DUB-NYC, Which Airline?

Sun May 06, 2007 10:15 pm

Hi all, I am planning to fly DUB-NYC at the start of December and have a range of different options. Im flying economy and most routings are a similar price but have only flown certain airlines and certain aircraft so any help is appreciated

CO 757 direct (cheapest option at only e350 but worried about the small aircraft)
DL 767 via SNN (flown DL, dont really want to again and one of the most expensive options)
EI 330 direct (flown EI to JFK before and no complaints, may even get a new aircraft)
BA 747 / 777 via LHR (never flown L/H with BA)
AA 777 via LHR (flown this route before with AA 777s, not bad experience but heard rumours they were going downhill)
VS 747 via LHR (never flown VS before)
KL 747 / 330 via AMS (never flown KL before)
AF 747 / 777 via CDG (never flown AF before)
US 757 via PHL (a cheap option but again on a 757)

Thanks for your help

I have friends in Dublin and I know they make that trip perhaps once every 18mths. They always fly with AI and in conversations over time they wouldn't choose any other Airline. Like you, they have no complaints, and feel very comfortable with them. I think if I had the option I would probably do the same.

Judging by your name, you should take EI.

Quoting EIRules (Thread starter):

Size is relative. If you used to 737s, it's a bigger plane (and so on). Worried about safety, CO's 757s have a spotless record.

Based on your info, CO is your best bet (money wise). EI and CO are the ones that go non-stop. Aside from choosing them, you can enjoy a stop somewhere.

Best of luck with your decision and have a great trip regardless.

I would go for the CO non-stop if it is the cheapest option. I have flown EWR-BRS and back on a CO 757, and was no less comfortable in economy class on the "little" 757 than I was on the various widebodies on which I have flown from the US to London.

As an Aer Lingus fan myself as you well know EIRules, I would go with EI. They have some great fares and you may get a chance to fly one of the new aircraft with the new product but you have been on EI before and CO might be a nice change!

To keep up with Irish aviation thread tradition...will you do a TR?

I'd try the Virgin route - fly bmi DUB-LHR then VS LHR-EWR/JFK. A buddy did that when we went to NYC in March.

Lots of VS routes during the day, and lots of DUB-LHR routes too.

You can even configure your route to have a 744 one way and a 346 back, or vice versa.

I take it that the Delta non-stop as well as the CO B762 are seasonal.

If I were you, I'd probably take CO's 757. But EI is also a good choice, especially if you want a widebody. I try to avoid stops if I can just for convenience' sake.

Yeah the CO 762s end at the end of Sept. Have flown on one of them to EWR before and it was a pleasure. I really like CO but just a bit nervous about the 757 (my most unfavourite aircraft) and the lack of PTVs on CO 757s. But they are installing PTVs at the moment so maybe I'll get an aircraft with them by then

What makes you nervous about the 757? Clausterphobic feeling? It's a perfectly safe aircraft.

I think he's nervous that he wouldn't enjoy the flight, not that any incidents would happen. Not sure why he doesn't like the 757 though, but since he does that would make him nervous about not enjoying a flight on one.

Well it depends where yu want to go in NYC. Do you want to go to New Jersey, or New York or the city itself? Go for the direct option then. If it doesn't matter, go with EI. Bigger plane, excellet legroom, seats are comfortable enough, you may get a new plane, direct, good service, good staff and a good price. Lor d knows they could use the extra bums on seats, what with Load Factor dropping recently.

All excellent reasons EISHN and as an EI fan myself I would be very tempted to agree. Except they are over e200 dearer than CO. Its cheaper to fly BA!!

OK, I'm going to play Devil's advocate here:

I'm an EI fan, obvious by my username BUT CASH is CASH and every penny saved is a penny earned.

If I were you I'd take CO. AFter all they're the cheapest and you can get FF miles. Plus CO has the best service of any US based carrier, not as good as Aer Lingus I'll grant you but really its only a seven hour ish flight and the 757 isn't THAT bad.

Just take CO or EI (at a push). DOn't even consider BA. LHR is totally not worth the hassle and It always aggitates me to know that I'm flying in the wrong direction i.e Eastwards to LHR just to connect to fly back westwards.

My two cents.

Either way have a ball!

One thing to note - CO is adding AVOD PTVs to the Y cabin of their 757 fleet, so by December, chances are pretty good that your aircraft would be retrofitted by that point.

One thing you could do, is check the configuration of the aircraft, while booking. If it has 298 seats in Y, its the new A330-300, if it has 303, then its the older ones.
If it has 251 Y seats, then its the older A330-200, but if it has 248, it'll be the new A330-200.
So you could get the new A330s, with new seats and AVOD. The PTVs will be a good bit bigger than on CO, with the EI ones will be 8.4", as oppsed to 5/6" on CO.

Personally I'd go with VS if you can schedule a 744 one way and an A346 the other. Second choice would be EI. I would try to avoid the 757's if possible. Not for safety reasons, but there is nothing exciting about flying this monotonous narrow-body over the pond.
There's nothing quite like a trijet.

I'd fly CO.

I definitely wouldn't connect through Heathrow -- it's a giant pain in the rear. Besides, your total time will be almost double door-to-door.

I would definitely choose CO, e350 sounds like a bargain to me. Besides the 757 is a great aircraft - even better when fitted with winglets as CO's are. It's one of those aircraft we'll all miss when they're gone - er in twenty years or so !
