What Are Some Intresting Airport You Seen?

Sat May 05, 2007 5:56 am

In reacent years I done a good amout of traveling,(mostly by ships of corse) and I have seen some intresting airports.

HNL: There flight path. You land flying over the opening of Pear Harber and take off and climb in front of WIKIK beach.
SIN: This busy airport is in the middle of the jugle. By the way, Singapore is a great place to visit. I really like my visit there.
SEA: I was shock to find out that Boeing Renton plant was on SEA land.
SAN: Any major airports with one runway for take off and landing has to be intresting.

These are example of mine, what about yours?

SXM - A spotter's paradise Wink
KOA - The terminal is outside, there are just little huts for gift shops, etc.

FRA - You're alowd to smoke in the terminal. This just seems unusual to me because I'm used to smoking being so restricted to certain places (outside) here in Canada.

AIT and USM come to mind. USM is particularly "cute", though I much preferred AIT.

You're still allowed to smoke in FRA? Do the Fraport people still think that cig smoke follows invisible walls near the "smoking areas"?

Interesting is a word I'd use to describe the management of the airport, given that the more appropriate terms are probably not permitted in polite conversation.

MAD, the new Terminal 4 is simply fantastic, as an architecture student it is quite an inspiration as to what can be done with large public/private projects.

VEY, Westmann Islands, Iceland. The airport seems to take up about half the island's length, which I think it does actually, and the approaches from the North and East are amazing, taking you past some very impressive peaks.

FAE, Vagar, Faroe Islands. A steep approach is necessary because of the local topography, which means you slide gently down to the runway with the hills high above you on either side. Seemed a short enough runway for the RJ100, let alone a 737 which they also operate on charters!

JTR - It's so cool to see the mix of OA ATR's, the charter airlines that use 737 or even bigger, and the military planes that remain completely hidden under dirt bunkers until select times (i.e. when a Turkish plane strays too close).

ABE - Their approach and departure paths are a mess. As I stated in another thread, I saw them use three different directions for take-off and landing in a 20 minute period. And it wasn't like, "Ok, the wind changed, let's switch runways." They just sent/accepted planes in/from whatever direction without the wind changing and with no pattern whatsoever. It's crazy. You can't place yourself at a threshold for underneath shots, because chances are you'll be in the wrong spot for half the flights.

MCO - I love the airport's layout. The satellites linked with the rail system are so cool, and from above the airport just looks really slick.

I study Landscape Architecture - which is a brace of architecture, mixed with a good deal of planting and landscaping. Great excuse for going outside and laying in a field all day - all on the basis of getting a feel for the environment Big grin

TEX is pretty sweet, especially landing in a B1900, as you can see out the front.

A REALLY nice approach into SDU and then a great view of it from Sugar Loaf.

A night approach into CGH over what looked like an endless sea of buildings and then suddenly a rapidly rising red/white checkerboard cliff and then instant piano keys!!

A flat approach into AVX due to a uphill runway.

TGI in the middle of Chesapeake Bay.

I had to spiral my way out of AKL as it is in a valley surrounded by mountains.

There is a spell-checker, you know...

DEN: many runways, mountains close by
HNL: open terminal (as well as other HI airports)
MXP: mountains close by
CDG: takes forever to get to the other terminals/concourses due to lack of interest by bus drivers; not enough jetways; dirty (2B especially)

Interesting.

MCI: Walk off the plane, and you're at the main airport doors!
YEC: VERY small terminal, like the size of two houses
DTW: Awesome terminal on one end, piece of crap on the other
DEN: Just plain BIG!

DUS was quite interesting during the summer on 1996, just after the fire destroyed the terminal. They had a bunch of beer tents out on the tarmac being used as make shift terminals. Nothing says "Welcome to Germany" then going throught passport control in a beer tent .....  Silly

Many airports in Germany still have smoking areas and many are equipped with ventilators built into the ashtrays. YVR still has smoking rooms as well.

The highway strips in Finland a pretty neat. Driving along and all of a sudden the 2 lane road turns into a runway. Cool. I wish I had taken photos of these things.

Ashtrays? I get this amusing picture of people smoking by pushing their faces into the ashtray.

I remember those smoking areas from when I was there (FRA) in 2003. It seemed like someone in charge was trying to taunt the anti-smoking lobby: "They want segregated smoking areas, fine, we'll give them segregated smoking areas.  hissyfit "

I find MDW to be alot of fun. Buzzing people's houses, cars, and businesses, on the way down to the runway. Brake like hell once you hit because that runway is short for a loaded 737

The airport at MAJ is very cool (it was at the time). Think hut. Also YAP too. Literally a hut. We did a lot of flying out in Micronesia. All of them (save GUM) were literally huts. At MAJ, the immigration officer, at the time, was also the refueler. At least my passport smelled like jet fuel.

That's a strike against FRA in my opinion, though I enjoyed sitting in McDonald's and watching the traffic.

I like NBO. Once, on a very clear day, I saw Mt. Kenya and Mt. Kilimanjaro from the 5th floor restaurant walkway.

KUL for the architecture
LCY - runway on what looks like an old quayside
THF - the original, and best. Also weird walking out of the terminal straight into the city centre.
