Old Vs. New Livery Comparison

Fri Mar 30, 2007 9:15 am

It's been some time since I've checked the Polls & Preference Section; so, hopefully, this hasn't been done in a while. Since there's been a few livery changes in recent years; I'd thought I'd post a picture comparison poll.

This comparison only involves standard/base airline liveries (no special, retro themes, hybrids, etc.) that underwent a change within the last 10 years (which rules AA, AS & CO out). For sake of simplicity, since I realize a few carriers changed their scheme a couple of times in a 10-year timespan; I will only include the most-recent change. Only current carriers are shown.

Where possible, comparison photos with the same/similar aircraft type will be shown.

ok, here's my thoughts on those airlines w/ my opinions on it:

Aeromexico - old (but i do like the tail of the new)
Air Canada - new (more vivid colors)
AirTran - old (just can't stand how the red/teal stripe doesn't flow w/ the beginning of the tail)
ATA - New (very sharp)
Delta - New (what can i say...i like my Deltaflot's wavy gravy!)
Frontier - both (i like the green engine color but the old style "Frontier" name, not a fan of the billboard style either)
Hawaiian - NEW (HANDS DOWN!)
Japan - old (i'm reallying missing the crane and the asian looking "JAL")
Midwest - New (again, very sharp)
Northwest - both (love the silver/metallic look but i much prefer the NW logo on the old tail)
Spirit - old (too dark feeling for me for the new colors)
Southwest - new (not a southwest fan BUT...the canyon blue does give it a distinct look)
Sun Country - new
United - new (tho...i really wish they had a colored "U" tulip rather than the white/blue hybrid)
US Airways - new (the old one was too corporate feel and dark)

RE: Old Vs. New Livery Comparison

AM: New. Bare metal has never done it for me. Only AA successfully pulls it off in my opinion, and even then I'm not in love with it.

AC: Hmmm... Eurowhite with a black tail vs. Eurowhite with a white tail with green dots. Yawn. I'll vote Old in this case, at least there was more contrast with the black tail.

FL: In the case of the 717 specifically: Old. I'm split on AirTran's liveries, though. I absolutely love the new scheme on the 73G. I hated the old livery on the Ryan A320s, I thought they looked terrible. But in the case of the 717, I just can't get used to a blue BR715. And I hate how the cheatlines curve up at the nose. It makes my favorite plane look like a duck! I've always suspected that when AirTran was looking at artists' renderings of possible new liveries, all they saw were pictures of 737s and after they picked the current 737 livery, somebody remembered "Hey, what about the 717 fleet?" to which the artist replied "Aw, crap, we gotta paint those too? Well, we'll just make it fit on the 717. What's the worst that could happen?"

ATA: New. It looks more professional without being too stuffy. And I really like blue and gold together.

DL: New. I like the tail especially. The older one was just boring and uninspired. It looked like most 1990s "we gotta update our '70s look" quickie updates... a desperate attempt to look "modern" by people who were stuck in the Orange Shag Carpet Era.

F9: New. The "handwritten logo" thing is so over.

HA: New. They actually bothered to take the engine into consideration when designing the tail art. And the whole thing just looks more "Hawaiian" than the old paint.

JAL: No preference. The registry on the wing is kind of cool, but you can't see that part of the wing on the "old" picture so it might or might not be on the old livery. I like the logo on the tail of the old paint.

Midwest: New. The colors may be the same but I like the tail logo on the new scheme better. And again, they bothered to paint the engine (although there's that blue BR715 again... at least the rest of the plane matches it!)

NW: Old. The old Northwest livery may have been nothing special, but the current Northwest paint is my absolute least favorite livery ever! It's hideous! "Let's just paint the whole thing gray." Blah. It looks like a galvanized bucket.

Spirit: Old. For exactly the same reasons as Northwest. Galvanized gray bucket with splashes of darker gray and black paint. Ugh!

WN: New. I really like the Canyon Blue. I also like how they kept the gold but used it to separate the blue, red, and orange. The new paint is also glossier than the old. I like my walls flat but my planes glossy  Smile

Sun Country: New. Is it just me, or does that 727 look like a Dr. Pepper ad from 1983?

UA: New. That old gray looked stuffy and corporate, especially with the uniform blue lines on the tail and the Times New Roman font. The giant tulip on the new tail is a nice touch... great new use for a classic logo.

US: New. The old paint looked like a United plane flying upside-down. And it was my least favorite shade of blue. I'm not in love with the tail on the new livery but the rest of the plane looks great.

Aeromexico - New (Not a fan or Bare-Metal)

Air Canada - Old (Simple, Classic. Maple Leaf stands out more....I LOVE that they used DARK Green!!)

AirTran - New (Beige=Blah. Blue better than green)

ATA - New (Old was too busy)

Delta - New (1997 colors were awful....wavy gravy is great.....but where's the WIDGET!!)

Frontier - Old (Better reflects Frontier's fun personality, in my opinion)

Hawaiian - New (This one is tough. The new Pualani is Awesome, but I really miss the splashes of coloe ont he fuselage...atleast the tail is more colorful)

Japan - New (More modern, very reflective of Japan. Looks clean, simple & elegant)

Midwest - New (not old looking)

Northwest - New (original, distinctive, but truly Northwest....unless you are looking at the right side  Wink )

Spirit - Old (New one looks black and white....no colorful punch like the blue has)

Southwest - New (Bright, fun, primary colors....yet true to the classic Southwest look)

Sun Country - Old (New is WAY too busy. And there isn't enough Yellow/Orange around)

United - New (Clean, modern, beautiful.....but I long for a thin Red & Orange stripe)

US Airways - New (Seems, lighter and less "slow" than the old. Great combo of America West and US Airways)

Aeromexico - New
Air Canada - New, but the old looks good
AirTran - Both; the new one grew on me, but I still love those old colors!
ATA - Old

Frontier - New, but I did like that script font!
Hawaiian - New! Good grief, those old colors make me spew!
Japan Airlines - Both, but the old one looks good too
Midwest - New, but I do like the old scheme
Northwest - Old. This new crap is a disgrace compared to the classy bowling shoe livery!
Spirit - Old. Grayscale is for  grumpy   old  gits like some users here...  duck
Southwest -New, but I like the old one on the -300
Sun Country - New
United - Old, but new on certain aircraft, the 747 not being one of them
US Airways -New
Avianca- New; a classic example of classics I hate
KLM- Old
TAP- Old
Lan- New
Alitalia- Old, but in a way, the new livery is basically the same as the old one only lower and different shades
Asiana- New except for that stupid arrow! BRING BACK THE DANCER!

For the new batch:

Avianca: New
KLM: New, I guess, but they're hardly different. Old looks good too.
TAP: New
LAN: Indifferent. I like how the blue/white border is curved at the back now and not just a straight line, but the new one doesn't have enough blue on it.
Alitalia: New, although I think I like the old cheatline more. But the biggest different, extending the "A" further down on the fuselage, is a nice improvement.
Asiana: New. I hated the old one. But I don't really like the front half of the new one. I love the new tail though.

Avianca - New, no doubt

KLM - Once again, no contest, new

TAP - New ones are a bit odd, but brighter than the old one

LAN - new

Alitalia - Old. Those minor changes really make all the difference

Asiana - Old, though, I must say, the new colors are growing on me.

Personally, if FL had to change their scheme; they should've done what US did with their Eagles' plane.

Just take off the Eagles' logo & titles; paint the engine cowlings green/teal, add a small red & blue stripe between the white & green, apply the a to the tail and (Emeril voice) BAM!, you have a new c/s for FL.

Thank you for all your responses.

Thread-Starters' Choices (I also included the additional comparison entries):

AeroMexico- Old (hands down)
Air Canada- New (slight favor)
AirTran- Old (would've been a tie had the new livery scheme layout resembled more like US' Eagles plane and the engine cowlings were painted teal)
Alitalia- Tie
Asiana- Old
ATA- New
Avianca- Old (tail on new c/s looks like it was taken from a '60s-era NBC peacock)
Delta- New (slight on most Boeings, hands down on the 727s & Mad Dogs)
Frontier- Tie
Hawaiian- New (slight favor)
JAL- Old (hands down; revive the crane)
KLM- Old (slight favor)
LAN- Old
Midwest- New (hands down, old logo looked like a GE rip-off)
Northwest- Old (hands down)
Spirit- Old (slight favor, new scheme will get lost among other DTW metal Big grin )
Southwest- Old (hands down, the new canyon blue clashes too much. IMHO, the new c/s should've been what's now used on the Herb Kelleher, Colleen Bartlett & Gary Kelly(?) planes)
Sun Country- New (slight favor)
TAP- Old (hands down)
Thai- Tie (no pun intended  Silly )
United- New (slight favor, should've added an orange stripe to divide the white & blue)
UPS- Old (slight favor)
US Airways- New (old looked good when it was fresh, but faded and peeled prematurely (take a look at many of the o/c 737s over at PHL))

Frontier - New

Sun Country - New
United - New (Really didn't like it when it came out, but I now think it looks pretty classy - especially the tail.)

Second set:
Avianca - New

Generally, I prefer the 'less is more' trend airlines are going for these days to reduce painting costs.
