What Aviation Careers Are There?

Mon Jan 08, 2007 1:35 am

What aviation careers and jobs can a young person aspire to?

As part of a larger project to encourage kids to consider aviation as a career I'd like to assemble and publish a list of careers and jobs in aviation. There are the obvious jobs (pilot, aircraft mechanic) but there are many more important aviation related jobs that are not as visible or well known.

Pilot, Co-Pilot, Flight-Engineer.
Aircraft Mechanic
Airport Manager
FAA Air Traffic Controller
Airline ground crew
Airport support personnel.
Aviation magazine writer or editor.
Aerial photography
Aircraft insurance.
Aircraft designer and aeronautical engineer designing new airplanes.
Aircraft assembly at a airplane factory

Thanks,

Todd

One idea I can give you is:

In an old Airliner World issue there was an article on the BA team that sorted out the new Calgary service. It was a recent issue, and I found it really interesting. Personally I think the list you have there is very comprehensive, but you forgot F/A. Speaking as a "kid" of sorts, I aspire to be a pilot Big grin.

So which is it? An old issue or recent issue?  Wink I have the same copy, bought it last month, so it was a recent issue.

I would love to have a copy of the list because I would like to get into the aviation industry and I am not sure in what area.
Thanks,
Andre

Id Say add Flight Attendant and Airport Designer. (I have a friend who works for an airport design firm).

Also, Airways-Facilities Technicians. (These are the guys who fix everything from the printers at the FAA facilities all the way up to radar installations etc.)

Thanks for the suggestions. These are all good. How could I forget about Flight Instructor, Test Pilot, and all those jobs a small airports. Oh yeah.. Banner towing, professional stunt pilot, or a employee at EAA, AOPA, etc.
I just thought of Air Marshall & TSA.

One point I will want to make is that not all avaition related jobs involve actually flying. Many jobs in avation are safe on the ground... except for the Airliners.net webmaster job...  Wink

I really don't think any kid is going to aspire to be an office worker for an airline, they all want to be pilots.

Meteorologist, most of those serve the airline industry, air forces, and so on. Many work at airports, so they only talk with pilots and air traffic controllers.
How can anyone not fly, when we live at a time when we can fly?
