Best Airline Callsigns

Sun Mar 04, 2007 1:03 am

The Title of this thread speaks for itself. Place in your post your favourite callsigns.

I vote:
1) Speedbird (British Airways)
2) Citrus (AirTran)

*Speedbird will probably be voted hundreds of times.  Wink

Cheers

Virgin

In the bizjet arena, try saying: Exec Jet a number of times. The callsign gets jumbled after awhile.

I really like CP's of empress. Even though I prefer AC, I thought Empress was always a good call sign. Now Canadian North uses it I believe.

Edit to add: Come to think of it when we had a CF-18 come and do some low and overs in YLW it was late 2000hrs or so and his call sign was Nightmare ###, it was nice seeing him do some low and overs at night with A/B on. On his departure he did about 5-7 low and overs again.

I'm still a huge fan of Swissair. I was so happy when LX adopted that classic one as their own, it brings back so many memories.

Otherwise, I also like Speedbird (but was even cooler when Concorde was using it), and Springbok.

Wasn't the pre-merger AirTran's callsign "Manatee"?
Best. Callsign. Ever.

(especially if the post-merger AirTran had kept it and eventually bought A380s! "Manatee Super Heavy, cleared for takeoff...")

My favourite was

West Indian by BWIA. But neither the callsign nor the airline exists right now.

It is now Caribbean by Caribbean Airlines.

Flagship - Pinnacle

I was involved in the start up and certification of Dolphin Airways, in Tampa, Fl. back in late 1981. We needed a call sign and I recalled the colorful days of American Airline and their Flagship fleet. We applied for this callsign and it was approved. Dolphin used it through their short life of 1981 to 1984.

In 1985, I was again involved in starting an airline. This time, it was Express Airlines I d/b/a Republic Express in Memphis, Tn and later Minneapolis too. Thinking that the Flagship callsign might still be dormant, we applied to use it and again it was granted.

Republic Express became Northwest Airlink after the Replublic/NWA merger but Express Airlines I remained the certificate holder of this code share regional and the Flagship callsign remained.

Later, NWA acquired and then divested itself of Express Airlines I and the airline became Pinnacle. Although they have changed management and flight crew insignia, the Flagship callsign remains to this day.
