Restaurants That Should Be At Airports?

Sat Feb 03, 2007 4:02 am

I have long thought about this. I originate 80% of my travel out of ATL and have always wondered why Waffle House does not have a location in the main terminal as well as A or B concourse. I would love to have a chili-cheese omelet with some scattered and covered hashbrowns before boarding my flight. Of course, the person sitting next to me on the plane probably would not appreciate it as much as I do.

Anyway, is there any restaurants that you want to see in your airport that is not there now?

For those of you who do not know the Waffle House:

I have always thought that In-N-Out should try an airport location. Their burgers are almost world famous now, and I am guessing that if you have spent any time on this site looking at pics of LAX approaches than you have seen the In-N-Out sign in the background. I think they could do some great business in the international terminal at LAX and SFO.
Never let the plane take you somewhere your brain didn't get to five minutes ago.

A fast food restaurant should have the kind of food that is easy on the go. Waffles are hard to eat and run with, and they don't do well "to go," as they are best warm. Same with IHOP. KFC is too greesy.

With all the Starbucks around, I would like to see competition from Coffee Bean.

Also, how about:

Jamba Juice
Dominos
Falafel King

Well, at least @ ATL, we've got two out of three. IIRC, there's a Checkers in the food court in the middle of Concourse B, and Houlihan's has locations on A and in the Atrium.

Does Panda Express operate any airport locations? I'd rather have their food than some of the other "Chinese" eateries that you see at airports (Manchu Wok, Mandarin Express, etc.).

I have to say Cracker Barrel. Just about every airport where I've had their gravy and biscuits, left a lot to be desired.

Coffee Bean.

Are you talking about a Coffee Beanery? There's one here in ALB. Their coffee is great.
I wish that Sonic and Fuddruckers had airport locations.... best food IMO.

True, and it's the most expensive Checkers in the world. But a welcome sight all the same.

A Waffle House would be ultrashibby, I gotta say.

Now how about a nominee for restaurant that should NOT be in the airport? I'll nominate Chick-Fil-A. Why? First off, their food is overpriced and over-rated. But more importantly, they have the whole "closed on Sunday" thing, so any airport that has one has one fewer choice on Sunday. Airport choices are too limited to begin with. (BTW, I actually don't know if any airport other than TPA has one.)

I wish they'd institute a street pricing program like what many airports do. But I have to say the prices now are a lot better than they were 15-20 years ago. Back in the 80s, it would cost you nearly $10 for a meal at one of the snack bars they had. There wasn't any chain type places, everything was generic almost stadium like. One company had the main concessions contract (Which was pretty much given to them because of who they were friends with in the city government.). Eventually they lost the bulk of their contracts in the aftermath of a scandal involving bribes to airport officials that led to more companies being given the chance to come in and operate concessions. That too has been controversial because some of the concessionaires have links to former and current city officials.

Ever since I've headed down to Florida, I've subconsciously avoided Waffle Houses like the plague. My parents love them, but I can't stand them. At least I don't really go to ATL all that often.

An IHOP wouldn't be bad imo.

Though I'd like to see more Rio Wraps in airports. There's one in the McNamara Terminal in DTW near gate A60. I always grab a Rio Bravo with some Tabasco. delicious!  drool
The air in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious because it's the same the angels breathe.

I belive there is a panda express in ORD in the AA concourse. I really like the little gormet deli/grocery store thing that jetblue has at the JFK airport. Lots of variety in snacks etc.
Enough about flying lets talk about me!

In Rio, i'd like to see a Spolleto (italian food), Casa da Feijoada (why not travel ready to sleep  Smile ) and to complete the mix: Starbucks Coffee
New York + Rio de Janeiro = One of the best combinations !

Restaurants, hell, I'd rather have a supermarket, like FRA or AMS. Great way to get better food. At least you also eat when you want to.
