Probably the 10 abreast rear cabin... you'd be better off seating further forward in the 9 abreast Economy section...
I do enjoy a spot of flying, especially when it's not in economy!

The first third of the cabin, rows 21-29, has 9-breast seating so I would go there if possible. You can click the picture larger:
Big version: Width: 953 Height: 238 File size: 58kb
AY MD-11: C 36 seats/ Y 246 seats

Apparently depends on your booking class. I was booked in X class and only the 10-abreast section appeared when selecting a seat (on Amadeus). However, when I made a test booking in Y, of course the full cabin became available. Don't know if these rules still apply at check-in, maybe just try by asking to be seated in rows 21-29.

I have noticed they usually are flexible at check-in, if there are free seat. I only have flown the HEL-BKK in route in Y though, many package holiday makers there and they are pre-seated in back.

How come they have the 9 abreast section? Did the whole cabin used to be 9 abreast or what? Are the seats in the 9 abreast wider or just wide aisles?

The seating system is mystery to me... the seats in front are wider, the seat pitch is the same 32".
Perhaps to seating system comes from the history: AY used MD-11 for holiday charter flights a lot, I have flown it to Gran Canaries, even to Stansted, and still there are lot package holiday makers flying ot BKK on MD-11.
Well, their MD-11s are history by 2010 anyway, Airbus widebodies have normal seating.

I've flown to PVG in the 59th row, window and aisle as it was myself and my partner, and it was fine.
