Best Prem. Economy Class From USA To LHR?

Mon May 07, 2007 7:46 am

Right now, I'm thinking about taking a family trip to London later this summer. Last time we went to London back in 2001, we flew VS from ORD-LHR in economy, where college students were getting drunk and no one could get sleep. Becuase of that, my mom said that she would never fly trans-atlantic in steerage again, so we're looking at a premium economy class this time around (again, from ORD-LHR) becuase my mom doesn't want Y, but my dad doesn't want to pay the extra money for business class.

The choices here are BA World Traveler Plus and VS Premium Economy. (UA's Economy Plus doesn't count for us since it's just regular old UA economy with extra legroom). I saw web descriptions of both carriers' products, and both of them look nice. It's a tossup, so it's up to you folks... which one does the a.net community think is better? We might make a decision within the next two weeks, so timing is everything.

I don't know about VS' premium economy service, but I flew BA WT+ last year MEX-LHR-MEX and I must tell you it was fantastic. On the outbound leg, the WT+ cabin had 100% load and, yet, everyone was very comfortable. On the return leg, it was even better because the load was around 50%; moreover, one of the flight attendants really gave me premium treatment; she was extra-kind and made sure that I never needed anything. In addition, she had memorized the last names of the passengers that she was assigned to, like in business or first, and I thought that was a very classy touch.

On a less subjective note, WT+ is great because you can leave your seat without having your rowmate(s) get up from theirs. Pitch and width are really generous.

In my case, the cost of WT+ was like U.S.$300-350 over the cheapest economy fare that I was able to find, so I thought that the cost-benefit ratio was really outstanding. I did not hesitate to pay for it and I certainly did not regret it. So, go ahead and try BA's WT+. I am sure you and your family will enjoy the experience!

I would kinda disagree with EddieDude. I've experienced both products and I would say that VS's product is better than BA's. My reasons:

1. VS has dedicated check-in for Premium Economy. (BA doesn't)
2. VS has priority boarding for Premium Economy. (BA doesn't)
3. I found the service was more friendly and attentive on the VS product. BA's was just like any other Y product's.
4. VS gives you Champagne (if you like that kind of stuff. I def. did & BA doesn't)

The only thing I liked about BA was that they had separate WC's for their WT+ section. VS didn't have that, although they claim with their revamping of Premium Economy product, that they will now have separate WS's as well.

Basically, Reason's #1 & #2 pretty much edge it out for me. I kinda reviewed both products in my Trip Reports when I went to India. You can read about my experience if you like. They have both airlines and some pictures of their products as well. I'm assuming you will fly out of ORD; therefore it will be an A343 if you go on VS. (that's what I traveled on when I went from LHR - BOM)

Whatever you choose, hope you have a great trip to London. It's an awesome city.
Also do let us know which airline you finally chose  Smile

Hope this helps...

Definitely VS. Their PE product is superb. Especially on the Upper deck on the 747's. The re-done seats are also great. Really comfy! Purple leather too :P

You'll be flying a 343. If all the 343's have the new PE seats, take VS for sure.

If they don't; still take VS. Just take them again when they DO have the seats too.
