How & When Did You Initially Find Airliners.net

Wed Jan 31, 2007 11:37 am

Hey guys,

Just a simple, straight forward question. How did you find anet? For me, I was exceptionally bored at work and was just about to start training in a Piper Seminole. This was in August of 2005. I Googled Piper Seminole and found the link to this page and started exploring the other links posted on the page. After that, like the geek that I am, I was hooked. I signed up within the next few days, and 970ish posts later I still love it! How about you?

I was searching for N747PA under Google, and this site came up. I did this about late 1999 or early 2000. I hung around for many years, before finally joining last July.

Brother used to post on this site. He joined in 99' and I always used to watch him read the forums ever since I was 8 years old. Finally, after 6 more years I joined in 2005.

I seached British Airways pics on google, this came up, and within 2 months, i was a member. I remember surfin the forums b4 i joined, some of the more comical members was what really got me to join. Aerowesty, Cedars747, Falcon84, AerospaceFan were the main reasons why I joined really, just wanted to be able to jump into some of the conversations.  Smile

Incidentally, I also wanted to be able to do the quiz thingy, and not just the sample.

Cheers,

One of the guys in Ops at O'Hare, when I was with ACA, would always be checking out photos of a/c at 4:00 A.M. and throughout our work shift. I finally joined the forums in January of 2005 (but left after devoting so much time to this while I was getting my dispatch license and while ACA/DH/IDE was on the verge of Ch. 7).

I had just finished with a hooker down on Van Buren St. when out of nowhere this car comes flying down the sidewalk with two guys shooting automatic weapons out the rear passenger window. I heard a loud explosion and that's when this dog ran up to me and told me to join up with Airliners.net.

On a friend's computer a long time ago - back when the internet still had a dirt floor.

We were searching for pictures of an ONA L-188 and found this site, but aDOTn didn't have such a picture yet.

I was looking for pictures of St. Maarten before the first trip I made in 2002. I had no idea about Maho Beach, or anything, until I saw the pics available here. I didn't notice the forums until a couple of years later, when I came back to find pics of some other plane.

It was so long ago, that a.net did not have more than 3000 pictures then. I then e-mailed Johan because he had misspelled the 'search' button ('seach'). He e-mailed back a 'thank you'.

I used to buy plenty of airliner magazines to keep in touch, and this site certainly saved me money.

I was googling for aircraft photos when it came up with airliners.net. I tried searching many different ways and it always came up A.net. So, I realized that this is the place to be. Initially, I was just hooked on to photo search, and it was only after I found an Air India related thread in the forum snapshot on homepage that I decided to expore further.
that's my short story.

Wow... the earliest I ever recall surfing around this site was probably 6th grade, meaning 2000. I may have known of the site before, but I don't have any memory of A.net before then.

Of course, it took almost 5 years to become a member, back in December 2004. Best Christmas present my dad ever got me!

Now this is sorta strange, but I discovered A.net while living on Van Buren Road in Los Angeles. It's in the ghetto right near USC, and therefore has probably seen it's fair share of hookers and shootings. I had no idea it had also seen the immense (un-)coolness of the Coz.

Anyway, while living there, one day I decided to search for airliner and airport photos online, and voila. Discovered Tech/Ops a few weeks later, and joined up.

Just checked/searched to verify...my first post was back in June 2000...I was going to book a flight and wanted info on ticketing, etc...and looked for web forums that might give some aid...found this and Flyertalk(?)...took a few yeras before I even looked at Non-Av...only posted on topics that really interested me...now I use it mostly and Civil Av on rare occasions...

Probably have looked at photos part of site only about 2-3 times a year...

I still find forums useful to get almost instant updates on certain stories that occur in other parts of the country or world...

Found forums, noted a few folks, joined and electronically "met" a few folks, even went to an a.net meet in LAS. Most irresponsible thing I've ever done, but the experience and the aquaintances were and remain unregrettable.

A couple years ago I was looking for cool pictures of 747's and I found this site. I always liked it and came back. Eventually I got into the forums and stuff and wanted to try getting my own pictures on here, so I got a photographers account. After awhile I decided to get a regular account and now months later, here I am.

Back in the day, some 2 1/2 years ago, as a prepubescent Logan22L, I was trolling the interwebby thang for info on the 747, and I hit upon here. Having seen such worthless, inane, psychotic drivel from so many of you, I had to join, if only to become so idiotic and pathetic as to call myself one of you all.

Some time in the fall (October?) of 2004.

I was a senior at Penn State and was searching for a new desktop wallpaper after buying a nice NEC monitor.

I settled on this one:

Arguably, this site was responsible for my change of heart toward commercial airplanes. I previously thought airliners were boring and was more interested in other areas of the aerospace field (I was studying for an Aero degree).
I've done a complete 180 with my opinion. This change is partially because of this site but also because the airliner market is much more intersting than it was in the early days of my college career, 2000-2004.

In the spring and summer of 2005 I had a cubicle job right across the street from DSM under the final approach. I'd watch CRJs and UA 737s land all day instead of working, which renewed my interest in aviation. After that I did a couple related Google searches that brought up this site, and I lurked until January when I finally signed up to post a trip report.

I believe I first came upon the site in late 2001 early 2002. I know this because it was sometime after September 11th and sometime before a trip to Hawaii I had in 2002. Anyway, I heard about the site from a friend I have who is a FA at United. We rarely talked, but when we did, it was pure aviation. Being so, he let me in on it. It wasn't until 2003ish when I started lurking about the forums. And from there, it took even more time to rest upon the Non-Av.

All I can say is, why didn't I find this site earlier??

Some of my relatives wanted to see the aircraft that I flew for a living back in 1999, so I searched something like "757-200 picture" it linked to this site..

Later that day I checked back to the site and saw the thing that said something like "200,000 pictures online". So I looked for hours that day.

I never really read the forums till about a year ago. I finally decided to become one of the crazy bunch a couple months ago.

I actually came across this site after my 2001 travel to Brasil for the first time on an MD11 and loved it so stinkin much! So when I got home from Brasil, I went on the internet and typed in "Varig Airlines MD11" and up came Airliners.net and up popped the EXACT plane I had just flown.

So a 5 years later after just browsing around and free-beeing it up, I decided to get my membership.

Didn't go on here for any other reason than to find pics. Then in 2003 I found the forums, and signed up. Hung around Civ Av and Tech Ops for the first year or so, and then I discovered the mayhem otherwise known as Non av...and here I am  Smile

1. Because I was an ex Pan Am employee
2. We used to go to the airport in BGI and sit and watch the airplanes land, especially the Concorde. You can sit at the end of the runway and watch as the aircraft land , just as close as in St. Marrten
His Grandmother is also an aircraft nutter, his grandfather flew B17'S in WW2, so he comes by it naturally. Even though I served in the Navy, I still love the smell and noise of aircraft
