run?) for ten mins or so from Terminal E to Terminal C and recheck for your onward flight. I really wouldn't recommend it, especially given that both flights would not be on the same booking, so you will be on your own if you miss the connection.

Are you going to NYC and then onwards to Burlington? This is kind of the long way around, isn't it? Isn't there any ground transportation that can take you to Burlington from BOS to avoid spending the rest of the day trying to get there?

You'll be lucky to get through immigration in thirty minutes, which leaves you twenty to get to the other terminal, check in, go through security, and get on the plane. Not going to happen. At least ninety minutes for international to domestic connections.

HI everyone,
Here is the full story to help guide you.

My girlfriend and I are off to England for two weeks in March. My gf's mother said if its cheaper, she'd drive us to Bos. As it turns out, it is much cheaper to fly out of BOS than my other home town airport, YUL. The other day she said "I'll bring you to boston because I'd like to see you off, but I might put you on a flight to get back home, is that ok?" We both said yes, so I've been looking around these past few days. Yeah, if I'd known that before hand, I would've went LHR-JFK-BOS. As for BOS-YUL its $300 total, BOS-BTV w/ CO its $280.00 and BOS-JFK-BTV with B6 its only $197.

Is that per person? If it is, maybe getting a limo from BOS to Burlington might be cheaper!!! And quicker!!!

Slightly off topic but,

I am flying BHX-CDG-KIX I have a 1hr 45 connection time. Does anybody know how long it will take me to get from my flight from BHX to my flight to KIX???? (Both flights are with AF so I don't think I will have to re-check them.)

Thanks,

BAguy

Nope, that is the total. I just got off the phone with my gf, she said if its easiest we'll pay a little more for the direct BOS-BTV flight with CO, I always wanted to go on a B1900. It will be a change, getting off a B777 and going on a B1900!

Shouldn't be a problem for you.

Factoring that in, is it still cheaper to fly out of BOS than out of YUL?

You wont have to go through customs or Immigration so there shouldnt be a problem. Just get off one plane and get on the other one, you'll remain as a in-transit passenger.

KLM,

Whatever you end up doin I would allow at least 1/1:30 hours when connecting from Intl-Domestic on the same airline...and about 2-3 hours when it is a different airline.
Remeber most airline require you to check in at least 45 minutes before the flight with baggage.

You'll have to claim your luggage in BOS anyway to go through customs.

They might not interline because they are not in alliance. Either way you are gonna pick up your bags when you land in BOS and go through customs. Then its a matter of whether the bags are checked all the way and if BA can give you a boardin pass for your CO flight (which I doubt they will) so youll prolly find yourself in the CO counter either way.

Have fun

Not 100% sure, but I don't believe there is a baggage re-check for BA in BOS (only AA has one, and it's upstairs at a regular ticket counter I believe). You'll have to grab your bags off the belt, go through customs, and I'd suggest just walking over to Terminal C and re-checking in with CO over there.

CO also leave from Terminal C. It's maybe a 10-min or so walk from Terminal E and, if I remember well, there are signs. Just to get you started, here's what you do: when you clear the customs area and you get out of the doors, you'll have to turn left and walk towards that end of the building (as you're walking, you'll have the Terminal doors on your right). Go through a door and cross the street (that's where a cab pick up point is I think). Walk along the pavement (I think you'll pass the offices of the state police at some point?) and get through one of the doors that indicates Terminal C. Follow the signs and take the escalator up to the check-in area (the lower area is where the luggage reclaim belts are). You'll probably come up around the UA check-in desks; go passed them and you'll see the CO desks, just passed the AC ones.

Have a safe trip!!!

thanks Tony! I am printing it out so I have directions when I need it.
It sounds like you know BOS pretty well, what is Terminal E and C like? I think we'll have a 3 hour layover, any good spotting areas? Any good shops/resturants? I guess this will go either way, leaving Bos (to LHR) and arriving from. I do have another post like this running, so feel free to check it out as well.

(I read the post again and this was not very clear) I meant: when you get out of the doors after customs, not out of the terminal!

Quoting KLM672 (Reply 18):
It sounds like you know BOS pretty well,

I have flown out of E and C many many times... When I fly out of E to Europe, I usually go and check-in first and then go to Legal's in terminal C for a bite to eat so that I can avoid the terrible on-board food and maximize my sleeping time in the flight. So, I can go from E to C and back almost with my eyes closed!  Smile

Quoting KLM672 (Reply 18):
what is Terminal E and C like?

Well, E is the nicer of the two. All the areas outside security / customs are very new and, in my opinion, very tastefully done. The gate area is still the old one, but it is being renovated, so it's OK but not great. Luggage reclaim is quite dark and not all that inviting. But, usually, immigration takes so long that your suitcases will already be on the belt by the time you reach it and you won't spend too much time there.  Smile

C is older but OK. At least the check-in area is quite open and, in my opinion, inviting (even though it's usually very busy...). I don't know what the gate area for CO is, as I have never flown out of that part of the terminal. If it's the same as the UA area, it's really not very roomy and a bit claustrophobic due to the low ceiling.

Quoting KLM672 (Reply 18):
Any good shops/resturants?

Yeah, there's a Legal Seafoods, as I said earlier, outside security in terminal C. So, if you have some time after you check-in, go there and grab a chowder to remind yourself you're back in New England!  bigthumbsup

If you need anything else regarding BOS, please get in touch through IM. I can't help much with LHR info though (I know terminals 1 and 3 well, but not 4 where BA flies out of...).

Cheers,

Tony

The minimum International to Domestic connect time indicated in Sabre is 90 minutes. Generally speaking, the published minimum connect times are based on what happens in a relatively perfect world, which is an increasingly rare occurence in the real world of air travel today.

Quoting KLM672 (Thread starter):
Do I need to re-check my bags with B6?

In all probability, in addition to the usual claim-and-recheck your luggage process of international arrivals, the answer is yes. You may wish to contact either or both BA and B6 in this regard. However, the airline for whom I work (which subscribes to the "we're all one big happy airline" mentality) does not have an interline baggage transfer agreement with B6, so it is very unlikely that BA has such an arrangement with B6.

All of which means a succesful 50 minute connection from BA to B6 at BOS is a longshot at best -- and the odds are only as "good" as this assuming that B6 has a baggage re-check counter located in the area immediately after pax exit from Customs and/or your BA flight arrives well ahead of schedule due to lack of the prevailing headwinds taken into account in the scheduled arrival times of westbound trans-Atlantic flights.
