Flights Arriving Before They Left (WN)

Wed Mar 14, 2007 2:31 pm

Hi,

I was looking for basketball charters, when I ran across WN 50:

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/SWA50

Schedule for the ELP-PHX segment:

Scheduled departure: 12:15AM MDT
Scheduled arrival: 12:10AM MST

All thanks to, I know, Arizona's non-observance of daylight saving time  Wink

Anyone else know of any flights that arrive before they depart Big grin

Also, I thought WN didn't do redeyes...I thought all their birds turned to pumpkins after midnight  Wink Or has this changed recently?

All flights from Asia to N. America arrive before they left. Every time I go home, flight takes off from ICN at around 4:00 pm and arrives at SFO around 9 am same day. Talk of weird. Going back though, you depart SFO around noon and get to ICN at 5 pm the next day.

further research into SWA50 would show that normal departure out of ELP is 855pm with a 910pm arrival into PHX. for some reason in DAL, the flight took on flightaware shows a pretty heavy delay in DAL, but interesting enough, not on the SWA webpage which shows a minimal to zero delay, hhhmmmm......

You could have lunch in London and breakfast in New York when the Concorde was around.... now THAT's cool!

Also, flights from Northern France and Belgium to Southern UK / LON would probably arrive before they left in many cases...

In the 70s, I had a customer who had regular cargo shipments to London (from HAM). Flight details was usually etd 07:00 eta 07:30 and he was curious why it took only 30 minutes, We told him it's a Concorde flight, which he bought. He paid good rates as well.

Air Midwest has a flight from CDC to LAS which goes back in time - it's only a 50 minute flight (approx 200 miles) that goes back 1 time zone.

WN has a flight from MAF to ABQ which goes back in time by 10 minutes too. Anything that's a quick jump over a time zone has that potential. Wouldn't a DTW-ORD flight be less than an hour? Perhaps a SLC-RNO would go back in time as well. Depending on the time of year (since Indiana doesn't observe DST) CVG-IND. Also, ATL-BHM comes to mind as another flight that would go back in time.

SYD/MEL/AKL/BNE to LAX/SFO leave about an hour after they arrive. SYD/MEL/AKL-HNL arrive like 7 hours or so before they leave.

Most DTW-ORD Flights take just just a few minutes as well thanks to the time change... Big grin

Though not operating anymore, AF & BA Concorde used to arrive in JFK "before" they left CDG or LHR ... :

All flights from TLL and HEL to ARN are arriving 5 min. before they departed. Pretty nice, especially when you have early morning meeting at Stockholm Big grin

Indiana now observes DST. But, this makes for about 10-15 minute flights from IND-ORD, assuming no delays of course.

Even better than all of these is CO 2 (actually CS 2) from GUM to HNL; it departs GUM at 0600 and arrives HNL at 1705 the previous day.

There was bad weather in Dallas yesterday.

Here's a flight that goes back in time that is not a result of DST. ATL-VPS flights are very close to the timezone line and very short, so they regularly arrive before they depart.

What would be cool about this is that if you were flying this route at the right time you would see the sun rise in the West because the Concorde traveled faster than the solar terminator.

CLE-MDW used to be one hour gate-to-gate, crossing a time zone.....

So the flight would arrive at the SAME time it departed.

Depart CLE 5:00pm
Arrive MDW 5:00pm
The opinions expressed are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of Southwest Airlines.

yeah, basically O'Hare east to a good 250 miles or so, depending on "delays" the arrivals are before the departures.

Indianapolis to St. Louis (American Connection) is often an arrival before scheduled

Louisville to St. Louis (Southwest) is 1 hr. 5 minutes but often pulls in ahead of schedule making it fall under this category

Back in the 90's I used to do a lot of ATL-BNA flights on DL. With a flying time of around 30 mins, you would always find yourself in BNA well before you left ATL.

It comes to my mind quite often. 55 minutes gate to gate, so you're spot on.

Today DL 819 (ATL-TUS) arrived 4 minutes after it left (flight time). I think this could be the longest US domestic flight that could arrive before it left, the pilots just need to go a little faster. Both airports are close to the timezone lines.

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/DAL819

During DST, DFW-TUS/PHX flights regularly arrive before leaving.

Actually, MAJ-HNL on CO 956 (CS 956) arrives 17 hours and 30 minutes before it departs, but it departs MAJ at 2000 so the arrival in HNL is on the same day at 0230.

I did find an even better one; on Wednesdays, FJ flies CXI (Christmas/Kiritimati Island) to HNLwith a flight at departs at 0730 and arrives at 1035 the previous morning. Similarly, FJ's NAN-APW flights arrive 21 hours and 10 (or 11) minutes before they depart, but they are actually scheduled for same-day arrival. FJ's non-stops to HNL and LAX also all arrive well before they depart, but they all depart in the late evening so the arrivals are still same-day.

Yes, but you would have to travel at many time light-speed to get to it Wink

Almost all of the AMS-NWI, -LCY, -LHR, BHX -CWL and BRS flight arrive a few minute before they left, and the Rotterdam-LHR/LCY flights certainly do!
