Why Does Everyone Hate AA?

Sun Jan 07, 2007 11:25 pm

I was just wondering why everyone bashes AA on this site. I flew them from BDL-MIA-NAS-MIA-BDL in the beginning of December (Im doing my trip report now) and everything was perfect. It was my first time on AA so I didnt exactly know what to expect but the crew was fantastic, they still offer pillows and blankets. They offer food for sale, which is the norm. The 757 that everyone complains about was in immaculate condition and everything was clean. The flights were all on time. The crew even wished someone a happy birthday on the intercom. The crew was very casual too. They weren't totally serious like at other legacy carriers. Any horror stories people would like to share?

I think AA is kind of a love it or hate it thing. I used to like AA quite a bit, even their business class (at a time when the only other business class I had flown was AV and IE). However, after experiencing BA's, SQ's, and other premium carrier's business class I must say I stopped liking AA that much.

Of course, the argument will be that the US airline industry was in really bad shape and that AA was lucky not to go into Ch 11.

Last time I flew AA's business class was at the end of October, on the MIA-LHR sector. The flight experience was actually not bad, but one quirk that I found was that drinks were not complimentary at the Admiral's Club in MIA. The Arrivals Lounge in LHR did have complimentary drinks and food, and shower rooms. However in turn, the lounge itself was not as nice as MIA's.

I guess AA is just your "we'll get you there for a relatively low price with relatively low frills" kinda carrier.

Cheers,

On this board, you'll find that everyone has their favorites. You'll find an equal number of folks that bash AA will bash UA, US, or any other carrier. I've never had any problem with BA either but there's always someone on here who will tell you what a horrible operation they run.

I've never had a serious problem with AA.

I've had a lot to complaint about AA but also a lot to like them. My experience is based on a day-by-day experience.

AA are fine, and their lounge in MIA is brand new, enormous and absolutely spectacular. I say this having used the CX lounge in HKG, QF lounges, BA lounges... that MIA one is right up there.

I flew AA on many sectors in February - all in domestic J and F and I found them to be absolutely fine. The service was fine, my only gripe was that they ran out of champagne before we took off on one of the sectors. That said, I had one sector in Y and they upgraded me at the gate when I asked, which no other airline has ever done for me.

One thing that rammed home how good AA were is that they serve a meal on flights over 1 hour 45 minutes in First. I flew AS YVR-LAX, which is well over two hours and didn't get a meal. A credit to the AS staff though, they got us all drunk!  Smile

I guess if I had a bad experience I might think otherwise, but I've never had a bad experience flying ever. Even when our BA flight was delayed 6 hours, I don't count that as bad, as we got an overnight hotel stay in London before flying out the next day. Maybe I'm just too easy going  Smile
I do enjoy a spot of flying, especially when it's not in economy!

On all my domestic flights in First Class this December, there were no pillows, only blankets. Getting on UA, it was a pleasure to have pillows in both F and Y because you forget how nice they are so you don't have to lean on the side of the wall for 5 hours straight. I guess you just got lucky to have them onboard your plane.

Only alcoholic drinks are not complimentary, all other drinks in the Admiral Clubs are complimentary.

I have flown on AA exclusively since AA absorbed TWA. I have no complaints with the service other than eliminating meals from the coach section or the condition of the airplanes. AA honored all my TWA miles and because of this I made the million mile club a few years ago and have lifetime gold status and my wife is also a gold member.

As both an A&P mechanic and a former commercial pilot on corporate jets, I can see or hear things that the average passenger would not and I can say that AA does a fine job.
They keep all their airplanes with the exception of the ex TWA 757’s which the interiors are getting worn out in excellent shape. Occasionally I have had a seat that would not stay in the upright position and when I report it to the FA’s they write it up immediately.
Ever since I started flying AA I have had only 4 flights cancelled because of aircraft problems, only 2 of these both MD-80’s were mechanical, the other a 767 and a 757 were because of bird strikes on landing.

As far as those people bashing the AA MD-80’s, my wife and I so happen to like them because of their reliability and comfort, we especially like to 2 seating on the left side which gives us some privacy and because we are elites we can reserve the exit rows seats when we book the flight and with the extra leg room its almost as comfortable as a first class seat. Lately a lot of our trips has been on MD-80’s on about 2 hour flights and unless we are given a complimentary upgrade to first class we save our miles and upgrade coupons for the longer flights where first class in more comfortable.

Also I have had only 2 bad experiences with rude employees, an FA with an attitude problem on a LAX to HNL flight and a gate agent at DFW with a short fuse. AA recently started a program called Applause in recognition of outstanding customer service, I have been issued coupons which I can give an employee if I feel they went the extra mile and I carry them with me at all times.

I can say that staying out of bankruptcy was a major accomplishment and although AA is not yet out of the woods, I think the future looks great.

Not all 757s are that way. How many did you fly on? Did you sit in the rock hard bench style F seats?

They also don't still offer pillows and blankets on all flights, nor do they offer BOB on all flights.

And while you call BOB the "norm" that is not really true. It's only become the norm very recently, and AA was a leader in sending the USA down that road. They used to be a full service carrier, and some of us who've flown them for years are disappointed with their new cheapness when other carriers haven't had to go to such measures, have newer planes, etc.

In other words, those of us with many hundreds of thousands of miles on AA, we do know "what to expect" and getting on AA now, we expect more than they provide...

Firstly, I fly AA alot, I'm platinum with them, and just like anything else, they have their off days, but I have found more than enough friendly staff and good experiences that I keep going back.

Secondly, when people say that they fly Business class, or first for that matter, on AA (or another US carrier) and compare that to, say, SQ, BA, or CX, is it really a fair comparison based on the price paid (I don't fly F or J much, so I cannot comment), or do people actually pay the same for J or F on AA, etc., as they do with the foreign carriers and get crappier service? Because if AA is cheaper, then, well, there you have it.....

The price is usually the same. Have you never checked?

Only if the work for FR Big grin. Yeah you;'re right, everyone has their different opinions for different reasons. Personally I like AA, but my credibilty is slackened somewhat as I ahve never flown them. A few people on thios site simply dislike AA because their Uncle works for DL oir whatever, but most of the people on here have a valid reason for disliking AA, mainly due to a poor flight or bad service

I don't fly on AA, but that has more to do with that I live in Detroit and NW has way more flight options out of here. I like NW, but there are a lot of people on a.net that bash NW.

I can see why some people don't like them. They didn't do a great service to most TWA employees. I don't like some of the things they did either, but If they had a good price on a ticket and a convenient time I would fly on them.

They are one of the biggest too. A lot of people like to bash on the biggest regardless of what kind of company it is. Think GM, Wal-Mart, etc.

IMO the MD-80's are the best thing about flying AA domestically. I enjoy them for the same reasons you mentioned, plus it's nice to get on something different besides the typical 737 or A320. I remember reading shortly after the Boeing/Douglas merger in '98 that AA would look into replacing the Mad Dogs. Well 10 years has almost passed and they have more in service now than they did then!

I love AA... I always have though...

I also don't fault AA with the problems surrounding TWA and the merger aftermath. TWA was in bad bad shape prior to the buyout. In many respects, even with its turnaround plans, it was a sinking ship and already a shell of the former company it was. I also believe that AA did not have bad intentions in the merger. At the time, the industry was still booming, it was only slightly cooling its late 90s super boom... AA was looking for a way to remain competitive should the UA/US deal be approved and TWA was the answer.

It also was a strategic move in the fact that STL was a perfect mid-continent hub to serve along side ORD and DFW for connecting traffic. The problems that most complain about only really arose after the massive downturn post 9/11. As the market cooled extremely rapidly and excess capacity abounded, AA like the rest of the carriers, had to shrink... it just happened to be that TWA had just been recently assimilated.

To that end it was the TWA'ers that bore the brunt of the furloughs and that STL was the one to suffer... But, while tragic and I truly feel for most of the TWA'ers, it was logical from the AA side... DFW and ORD were already in place in the AA system... why shrink your fortresses when you have a new place that needs changing anyways.. just delay the new changes... makes perfect sense to me...

As far as TWA employees leaving... again, I feel for them, but it makes sense, they were bought out.. it was only fair that they be on the lower ends of the seniority lists of a merged carrier. It just happened that when furloughs were needed, it was their numbers.

I truly feel that had the industry not had the massive downturn like it did, to the extent that it did, AA would not have "killed" STL like they did, and you would see many many more TWA'ers still at AA. American really gets a bad wrap for something I don't truly feel they had control over, it was just smart business.

As many people hate AA on here.. there are just as many that love them.. and many many people in the traveling public must love/like them too.. they still have a very loyal FF following, strong corporate accounts, remain the largest airline, and the ONLY one of the big 6 to have NEVER declared bankruptcy.. thats just impressive... granted, a lot of people find it hard to cheer on the dominant.. always gotta go for the underdog... i think that is a small reason why there is the disdain often shown on here towards AA.. just not wanting the big to win.

Well I guess I'll go ahead and jump on the bandwagon.

I love AA.

Everyone that hasn't been living under a rock for the past year or so knows I fly them monthly and my uncle has been flight crew with AA for 28 years (he's got another 10 to go with them).

Have traveled on many carriers, I always come back to AA. I am loyal.  airplane

Cheers.

I have flown AA often over the years- 3xs to Monterrey, Mexico, and to Bogotá, Colombia and numerous domestic trips. Except for one time*, I have always had a postive experience. I have cashed in frequent flyer trips to San Juan, Puerto Rico, Cancún and Santo Domingo in The Dominican Republic.
Here in Tucson, they fly all mainline to Dallas and Chicago unlike UA, CO and DL.

As was said, everyone has their preference.

*Early Morning flight to Dallas concelled from OAK. There seemed to be no supervisory staff to deal with rebooking. It took hours but was resolved by busing us to SFO for a flight to Miami. In Miami it was unclear if I would have a seat on the last flight of the day to San Juan. I did!
