Fare Prices In...Help Me Choose Please!

Wed Jan 31, 2007 4:39 pm

Okay so some of you know I was working around trying to get airfare at the cheapest cost to do humanitarian ade work in Kenya this summer. Well I was going threw so much stuff trying to get reponses and finally they have come in! I would like your guyses opinions on what I should get for the whole time based on airline service and comfort. The amount of PAX are 28.

Option 1:

Virgin Atlantic $1,880 (Get 30 PAX to help out and they said they will pay for the 31st + drop of price for us)
SFO - LHR Boeing 747-400 operated by Virgin Atlantic
LHR - NBO Boeing 767-300 operated by Kenya Airways or
LHR - NBO Airbus A340-300 operated by Virgin Atlantic

Option 2:

British Airways $2,055 (No help on price or humanitarian relief)
SFO - LHR Boeing 747-400 operated by British Airways
LHR - NBO Boeing 747-400 operated by British Airways

Option 3:

KLM $2,300 (No help on price or humanitarian relief)
SFO - AMS Boeing 747-400 operated by British Airways
AMS - NBO Boeing 747-400 operated by British Airways

Option 4:

Continental Airlines $2,150 ($175 price reduction for helping in Africa)
SFO - IAH Boeing 737-800 operated by Continental Airlines
IAH - AMS Beoing 767-300 operated by Continental Airlines
AMS - NBO Boeing 747-400 operated by KLM

Option 5:

Emirates $2,100 (No help on price or humanitarian relief)
SFO - JFK Boeing 757-200 operated by Delta Airlines
JFK - DXB Boeing 777-300ER operated by Emirates
DXB - NBO Airbus A330-200 operated by Emirates or
DXB - NBO Airbus A340-500 operated by Emirates

So what would you guys choose and why? I will be putting the downpayment on these tickets by Monday of next week. As you can see, this is a lot of money for 28 people.

Thanks everyone!

Apparently saving $$$ is important, so take option 1 and fly LHR-NBO with KQ to get the African feeling  Cool

I would vote for Option 1 with the Virgin option for these reasons:
- It is a one-stop itinerary. Multiple stops with a group the size of yours can get awfully complicated, so keep it as simple as possible.
- Also for the sake of simplicity, staying on Virgin will keep you in Terminal 3. Switching to Kenya for the second flight will involve a terminal change to Terminal 4. Another complication when you have 28 passengers traveling internationally.
- Virgin Atlantic ON AVERAGE has the highest passenger satisfaction rankings among Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, KLM, and Continental. Emirates ranks higher than Virgin Atlantic, but then you have two stops, a higher airfare, and a terminal change.
- The airfare is the lowest of your options, and the savings really add up for 28 people.
- They are reducing your airfare since you are traveling for humantiarian reasons, which is a great thing. It shows that they want to have you as passengers and that they are supportive of your cause.

So I suggest Virgin Atlantic via Heathrow.

Have you ever flown KQ before? If you have, what are they like?

Thank you for your suggestion. I think you make great points and it is awesome that Virgin did help us out a lot. Even eating the 31st ticket if get get 2 more to go is amazing!

Does this mean $2,150 with the price reduction or $1,975?

But if price matters take option one: virgin atlantic, anyway they are very good (usually).

Looks great, but I bet that Virgin Atlantic are thinking, 'two more paying customers = $$$ and giving a free ticket would not hurt us as it will probably not be a full flight.

Anyway, a win-win situation.

I do #3 or #5. AMS is a great airport to transfer at, and EK is something special, so is DXB.

How does that make a difference? But the dates are 3rd July 2007 - 17th July 2007

Answer above. Well that price is just for one ticket correct? So you must find out how many tickets are at that price in which class seating. I found tickets as well for $1500 just for one but not all 28 will be that price because of group purchasing.

So far:

#1: 7
#2: 0
#3: 1
#4: 0
#5: 1

Thanks everyone! This is really helpful!

Price reduction was already included so final cost is $2,150

Price does matter actually in this trip. But comfort as well because of it being long flights. So if a ticket is an extra $50-$100 more and more comfortable, we will take that.

DXB - NBO Airbus A340-500 operated by Emirates

Unless that's changed, I believe that you could be referring to a Airbus A340-300.

Although I haven't travelled on DL, EK are a pretty decent airline, ice on the 773ER is the best in the world, but DXB has gone downhill and the 3-4-3 config may trouble you as bit. But the planes without ice are still perfectly adequate.

Alright so heres an update...Emirates has lowerd the price to $1960. So right now its between VS at $1880 with only a stop in LHR or EK at $1960 with a stop in JFK & DXB.

I'd be so all over the VS offer by now, it wouldn't even be funny. Spending an additional $80 per person to fly out of the way for a second connection in DXB with such a large group wouldn't even be on the table for me to consider.

How are flights going over the Atlantic in the summer months? Is it very bumpy?
