Best Way To Get A Job In Aviation?

Tue Mar 20, 2007 6:00 am

Seeing as my last attempt at a first post got deleted (perhaps the title was too vague?), I will try this again!  Silly

I'm very interested in pursuing a career in the aviation industry, as either a commercial pilot or as a worker on the more business side of things for either a commercial airline or an airport. So I have a couple of questions (and with your answers, keep in mind I'm currently living in Canada and am most likely not willing to leave North America to get a post-secondary education).

1. What is the best route to take to become a commercial airline pilot? Also, I have naturally poor vision (I use glasses)...would this be an issue in pursuing a career as a pilot?
2. What's the best way to get a job in the business side of the aviation industry (ex. as an analyst, marketer, operational junkie, etc)? Should I look to get an aviation related degree, or just a general business degree?
3. Does anybody have any knowledge about Western's Bachelor of Management and Organizational Studies majoring in Aviation? I've read through the website and the print magazine and it seems like a good program, preparing you well for a career as either a pilot or a businessman in aviation, and it's pretty close to home! Big grin I was just wondering if it's a credible program from the viewpoint of airlines or airports when hiring employees?

Hi Pacifica!

Give also a shot at ATC trainings. I have no idea how it works in Canada (although if I had the chance to leave here to work in another country Canada would probably be my choice) but here in France the access is relatively easy since the job is not as high-profile as pilot so a lot of people are unaware of the advantages. You get the best of two worlds, working on an airport or in a center, and the pay is quite good with a great deal of time off to spend it.

(does it work? I have to practice my promotionnal speech since I will probably present the cursus at Le Bourget airshow in June!)

I believe that in the USA you can actually learn to fly even though you wear glasses. I think that in Europe though the rules are different

There's flying and then there's flying
