Places To Stay, Things To Do- St. Maarten

Mon Apr 09, 2007 12:29 pm

Hey everyone,
Im currently planning a trip to St. Maarten sometime in the summer and had a few basic questions.
1) Whats a good place to stay, how about the Sonesta?
2) Whats to see and do (besides sit on Maho beach)
3) Any good restaurants?
4) Best time to go (summer)

And anything else anyone wants to add in would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

Is that the one next to Maho Beach? If it is then yes that one!

I was gonna say, Sit on Maho Beach!  Wink  drool

I would think so, but I've never been.

Sonesta would be your best option. Very central, good facilities, a good casino, and if you can get an airport view room, unlimited plane spotting. I stayed there and could recommend it to you....

Rent a car and drive around the island. Spectacular views. Go to the Dutch capital Phillipsburg. Nice little town with good shopping (esp. electronics as its a duty free island), an open air market and plenty of restaurants to choose from. Though, you would spend most of your time at Maho Beach and Sunset Bar where it's all happening. There is a good night club in the same building as Sonesta's casino and even a better open air one at the Cervansarai Hotel right next to Sunset Bar.

Lots to choose from in Maho. Can't remember the name but there was a very good fish restaurant adjacent to Sonesta Hotel. Best restaurants are at the French capital which actually has a real French feeling. The Dutch side is American. Even the locals do not speak Ducth (I met a local taxi driver and he couldn't speak Dutch and he told me many people couldn't) but in the French part they strictly speak French. If you want better quality food then you should head to Marigot.

4) Best time to go (summer)

Best time to go to SXM would be the drier season which runs from December to May. Outside these months, it's officially the hurricane season. Though most likely you would only want to avoid September-November period.

I stayed at the Caravanserai which is right behind the Sunset Beach Bar. Nice room, had a full size kitchen, was clean and comfortable and best of all, walking distance to Maho. We got the airfare, transfers and hotel from travelbyjen for $599 a person from BDL on UA. I was under the impression the Caravanserai was going to be demolished to make room for a new hotel / timeshare, so I think it is still there! Every morning, we got breakfast at the Sunset Beach Bar, an omelette, bacon/sausage, juice and toast was $5 a person.

Best place to rent a car, AAA Car Rental via sxmreservations.com. I paid $216 for a week in a Mitsubishi Spacewagon (there were 5 of us), so expect a lot less for a Corolla or Picanto Don't worry, they all have dents and don't lock the doors or keep your valuables in it.

Here is a great guide to the restaurants, there are a lot to choose from! I enjoyed Pineapple Pete, The Boathouse and Carlo @ Bella Napoli.

Happy travels!

Believe it or not, more to do in St. Maarten than sit on Maho Beach for your entire stay. Turkishwings offers very good advice, heck tell your parents to open up the charge cards and go wild.
