Been Disappointed By An Airline?

Mon Feb 12, 2007 4:11 am

I was wondering how many of you out there have been particularly disappointed when flying with an airline, because the service offered was so far removed from the hype that usually surrounds that company?

I thought about it, as my dad who is a fellow aviation nut, and I were watching Air Crash Investigation, and he was talking about an incident he had with Pan Am a few months before they went bump. He and my mum were flying Tampa to London on one of their B747s when there was a loud explosion from one of the engines shortly after take off and various reports the cabin was feeling "very hot." The aircraft circled over the ocean for 2 hours almost before diverting to Orlando. My dad kept telling my mum the 747 was a safe aircraft, and Pan Am were one of the oldest airlines in the world. With the aircraft followed in by fire engines, the flight attendants had their rosary beads out and were visibly panicking, far from the professional, cool image they ought to be offering. The next day when the passengers returned to the airport to fly home, an American woman sitting next to my dad felt the seatbelt was flimsy so called over one of the flight attendants. When she tugged on it, the seatbelt came out in her hand. The woman lept up saying "Call TWA or British, I'm not flying this over the pond." My dad said as much as he loved seeing the Pan Am aircraft at Heathrow and always thought of them as a world leader of aviation, the unprofessionalism of the crew and the general shabby service and interior was enough to put him off flying them again, though they subsequently went bump a few months later.

Obviously this is an extreme story recounted to me a few years after the event, but I'm wondering of what experiences people have had to put them off an airline they thought they'd enjoy flying.

I flew MyTravel last year to Rhodes. I was VERY disappointed after having good memories of this airline from the past. The seats were worn and uncomfortable...something was sticking into my back the whole trip. The food was awful and the IFE didn't work.

From the UK, Rhodes is a 4 hour trip so it was an unpleasant flight. I will never fly them again.

Back in April of 2004, I flew ATL-LAS on an AirTran flight that was operated by Ryan International. Having flown on AirTran in the past (as a non-rev though) I was a bit disappointed in the quality of service that Ryan Int'l had. I've seen waitresses on the graveyard shift @ Waffle House have better attitudes. The a/c was cramped (the seat pitch was at least an inch or two less than what FL has on their 717s) and the plane was a bit rickety (When we landed @ LAS, the overhead bins were shaking so bad I thought that they were going to fall from the ceiling). I had such an awful experience on that flight that I decided to take an FL flight that routed LAS-DFW-ATL instead of flying on Ryan Int'l nonstop. Even the FL gate agent @ LAS told me that it had become common for pax to switch to the FL operated flight instead of flying nonstop (I was just glad I remembered FL had started flying LAS-DFW-ATL). I ended up in the last row of the 717 for both legs, but the service and the seating was miles better than Ryan Int'l.

Last summer in July, YVR-SFO-YVR. Boeing 737-400, every seat full both ways. Only 3 flight attendants, 1 for F and 2 for Y. It was early, about 7:30am YVR-SFO, they should have had Buy-Onboard, and supper time coming back, still no buy-onboard. Just one beverage service, and a small package on some nondescript salty snack. Not particularly friendly, but not bad either. Just got the impression none of the flight crew really had a pride in what they were doing, especially after all the hype about how wonderful AS is supposed to be.
Same on AC in Sept '06. YYZ-AMS/DUB-YYZ not up to AC's usual International standard. Had flown with them in Apr '06 YVR-SYD-YVR (both flights via HNL, on 300ER), and the service and food were marvelous (Y-class). Some of the best catering I have ever had between SYD-HNL.
All of the hype about AC Transatlantic, especially with competition to UK and Ireland, I would have thought they could do a lot better. I got the feeling it would be about on a par with Zoom or Air Transat.
Cheers,

AA

First trip ever with them was a disaster. ORD-MIA-Barbados-SJU-NAS(Diverted)-MIA-ORD

ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE!

ATR sucked, MD80 and A300 were old. Put on stand-by at MIA but rude CSA's. Missed flight to ORD at SJU (atleast 20 pax were headed to ORD with us, we were 10 min late and they closed the flight without us knowing it was the last flight to ORD and that 20 people would miss it)

You get the point.

Ill stick with Southwest and UA

I haven't had anything bad enough to actually put me off flying an airline again, but my worst flight was with an airline with a good reputation, and an airline that I've generally enjoyed, Frontier.

This was DEN-MSP on the Penguins A319 back in December. Weather was nice when we took off around dusk. I had recently gotten off of a flight from PHX, and I saw a marathon of a program I enjoyed on TV, so I went ahead and paid for the TV service early, before we even pushed back. I found the program and was watching it, when we took off. As soon as we made our turn to the northeast, the TV service stopped working. This happens on turns a lot, but in this case, the TVs didn't come back on. Right about then, some moderate turbulence began and continued for the first half of the flight. We were over northeastern Nebraska when the turblence finally stopped. Then, rather than commencing the beverage service, now pressed for time, the FAs went ahead and spent at least twenty minutes trying to get the TVs to work. Finally they just gave refunds to those who had paid cash. I had paid with a card, and they said that there would be a CSR/Gate Agent in MSP who could provide us with a phone number to get our money back (however, our aircraft was to RON in MSP, and no gate agents were present). Finally, over the Sioux Falls area, the FAs started a limited beverage service of water or coffee only. The only good thing that happened was that I was planning on having water anyway, but it did seem like they did this service from the front and back of the plane simultaneously and heading to the middle. I was in the middle and didn't get my water until we were down around 20,000 ft (I know this because the moving map was up and working, even though the DirecTV was not). So, I basically had to guzzle my water rather than really enjoy it, because they immediately began trash collection after the mini-beverage service.

But still, I've had nothing but positive experiences on all my other Frontier flights, and I did and will fly them again. No airline is guaranteed to have a positive experience every time, although some try harder than others. But this flight was very disappointing by Frontier's standards.

While PA was one of my favoured airline in the mid 80's-90 I had similar experience in B class, interior loose, falling of the walls... just shabby torwards the end of PA

If you haven't been disappointed by an airline in some manner then you probablyhaven't flown the airlines very often.

My wife and I flew Delta first class from Los Cabos, Mexico to Salt Lake City in December of last year (2006). Although the flight is under 3 hours, it was an international flight at the dinner hour and one would have thought that there would have been even a sandwich in first class. Instead, all we got was choices out of the same snack basket they passed around in coach. Airliners.net members probably are not surprised by this on Delta, but given it was international first class I was disappointed nonetheless.

The only airline that has consistently disappointed me is United. Whether it was the crabby gate agents, the overbearing flight attendants, or just the overall attitude of the employees that I encountered (for the most part), something always seems to happen that makes for a bad flight. The two exceptions to this rule are from 1998 or 1999 on a DFW-DEN 727 flight where the pilot and FAs were absolutely great and last October on the ORD-DFW leg of an MHT-DFW trip. The lead flight attendant on that leg was absolutely a riot! She kept us entertained and smiling throughout the flight.

Pretty much every airline has had a failing at some point when I've flown them, the lone exception being WesternPacific.

My first KL flight in WBC was a total disappointment. The food was mediocre at best, the cabin crew snobby. Thank god KL has proven the opposite as well.  Big grin

Spot freaking on.

I love the rants on here about someone that didn't get an extra pillow, an equal amount of champagne and oj in their mimosa, and the most popular, luggage damage stories. Shit happens daily on the Ops side, my biggest complaint is the service in-flight.

The ever present attitude of cabin crew that feel it necessary to give less than average service cause their employer gave them the shaft after 2001 and cut their wages by 30%.

My mum got disapointed by Lufthansa. She was expecting German effiency and it seems she got a bunch of amateurs who kept trying to tell her the plane was still on time when it should have been in the air two hours ago.

The last time I flew LH, they greatly disappointed me. I was to go to STR with my German class for an exchange trip. They kept on telling us the flight to FRA was on time yet we left 1.5 hours late. We missed our connection in FRA (around 45 min) so we had to sit in FRA for 5 hours. They also lost most of our bags. In retrospect, we could've gone to the Hauptbahnhof in Frankfurt and take a train down to Esslingen and we still would've been at our final destinations earlier than flying down there with our new layover.

Also on the flight back home, we flew on one of the ex Sabena A332s (D-AIME, how ironic). My friend and I weren't so lucky as we sat in seats with vomit stains on them and the flight was full of people who didn't want to change their seats and the F/As kept on refusing to let us change seats. Also the PTV screens kept on flickering throughout the flight. It was a real downer knowing my flight to Germany was on a brand new A333.
The air in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious because it's the same the angels breathe.

The socalled "business class" section of intra Scandinavian routes flying with SAS. There is NO food included on even business class if you fly SAS within scandinavia.. was quite disappointed after having used 4000 extra eurobonus points for a biz class upgrade  Sad

otherwise I haven't been disappointed.. you generally get what you pay for.
