Flying For Fun. Just To Fly.

Thu Jan 18, 2007 3:12 am

Have you ever bought a ticket just to fly?

I have 1 month of holidays at university and I'm going to Lisbon for three days but I would like to go somewhere just to make an "aviation-trip". I'm thinking of buying a cheap ticket just to flight, obviously wherever I go I'll do some tourism but the idea would be just to take a flight and coming back the same day.

I'm thinking on going to Frankfurt and do some spotting, what else do you recommend me? I could fly from Barcelona or Girona (Spain).

I would recommend seeing the world's largest ball of twine in Cawker City, KS, USA. I think ORD would be a sensible gateway for this.

With LCCs everywhere in Europe, a thing i want to do some time is just take a wad of cash and go to the airport in the morning, and buy a ticket whereever, then the same thing from the next place etc... do it for a week and see lots of places!

With the environment hysteria now, i think we need to fly alot while prices are still this low.

Yep - MAN-STN-HAJ-MAN-STN in a day (£30 - bargain!). Great fun, though my connection in HAJ was retimed so I only had a 90 minute layover, which stressed me out a little as I was worried about delays.

Once from DEN-LAS and back as a passenger.

Now most of my flying is as a pilot, it's much more fun (even if it's still student piloting)

Yeah, last summer I had "cabin fever" - or the lack-of-airline-flying equivalent.

So one afternoon I was sitting and the girl who would soon become my girlfriend was out of town, and I was just like, let's see...

So i looked at airline websites, found a UA roundtrip from CID-LAX through ORD (744 each way between ORD and LAX) that would also get me back to Cedar Rapids less than a day later. I also had two upgrades that were about to expire, so I made the ridiculously impulsive decision and did it.

It was neat, and I sat in the upper deck business class on the long flights.

Only about four people who I know in real-life know about it. It's my secret...hehe

I often do this.

Jump on the cheapest you can get from any airport, and do a few over a week or so.

LMAO!!!! Hialeah is definitely my 'day trip' hot spot!  Wink Anywhere in NJ isn't my idea of fun, unless it involved the 'Unofficial Sopranos Tour'!

I have done trips like this just for the day, even a LHR-LAX with one nights stay in LA!  Smile

I used to do it a lot, however considering the nice new 'green taxes'  Yeah sure we have in the UK, I won't be doing any more of them from here. Few examples are;

- PLH-BRS-DUB-BRS-PLH on Air Southwest DHC8 and Ryanair B732. (£50)
- BHX-BFS-STN-GLA-BHX on BMI Baby B735, Easyjet B737, Air Berlin B737 and FlyBe BAe143. (£90)
- BHX-DUB-SNN-LPL-BCN-LHR-MAN on Ryanair B738, Aer Lingus A333, Ryanair B738, Easyjet B737, BA B763 and BMI A319. (£180)
- BHX-DUB-STN-GLA-BHX on Ryanair B738's, Air Berlin F100 and FlyBe BAe143.(£90)
- LHR-AMS-JFK-FCO-LHR on KLM B733 + B744, Delta B763 and Alitalia MD82. (£220)
- MAH-BCN-LHR, LGW-MAH on Air Nostrum CRJ900, BA B752 and ThomsonFly B762. (£40)

All of there were booked at rock bottom prices as shown in brackets, on one occasion it cost me just £5.82 to fly SNN-LPL, and it's a fun day (or two) out! On future trips like this I shall do the majority of my flying outside of the UK to avoid taxes.
