Strangest Reason Your Flight's Been Delayed

Sat Mar 03, 2007 5:31 am

I was once on a flight from IAD to SMF that was delayed for two hours because, at least according to the gate agent, the flight crew went to the wrong airport. Granted, I don't fly all that often comapred to some, but that's the strangest reason I've ever heard for a flight to be delayed.

Who else has a story about a flight being delayed for an unusual reason?

I was once on SR111 (before the crash), and the flight was delayed about 11 hours because (reportedly) the pilot had been arrested for indecent exposure, and it took that long to get a replacement.

Goats. Benkulu (BKS) about a year ago. There were two of them munching grass beside the runway and a boy on a motorbike was dispatched to chase them away. Caused minimal delay but much amusement.

Incoming plane hit a moose upon landing at the airport prior to ours. Apparently both the CV-580 and the moose both didn't fare very well.

I don't really think this is that strange but I was delayed 45 minutes for a Leaky Coffee Maker.

I was on a Comair CRJ from IAD to CVG and we were delayed 2 hours becuase the plane was over fueled and the ramp people couldn't figure out how to off load fuel. After 3 tries the ground staff finally came on and asked for 6 people to get off!

Its a few years ago now but I was to fly BKK-VTE on a Thai Airbus A300-600. The aircraft had a toilet leak and was spilling its contents on the tarmac, the smell was diabolical. We were advised we were going to use another aircraft and the 200 odd passengers all walked to another gate to see a 737-400 and the amusing question arose of " who doesn't want to fly today?' We were all herded to yet another gate enjoying our walking tour of BKK airport and we came upon an A330 and we began to board. There were no F/As on board and no flight crew and we assumed that we would somehow fly ourselves there. Every one off again and back to the original gate only to be told that the aircraft was delayed because there was nothing wrong with it.
The pool of effluent that it was standing in however told a different story. We took off 2 hours late with an otherwise uneventful flight with only the aft lavatories available for use.
I remember when the DC-3 was new!

For me, the strangest reason was simply no reason. We boarded, pushed back, and then thus began our 8 hour long wait on the ground right next to the gate. No explanation given. Eight hours after pushback, plane taxied to runway and took-off for our 2 hour flight from SEA to SFO.

Weird day.

I have had delayed or cancelled flights for the following reasons:

A catering truck while jacked up to the plane fell over onto the wing when a thurnderstorm came thru the airport and blew the truck over onto the wing of a 747-100. This happened at DFW.

A cracked windshield on a 707.

The DL flight attendant showed up for an originating flight at ICT with a hangover and this cancelled the flight.

They changed an engine on a BN 747 while the airplane sat AT THE GATE in DFW. The process took 5 hours while the passengers sat and watched thru the gate windows.

During a UA pilot union work slow down, a pilot cancelled a flight because of a weather radar issue that was minor.

During a UA pilot union work slow down, a pilot waited until it was time for pushback to report an inspection light in the nose wheel well was out. This delayed the flgiht 45 minutes while the bulb was replaced.

I had an ATL-LGA flight on FL (Non rev joyride up to LGA, and back) delayed about two hours because we didn't have a captain. Crew scheduling had forgotten that the captain they had assigned to the flight was on vacation that week. For some reason, they couldn't get any captain who was in close range of ATL (I'm guessing duty time regs or other operational reasons), so they had one deadhead to ATL from RDU.

I recently was scheduled to fly Delta on UIO-GYE-ATL. I got to the airport Friday night for the flight, only to find that it was cancelled. Delta put everyone up in the Hilton in Quito for two nights before sending a plane down to pick us up. We left on Sunday morning. No one ever explained what happened with our original flight. Do any of you know? This was in January.

A few years ago I was on a Delta flight ATL-RDU. They boarded the first class pax, then a few minutes later they all deplaned. That's not a good sign, I thought. It turned out someone in first class had broken a light bulb while trying to stuff a slightly too large bag into the overhead compartment. We were delayed for about 45 minutes while the crew searched for a vaccuum cleaner to clean up the broken glass.

A trip on AS FAI-ANC-JNU-SEA turned out to be a comedy of errors. Everybody boards the plane in FAI, and it's a full plane because it's Thanksgiving morning and lots of people are making connections in ANC to NW, DL or CO to visit family. So we get on the plane, and wait and wait and wait. Eventually flight attendants go down the aisle opening overhead bins and pull out a few bags. So then we wait and wait and wait. Then TSA agents come on the plane and open the overhead bins and pull out a few more bags, including mine. The pilot says over the intercom that upon review of the security tapes, it appears that the TSA let a Leatherman through security and that they're pulling off all the grey bags to rescreen them (my bag is blue, but whatever). So we wait and wait and wait some more. About an hour has passed by now. Well the pilot has a new announcement. Everybody has to get off the plane because the search of all grey (and my blue) bags has yielded nothing. So everybody gets off the plane, and the terminal is evacuated (at this time, there was only one person in the terminal because he had missed my flight). Everybody goes through screening again. It turns out that they never found the Leatherman, but they did find about a dozen people with pocket knives. The truly amusing thing is that the person who was in line before me during the first security screening was a bush pilot with a grey bag, and she was probably well on her way to wherever she was flying with her trusty Leatherman. So we finally leave for ANC about 2 hours late, and half the plane had to be rebooked on a nonstop to Seattle to make other connections to where they were going.

But wait, there's more! So the plane arrives in ANC, the pilot turns off the seatbelt sign and everybody gets up and gets their stuff, except me because I'm on the same plane for the next leg to JNU. A line forms in the aisle, but it's not going anywhere. About 5 minutes later, the pilot has something to say. We had apparently stopped about 1 foot away from where we needed to be, so we need to get the tug back to the plane to pull us forward 1 foot, and everybody needs to take their seats and buckle up again. At this time everybody laughed, because it had been a special morning already.

But wait! There's even more! It was snowing in ANC, not too much, but still a good amount. Everybody boards the plane for JNU, but we aren't ready to leave for about 30 minutes after everybody is onboard and settled down because there were tons of FedEx and UPS packages being loaded for destinations in SE Alaska. So after the 30 minutes or so of waiting for the last of the packages to be loaded, finally we're ready to head out on our way, but this isn't the case. Remember how I said it was snowing in ANC? It snowed quite a bit, and the baggage belt car thing is stuck in the snow. I was seated at the window directly above it, and the driver looked so sheepish as he was trying to back up unsuccessfully. So we sit and wait while they're trying to figure out how to get this thing out of the way so we can leave. The flight is about 3 hours late at this point. So I'm looking out the window and watching the snow and waiting patiently, and all of a sudden I notice that a snow plow is heading towards the plane. Thankfully Alaskans are quite ingenious with our solutions to problems, and the snow plow simply pushes the baggage loader out of the way. We finally get to leave for JNU over 3 hours late! Hooray!

I never did learn the specific reason for this, but years ago on a Mohawk Airlines Martin 404 from PIT-PHL-BOS, during approach to PHL the pilot announced that we would be delayed in Philadelphia while we needed to change aircraft. He actually announced that we couldn't take this plane on to Boston, "the plane's broke." He actually said those exact words! I could picture the pilot sitting in the cockpit madly thumbing through a manual, saying to the copilot, "I don't know, tell 'em it's broke."
Those who want to do something will find a way; those who don't will find an excuse.

Has anybody seen that 'airport' episode where a squirrel runs into a BA flight gear, took a while to get that out. They wouldn't even let passengers on, because "the weight might crush the squirrel if it layed in certain areas"

That's got to be the wierdest reason I've seen, and it was completely true!

The flight is delayed 2 hours because the lock on the cockpit door broke and the inbound pilots could not get out and the outbound pilots cannot get in. The amusing part in one of the pilots stuck in the cockpit had to pee in his cofee cup becuase he couldn't get to the washroom.

January 13th, 2007, DFW: Connecting flight delayed two hours or more while waiting for F/As to arrive from Vail on another flight. The weather was bad and could have gotten worse at any second, so I was lucky my flight wasn't cancelled entirely. However, after two additional hours in layover I was ready to volunteer to give the safety speech and serve drinks myself if it would get us moving.

January 17th, 2007, RNO: Flight initially delayed by an hour due to continuing bad weather at DFW. We board, push off from the gate, taxi to the runway...and sit there. The lights cycle brighter then dimmer a few times, then the pilot announces that the starboard engine refuses to crank. We get pushed back to the gate and a mechanic is called. An hour or so later, the starboard engine finally cranks and we take off.

BMI LHR-Belfast City - delay because there was a bird stuck in the plane that had flown in through an open door

US - PHX - JFK - Delayed because cleaning crew broke a window with a broom (what type of broom???) and I mean just the outer plastic layer and we could not leave for 25 minutes until they found another broom, not because of the window!

US (back then HP) - PHX - PHL - Delayed 30 minutes because someone had checked a Gila Monster

BA - LHR - PHX - Initially delayed 45 minutes because the crew that was on the plane had worked max over time, then the crew they brought on had to be offloaded within 15 minutes because they went over their max time, and then pilots had to be changed. Total delay 3 hours 45 minutes

US (HP) LAX-PHX - a seat in the Emergency Exit row did not have a safety card and they needed to find one - 20 minutes

When I flew LHR - MAA a few years ago, we were delayed a couple of hours (at least) because of a "broken food lift" or something... I remember the passengers joking that they should just CARRY the food up the stairs instead!

As a passenger, I've never had any strange delays, but working flights as a gate agent I've seen some.

1. I was working OH5544 (CMH-JFK) and it cancelled five minutes before departure time because scheduling didn’t schedule a flight attendant for the flight. There was a deadheading flight attendant on the flight who said that she would be happy to work the flight if crew scheduling allowed it, but after she called we found out that there were no pilots to fly the plane. Apparently they had been notified hours in advance that flight was going to cancel due to flight attendant availability, so they were nowhere around.

2. I was working DL1491 (CMH-LAX) which was supposed to be delayed due to late arriving equipment from ATL, but we got the plane turned extremely quickly since there were only about 40 people on the LAX flight. The plane could very well have left early, but was delayed 45 minutes because the ground crew overfilled the fuel tanks.

3. I was called over to assist with an ATL flight after a passenger on the inbound flight started gushing blood from his mouth. It had something to do with his recent dental work, but after the plane landed, his mouth started bleeding. There was blood all over the lavatory and the cabin. The aircraft had to be sanitized and throughly cleaned before it was allowed to depart again. It took about a 40 minute delay.

On a through flight. Delay because there were two very similar black dogs in the cargo hold and the airline couldn't figure out which one was staying and which one was connecting. Took about 45 minutes.

A few years ago on Air Canada Jazz, YVR-YXY.

About an hours delay in YVR, and the only excuse given was "...and as you can see at the moment we do not have an aircraft for this flight" or something like that.

After about an hour an old, tired, dirty, BAe146 showed up at the gate for an 11 minute turnaround and we were off to Whitehorse with flaking paint, worn out seats, broken trays, burnt out cabin lights and practically nothing to eat or drink for 2.5 hours. (I never did figure out how they got people and bags off the inbound flight and us and our bags on the outbound flight in 11 minutes, they did skip the catering but that was still pretty damn fast).

But trying to explain the reason for the delay can be "off", there are numerous reasons the incoming aircraft is late, it could have missed its slot (whilst waiting for late passengers or offloading their bags), a passenger died (either the crew flew home after a few hours delay or another crew were sent out to where-ever), the aircraft has gone tech etc....

I have to say the Canaries (specifically TFS, LPA & ACE) are excellent in dealing with late passengers, if someone has not shown up at the gate they instantly start searching for their bags to minimize the delay should they be left behind. MAN & PMI are also great at this.

My own personal favorite was on the 15 May 2006, whilst working on G-CPEV MAN-CFU the newly resurfaced runway at Corfu Kerkira melted in the heat. Of course we only found this out after we landed  Smile....

Well I had just finished saying goodbye to all the passengers at the L2 door and a captain comes up the stairs, I notice the silver epilettes (ours wore gold), said hello (whilst glancing at his ID, he was from the My Travel A320 which was parked up next to ours) and let him have a word with our Captain who was on his way along from the flightdeck. They had a quick chat and I overhead some of that conversation, and almost collapsed - probably through laughter  Smile As it turns out the runway in Corfu was being resurfaced, now the airport wanted to close the sole runway for a few weeks to get it done in one go but OA wouldn't let them, so they did it in sections. Well y'all can see where this is going, the section which had been done that night melted in the typical Greek heat and as we passed across managed to coat all of the gear in bitumin. Fortunatly though it was the far end of the runway, where we were just backtracking and not the bit in the centre where it could have sprayed up across the fuselage and flaps causing a delay of several days (a shame as I'd never actually stayed in CFU before).

Anyhoo, the entire groundstaff of 6 people went round cleaning the tyres, in the order the aircraft arrived in. Of course the pilots had to speak to operations and check the manuals for the approved cleaning meathods but eventually the 6 guys scrubbed all the tyres on our 757 clean. And during this 4+ hour wait we had no passengers onboard, it was perfect. We all just sat around gossiping, or sunbathing on the side of the aircraft.... That was fun to explain back home I guess, the passengers in CFU understood and saw what the problem was and were happy we were only 2nd to the MYT A320, unlike the norweigen MD83 passengers who really kicked off being 7th!

The irony was, it was all my fault apparently. It turns out when myself and a certain captain fly together we land ourselves a fairly big delay  Smile

I was on a Comair CRJ from IAD to CVG and we were delayed 2 hours becuase the plane was over fueled and the ramp people couldn't figure out how to off load fuel. After 3 tries the ground staff finally came on and asked for 6 people to get off!

almost the same thing appeared to a Air Berlin flight which I handled at the gate in FRA. The pilot fueled his too much and so we had to wait for a fuel-tank truck for almost 2,5 hours. Could you believe that? A world-airport like FRA and no empty fuel-tank truck left. Ok, the common fueling is through the pipeline under the tarmac, but hey, it is not difficult to clear the tank to next flights. anyway... Big grin

I didnt think this was allowed as it would mean possible fuel contamination?

Back when I was a 16yr old punk, homeward bound from a family trip to the Motherland (Italy), we had a 8 hr delay due to the a/c AC 742 was late inbound from YYZ. I did not know any better, but knowing what I know now, the a/c was late due to the 5th engine ferry pod getting installed and instead of direct from VCE to YYZ, we diverted to LHR due to 'crew rest'. Granted, it was the original crew from YYZ on the aircraft, that waited to get the 5th engine installed, but the diversion to LHR1 was not for crew rest, it was to remove the 5th pod for an obvious B742 that was AOG for an engine change. Also note, we didn't know about the diversion to LHR until we were in the air, going north.

Back in 1999 I had a flight on HP from LAS to ORD that was delayed 6-7 hours. Our A320 was several hours late arriving at the gate because it had an MX problem prior to departure. When it finally arrived the crew was over their flight hours so we waited for a new crew to arrive. Finally a couple of pilots arrived but one problem, they were certified to fly the 757! So we wait another hour and a half or so until an A320 crew arrived and we departed at roughly 3:30am Needless to say, I called off work the next day and never booked a flight with HP again.
There's nothing quite like a trijet.

It was on ATA from LAX to HNL on an L-1011 about 7 years ago. Everyone was on board for about 20 mins when the pilot came on and said "We will be delayed for about another 45 minutes due to a missing part in the instrument panel." What the heck is that? What could that possibly be? How can a part just go missing???? Not the best way to comfort the people on board!!

My flight on NW out of MSP to IAD,the flight was delayed for an hour because someone had threw up on one of the seats and the workers had to go change it. Hate to have that job.

Stupid, not strange:

My cousin was supposed to fly into YQQ from YYC on WestJet. The pilots were supposed to hitch a ride on a connecting WS flight from Winnipeg. The plane that was supposed to take them to Calgary was Delayed due to weather in YYZ. So for my cousin's flight to depart, they had to wait for 2 hours for the flight from Toronto to pick up the pilots in YWG, so they could fly to Comox from Calgary!

It was quite an annoying and complcated, yet simple!

Cheers

Agreed.

Crew rest from an overnight by 1hr for US222 to PIT. This was an MD80 service.

Was on an SAS 762 years back, SIN-BKK-CPH... upon closing the door at BKK, the captain went on and regretted the door having been closed because all of a sudden, we had to find a new route and everyone else had already piled onto the remaining route between SE Asia and Europe... reason: Afghanistan closed due to war, Taliban tookover...
Result: 3 hr delay (was about to be 6 if it wasn't for what I was told, juggling with flight altitudes and fuel contingencies).

Mine was about 2 years ago on a MCO-AMS flight on MP...delayed 3 hours because:

1- All lavratories were "OUT OF ORDER"
2- The TVs were not working.
3- The Gate Gourmet people delivered the wrong food
4- One of the flight attentands were stuck in traffic-----------this was occording the gate agent (I find it hard to belive because doesn't the crew come and go together)

Oh and for the lavratories---lol----In the middle of the flight they told us that the toilets were not functioning properly and to ask the flight attendant for apple juice to flush down the toilet!!!!???

Not very strange, but about 2 months ago I was on a BA flight LHR-GVA that was delayed about 40 minutes as the captain was tied up in a major traffic backup on his way to the airport. They managed to find another captain scheduled to operate a later flight which reduced the delay.

I recall another flight a few years ago (forget where but it was a widebody) that was delayed about an hour because the crew bus had been involved in a minor traffic accident on the way to the airport.
