Seeing in person did not change my mind at all. I thought it was very fat looking but still very impressive. The 744 looks better overall though.

Welcome to A.net  wave

I wasnt there, but i can say ive seen it so many time and heard so much news about it ive come to the following conclusions:

- the 747 is still the queen of the skies.
- its a great looking engeneering achievement.
- they brought it to the US to mark there territory, and they did.
- Airbus did this to basically one-up Boeing for PR.
- to the non-aviation enthusiast, it looks like any other tube of aluminum.
- it is 2 1/2 years late and counting.
- Airlines have cancelled orders and will continue to.
- It will not make a profit and bring Airbus out of the hole they are in.
- It will be short lived once it enters service because the world will have already moved onto better things like the 787/777/747-8I (id put the A350 in there, but im not convinced airbus will have the money to do it once the A380 catches up with them.)

- its a flop

I think it looks like a Nimrod on steroids. You can put makeup on a pig, but in the end it still is a pig with makeup on.

Welcome Virgin747LGW  wave

I have not been up close and personal with the A380, but I see it as a remarkable feat of engineering.........Those that slate it are perhaps blinkered by the aesthetics of it, my feelings are it goes way beyond that. It is the most impressive machine I have seen in my lifetime, and who knows, maybe one day I will get to board it...........

Who cares if it looks ugly?
Its a hell of a lot better an airplane than the 747, no matter what you try and say.

A Ford Mustang may look like a nice car, but its actually an old bus below the outer skin, it sucks.

Thanks

Welcome to A.net

cheers guys!

I saw the A380 at Farnborough 06, and although it comes nowhere near the A330 or 787 in terms of looks who thought a double decker plane was gonna look sleek and sexy? presummably people said the same things about the 747 when she was being developed and know look at peoples views of her. airlines and passengers dont care about what the plane looks like. BTW it does have a very beautiful wing.

Of course it is, how could anything which has already gained well over 150 orders be anything utter than a complete and utter failure. Seriously, support Boeing, but please remove your head from your ass before doing so, at least then you may see some common sense.

The A380 is not exactly the most beautiful aircraft ever built, and it is late, but I think it's still an excellent achievement. More environmentally friendly than it's predecessors and quieter, which has to be the way forwards for aviation. I look forwards to flying in it! Big grin

..and yes, welcome to A.net Virgin747LGW!

Maybe its cos after years of american companies promoting VLAs and getting nowhere, Airbus comes along and produces something that major blue chip airlines like?

I see where you are coming from, and i didnt mean to be that extreme. sorry..but on the other hand, they are in debt, and the airlines arent exactley happy with the delay...and 150 as a starting point for orders was much lower than they were expecting.

Likewise, it was a little amiss of me to phrase it like that, my apologies... using A.net as a way to de-stress from coursework doesn't always work silly  I think it may well see a few more orders this year, probably be up to the 200 mark by 08, but they do indeed have a fair way to go yet!.

The Toulouse Goose a poorly-planned failure. I'm not at all comfortable with its jury-rigged wiring. I wouldn't be surprised if they become maintenance hogs.

Actually, the new models (2005+) share very little with earlier models, the old fox platform is now gone so it is a much better car (handling wise) than it used to be.

Uh, ok ...

Unlikely, it turns more heads then most other aircraft out there.

Do you have insider information that we mortals don't have? How do you know this?

Makes no sense, but if that's your opinion.

As is your post ...

I haven't seen it myself, but it doesn't look as graceful as the 747, looks almost like a An124 or C5 to me, with the exception of the wings of course. Will have to wait and see one up close first.

my impression of it?

wwwwwwhhhhhhooooooooooooooooosssssssssssssssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
rrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

how was that?

in all seriousness, i think a plane like that will have some dificulties in operation, due to that many people, but it is quite an achievement.

just like in jurassic park, they were so hung up on whether or not they could do it, they never thought to see if they should do it.

i think the A380 will be a success, its starting slow but so does paula radcliff. boeing are winning but it wouldnt surprise me if there was a reversal in hte next 10 years, everyone has ups and downs.

I can't really do an A380 impression; my arms don't do the wingspan justice!

In all seriousness, though, for such a large bird I was pleasantly surprised to see how graceful she looks in flight. (Of course I've only seen it on the tube, not in real life yet...and I'm not likely to see it in Bermuda anytime soon!!)

I took my family to the airport in Sydney when the
A380 was here a year or so ago, it had Qantas titles but the Airbus Tail logo.
I was impressed by the size of it although I admit I don't find it pretty. My wife though, who see's everything smaller than a 747 as a "shuttle" was Awe Struck. She has no idea about Aircraft and said that was the biggest 747 she had ever seen! She is American, comes from Ohio, and wouldn't believe me when I told her it wasn't made in America.
I remember when the DC-3 was new!

I think its a big waste of money. One of the bigges turn offs for me is the fact that the airports that will serve it have to redo taxiways and runways as well as rebuild or expand terminals. That's alot of money to be spent for a single aircraft. Airbus is definately killing themselves right now with the delays and all the money spent on it and we have yet to see a single one ran commercially. Does anyone think that if we see a serious accident, God forbid we don't, they will stop production with the amount of lives lost?

Long live the 747.

You know i was there at LAX when the a380 came in at 9:30AM my impression , i don't even want to tell my thoughts on the aircraft. All i have to say is i can't believe i missed school for this. Yeah the airbus a380 has it's size over the queen of the skies(Boeing 747) but what happen to the looks. Can't wait for the 748.
