Airports With Only One Or Two Jetways

Fri Feb 16, 2007 12:04 am

Are there alot of airports worldwide that have only one or two operating jetways? I know there are a lot that do not have any so i have always wondered how many airports have one or two.

Thanks

on a side note, does anyone know when TOL will be finished with their whole remodel and will they be adding jet bridges for the RJ's?

Chittagong (CGP) in Bangladesh has only 2 jetways. The airport is served by 3 passenger carriers: Biman (F-28, A310, DC10), Thai (A300, B737) and GMG (MD-82, DHC-8).

Well I know that Surat Thani airport in thailand has only one, however when boarding the Air Asia flight to Bangkok we didn't use that one, instead we had to walk to the airplane which was parked in the remote apron, Even though it was the only aircraft visible at the airport then.

You can actually see a picture here (sorry for the quality but only used my cell-phone camera)

White Plains, NY (Westchester County) airport - HPN - has either 1 or 2 jetways - all other flights are boarded through doors. Majority of flights are commuter jets or props, with only selected mainline jets (Airtran, Jetblue).

I've been through 3 US airports that only had a couple of jetways: IDA (IIdaho Falls), PIH (Pocatello), and AVP (Scranton-Wilkes Barre).

IDA/PIH mainly get Skywest and Horizon traffic (though Horizon just abandoned PIH), and AVP seems to mainly get RJ's. (I flew a US 733 on the way in and a Dash-8 on the way out.)

I think Cape Town, S.Africa only has either 1 or 2 jetways and that is in the international terminal.
The domestic terminal does not have any and pax are taken by bus. However, its a modern and functional
airport.

Here in Spain, La Coruna or Santander only have two jetways.....by the way in SDR they are not used very often, most of the operations are ANS regional jets or Ryanair flights, and none of these are docked at jetways there.

Yes, they are only two jetways in Cape Town, used often by widebodies. Another African Airport with two jetways is Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, a former Spanish Colony. There are some flights linking Madrid with this town and even a Swiss flight.

My home airport, YYJ just has 2. One of them is used exclusively by AC I believe for their A32X flight to YYZ, and CRJ's to YYC, YEG, etc. The other is used by charter carriers such as Harmony, Transat and Skyservice. I have never seen WestJet use the jetbridges...

Many more jetways planned with the expansion of the airport as three new terminals are to be built within next 7 years.

BFL has a brand new terminal but only three jetways (but there's room for eventual expansion). With Continental Express leaving for the summer, and no rush to replace them, this shouldn't be a problem.

IIRC, XNA only has three jetways. With the explosive growth of that airport, I wonder how long until it expands.

Forbes Field (FOE) in Topeka, KS has one jetway. I stopped there once on a Navy C-9B enroute to El Centro one year. The terminal was completely empty, less the FBO that is based there. All the check-in counters were not in use. I think Allegiant Air flies there now however. They probably utilize that single jetway.

Can anyone in Topeka verify this? Pictures maybe?

ONT had only 1 jetway prior to the building of the new terminals in the last decade or so. That 1 jetway was built for Western and used by Delta after the merger. All others, including CO's DC-10-10s to Denver Stapleton, used airstairs. BUR experimented with a few jetways before realizing they were pointless and are still all stair.

AMA has only 4 jetways, despite recieving service from WN, AE and COEX.

I think that had more to do with the fact that a law prohibits ANY upgrade, expansion, or re-modelling of ANY facility at BUR without a super-majority approval of the voters nearby (67%). That would include jetways.

No, because that experiment was years before those rules, which were targeted at the fact that Lockheed was going to GIVE the airport authority to land to make the airport conform to FAA regulations and expand gate capacity, were implemented. The jetways were aesthetically unpleasing and slowed down the airport. They also took up valuable space.

There is the BA gate, the Gate 11 airbridge, and now gate 9 has an airbridge.

BA can only use A320 sized a/c on their gate now, 757s have to either use a non airbridge, or use gate 11 (primarily used by charter airlines). Gate 9 has had an airbridge fitted for use by Emirates, and charter ops when the EK A330 isn't in/
