Travel To Detroit

Sun Feb 25, 2007 5:22 pm

I'm going to be flying to Detroit for the Oregon-MIchigan football in September and I'm looking at tickets from PDX. Even though I'm a premier exec on United and a loyal flyer, they're $100 more expensive to DTW than AA and NWA leaving around the same times. My question is what airline would you rather fly a trans-con from PDX to DTW? Both participate in Alaska's mileage plan and that's causing me to be unsure on which airline I would like to fly. Also I haven't flown on AA since there more room throughout coach in 2003 and I know they took that away and I've never flown on NWA before. I would appreciate any feedback or suggestions

Have you also considered to use WN ? But they do not accept bookings for September, yet ...

OTOH, if timings & costs are okay for you, I would try to use NW's nonstop service PDX-DTW (= avoiding to connect at delay-prone ORD).

I looked at NW non-stop however its showing one leg with coach already sold out!! Only first is available, therefore I have to connect either in MSP or ORD. As much as possible I would prefer to only fly airlines that I can get mileage credit with either Alaska or United.

You got time to spare? Go to O'hare.
Try CO into CLE and backtrack to DTW. Or Frontier thru Denver. They have nice on board entertainment.

You could also try flying into Toledo, Oh. Its only a 35 minute drive instead of a 20 min drive from dtw. The 15 min extra may be a way to go.

If you fly NW you get the check out the amazing Terminal they have there. AA and UA you don't have that option.

Being Elite with both AA and NW, I find both airlines to have an equal product in coach. In your case, I actually would suggest NW for two simple reasons:
1. NW is non-stop whereas AA is through DFW or ORD.
2. NW has an amazing terminal in DTW which is worth a visit.

I also have other reasons for suggesting NW over AA, but without opening a can of worms, from my experience I would take NW over AA any day of the week if the price was the same.

At the same time, the online seat maps are not anywhere near accurate.

Yeah I've been looking at seatguru a lot lately and it looks like both airlines are going to be cramped. I know there's no entertainment on NWA, but is there anything on AA's MD's? I guess I feel pretty spoiled when I fly United most of the time and I listen to channel 9!! I really would like to see NWA's DTW terminal, do you know if Continental or Delta fly out of the new terminal?
