World's Largest Airport?

Mon Feb 19, 2007 10:22 am

What is the world's largest airport? By looking at Google Earth, could it be TLS or MCO?

In terms of land area? BOS and DFW should be in the running, then.

Isn't the Airport from Ryaad (S Arabia) the largest in the world (in m²) ?

In terms of land I think DEN should be up there.

This has been discussed before. There are many similar titles at the bottom of the page.

If anyone cares, TUS has more land area than LAX. They don't use all of it, but they do have more.

IIRC, yes.

Just checked it out and king khaled airport is a whopping 225.000.000 m² that's about 10 X 10 square miles for you non metrics (roughly).

In terms of reserved land, then it is DMM with a whopping 776 km2. However only 43km2 is actually used.

BOS? Not even in the top 50 I would imagine.

DFW is the largest in the world based on square feet of runway surface area.... which I think its a much better determination of physical size of the airport than land area (which isn't necessairly used). DEN comes in 2nd.

DFW = 13.9 million sqft
DEN = 12.2 million sqft

Also, DEN and DFW lead in combined length of all runways.

DFW = 80403ft
DEN = 76000ft

Any way you cut it, even if they're not the largest in some terms (such as owned land area), both of these airports are seriously massive.

The winner is DEN. This talk about *runway square footage* is nonsensical. What about all the other movement areas? What about the terminal!

BOS? That was a joke, presumably. BOS is one of the smallest international airports in the world.

Seriously folks, its not the Size that counts, but how you use it  Smile

DFW, ATL, IAH all use their massive land areas to hold lots of traffic.

ORD, BOS, and LAX use their minimal area to maximize their traffic. (Note: JFK is a smaller airport, passenger wise its busy, but traffic wise, not so).

I know HKG has the biggest terminal in the world, not sure about total airport area though.

Isn't the new terminal at Suvarnabhumi the largest single terminal building in the world?

Just to "piggyback" on these folks comments, DFW has 7 runways on it and held talks with the good people of Grapevine, TX and other surrounding communities to see if a 8th runway would be feasible (I don't know the outcome). It's crazy to see 4 different aircraft lined up on short finals from the north using 4 different runways at the same time.

I had posted this before on someone's thread and ADDED SOME THINGS TO IT HERE, but the 10 largest US airport landmasses (acres) are:

I tried a post about the 10 Largest US airport landmasses, but it got deleted for being a duplicate.

I had gotten as far as identifying:

1. DEN (38000 acres)
2. DFW (17000+)
3. MCO (15000)
4. PIT (12000)
5. I got a three-way tie: IAD, IAH, and MCI - all with 10000 acres. I got the information from Wikipedia. In the past, IAD was 5th with 10000 acres; MCI had 9000, and IAH had ~8900. Since then, airport authorities across the country have bought land and built infrastructure (runways, terminals, etc.).

Quoting ATCT (Reply 10):

OKC is 8000 acres according to the OKC website

After those, I saw that ORD has 7700 acres, but I couldn't get any further.

Of course, I also saw on Wikipedia that BLV, near St. Louis, encompasses 7003 acres (including Scott AFB - which has an 8000' parallel runway 7000' south and west of the 10000' strip). That puts the struggling airfield in some heady company. Perhaps 8th place.

While DTW is big, I've never seen it in the top 10 for US airports. According to the Metro airport website, it's 6700 acres with the new runway. Before that, I think it was like 4900 acres. So perhaps this is #9?

ATL is only 4700 acres.

Yes, but it is the busiest and is still growing.
5 runways now.
A second "South" terminal will be built (ground breaking around end of this year supposedly) that will add an additional 36-40 more gates.
After or during construction of the "South" terminal will be the addition of a dedicated "International" terminal past the E concourse where it will house all customs, ticketing and baggage along with 15-20 gates I believe.

Not how many acres you got but how you utilize them!

Yes, I guess Hong Kong has the largest single terminal building in the world, with over 500,000 sq. meters.

However, the largest terminal complex in the world is Madrid-Barajas airport. The combined floor area of it's terminals is 1,000,000 sq meters. According to AENA (Spanish airports authority) It has a grand total of 230 boarding gates (104 equipped with jetways) and about 260-270 aircraft parking positions.

This has been asked many times in the past. The answer is still Damman, Saudi Arabia. DMM is the largest in the world. That is, until the new Dubai airport is completed.

ORD HAS to be one of the world's largest airports as far as land mass goes.

The first time I saw the above picture my eyes went wide open and my jaw hit the floor. I had never known an airport could be so insanely big. Crazy thing is DFW is even bigger. I don't even wanna think about the new Dubai airport.

That's correct. And that's why I said "I guess", because I wasn't 100% sure.

Bangkok's new terminal has a floor area of about 565,000 sq. meters, making it the biggest single terminal in the world.

Another big one that will soon enter service (2008) is BCN's new south terminal, with a floor area of 525,500 sq. meters.
