Opinions Of China Eastern And PVG?

Thu Jan 25, 2007 9:42 pm

I am looking at the possiblity of travelling China Eastern from LHR to BKK via PVG this summer.

I've heard poor opinions of MU so far, how would you guys rate them?

Is MU a good airline or not, I will be travelling in Y on the A340?

How is PVG, I've heard it is a good airport!

PVG is a home airport for me. Fantastic architechture, very modern designs, and functional too. Nothing - almost - to buy airside though, so dont hold on for that!!

How long between flights? The MAGLEV is fantastic if you have long enough for a quick ride.

Is there any particular reason for you to choose MU?

I've flown with MU a few years ago from HKG to Shanghai.

Service was average, can't compare them with other top Asian Airlines.

Food was surprisingly good. Perhaps because it was ex-HKG?

IFE was poor as only main screen was available with NO audio channel.

If given a choice, I wouldn't choose MU on long haul trips.  Smile
cathay pacific, now you're really flying

I've flown MU both intra-China and intra-Asia; never intercontinental.

I've always enjoyed flying with MU. I've flown the A346 in Y from PVG to ICN and the cabin was spotless, the F/As excellent and the food was good. Just flown a MD-90 from HKG to HGH on Thursday in C and again, excellent.

My longest flights have been between PVG/NRT and PVG/SIN on A300s. Not the most modern of cabins, although again good food and service. Sometimes I have no option but to travel on MU, however given a choice I would not hesitate to use them if the schedules and prices were right.

Just my opinions.

Cheers

I flew them twice, once from SYD to PVG and domestically to Beijing.
Perfectly acceptable airline with good service and food was very very good. The A340's are a bit old now but I heard the -600s are brilliant. PVG airport is a lovely terminal and as stated before take the Maglev train into town and back, It's an amazing way to travel.
I remember when the DC-3 was new!

Just the price, they offered a lower fare then some airlines. I will be travelling from LON to BKK/SGN/USM in August. I mite well go back to CX again. I will give direct services a miss and also services via the Gulf a miss this time.

I realy did want to fly via ICN or NRT, but I cant seem to find any cheap fares! Does anyone know where I can?

Just out of curioisty, how is China Southern?

PVG is very nice. The only problem is that it takes forever for immigration, on arrival. As said before, MAglev is absolutely amazing !
I took MU only once for PVG-HKG : standard, nothing exceptional but nothing bad either

As I mentioned in another thread... I flew MU on a LAX-PEK-PVG trip a few years ago on an MD-11 before they were all converted to freighters.
Excellent airline, great service and food. Since this was a few years ago... PTVs weren't there. However the screen was large enough for everyone to see if they wanted, so no problem there.
Personally, I could care less about PTVs, you're on a freakin plane... enjoy it. Look out the window and read a book if you get bored lol.

I would recommend this airline to anyone without any sort of hesitation.

I have flown to and within the China regularly for the past 11 years. My rule is to avoid Chinese airlines, including MU, as much as possible. If everything goes according to plan (no flight delays. lost luggage, ticket problems), flying with them is ok. But the Chinese have not entirely adopted the western business model, and they are typically unconcerned about their customers. Once they have your money, they have done enough except get you there any way, any how, regardless of how miserable you are. I have a few stories about that, but those can wait for another time.

Employees do not respond well to concerns or complaints. Customer service reps. may be completely indifferent to your situation. And don't expect explanations or information if you flight is delayed. You just sit there with no idea what will happen next or how long you will have to wait. So, my strong advice to you is stick with U.S. carriers.

I've been to Thailand many, many times. I used to travel alot from HKG (when I lived there) to Thailand for short breaks. I still love the country, although I have to travel a bit further to get there now  Wink

Do you go to Thailand alot?

Me and Mr Al Baker may see you with Mr Tim Clark  Wink  bigthumbsup
