At What Point Did You Stop Looking At The Pictures

Tue May 08, 2007 10:30 am

Just curious if anyone else around here went from being a hardcore pic fan, to a hardcore forum reader. I don't post much- obviously- but I spend a good part of my breaks and lunch hour reading the forum posts. I particularly like the tech/ops section, though we all know there is more post to be found here: on Civ Av.

I looked at planes for a good year before I read the forums, I just wondered how many of you guys/gals, after looking for pics for quite a while decided to check out the boards. I have found that while pics of planes are great, info about them and airlines are a much stronger and more addictive form of "av crack."

Thanks for giving me something to do and enlightening me at the same time. I pray my boss doesn't start monitoring my net connection.

That's pretty damn funny. I just browsed pics this past week for the first time in many, many months. But I can kick the forum anytime, I swear.  Wink

I'm the same way. When I think my head is about to explode from writing software, I take a break to read the forums. I don't post much either, but I love reading the discussions. However, I probably look at the pics for a few minutes about once a week. I still love the beauty of these machines in action.

Ummm... I haven't gone farther than the "Top of Last 24 Hours" or a pic linked in a thread in at least 6 months...

I agree with what you say and must add that perhaps if photographers would put a bit more effort into writing comments about their photos the latter might become more interesting.

But alas composing is sometimes a bit of a challenge for some of us and when photographs keep getting rejected some members get tired of writing and simply try their luck uploading photos with nary a comment. But hey, sometimes a good photograph is worth a thousand words.

That's just my 3 cents.

It was probably a couple of months after I started coming to the site for the pics that I noticed the forums and probably a couple more before I started posting on them. I usually check out the most popular of the last 24 hours pics but just recently I have been going deeper for more specific photos.

Uh, yeah...
I have been addicted to a.net (my college dorm buddies called it my plane porn) for many years, since about 1998.
But the pics lately aren't as inspiring as they need to be.

I mean, seriously, when I click on the newest pics added... well, how many times can I see N404US taking off out of JFK and doing the slight right bank? We have like, a bajillion of the same pics here.
I'm also kinda bitter that it's much easier for an established photographer to have a truly boring photo accepted than it is for a new guy to have a better photo accepted. But that's just my observation.

So yeah, the pics aren't doing it for me anymore.
And the forum ain't what it was in 2000, either. I miss a lot of the more knowledgeable people that used to be here. A few months ago, I went through my respected users list (I remember when that was a NEW FEATURE!!) and realized that no one on it had posted within the last six months. Sad.

So yeah, I guess things just aren't the same anymore.

I stopped pretty early on... I'll still look at an interesting pic or if I need to see something but otherwise I don't bother.
Maybe its because a lot of the screeners have some bia's when accepting pics and reject so many so its always the same old pics from the same old people (albeit many of them are amazing).

I haven't really looked at the pictures for a good year now. The odd time, I'll browse through them looking for a nice desktop background or if I'm looking for a picture to post in a thread.

I find that the standards seem to have gotten so high that the pictures have lost any sense of realism to them.

But, that's just my .02 cents.

I'm glad you guys seem to be in the same boat.

Maybe the mods will take note. ---- We aren't always looking for the most artistic, most correct contrast, or superb motive. A lot of us just want to see airplanes. I think that many of the pic gods have lost sight of what quite a few of us find to be a great picture. I for one like to see something other than a perfectly framed aircraft, gear down, on a Simpson's cloud background. I'd like to see a group of dirty panes lazily waiting for TO, at least I can relate.

I kinda wish pic rules were not quite as strict - and I don't even submit pics!

They have pictures on this website?  eyepopping  Oh, that's right. That's how I got here in the first place.

LOL. It's so true though. At first I was mesmerized by the great photos on a.net and then finally I decided to check out the forums and that was it...I was hooked. The photos faded into the background and only periodic spurts of interest in the pictures interrupt my marathon forum reading sessions. I'm not a terribly frequent poster, but I read VERY frequently. Thanks everyone for making a.net such a great place to waste time instead of doing the "honey do" list!

Best Regards,

I browsed the pictures for 2 years before I joined, then I use to read the forums for about another 6 months before I joined! I still look at the pictures, but usually only when a thread suggests something that I should be looking at!
Intresting!
Cheers!

I also dont post very much but when I do I feel I am much more articulate and have something worth saying rather than someone who has 5000 "I Agree" type posts or someone who just simply quotes multiple people in one message and respond with "yes."

But back on topic, I find myself reading the posts much more than looking at the pictures. It usually takes something that grabs my attention and different such as this post to get me to respond. When I do look at pictures, it is usually in the trip report section of the boards. I love looking at the different interiors and cabin views as well as terminals and experiences people have across the world, all in one thread!

They probably haven't bothered posting due to being flamed and argued with by a spotty kid who once flew Flight Sim and thinks he's Chuck Yeager now.

Yeah that has a lot to do with it. It became too arty farty, and not about the regos and aircraft. Photographers were being penalized for 'competing' against existing screeners at major airports. I have seen many good photos from many collections that have missed out because of this, and some not so good photos let in, solely because of the name attached to the copyright.

I look when I need to work out where I can take photos of planes at airports I haven't been to before, and what kind of fleets I can expect to log, rather than me admiring good plane photos, as I used to do.

Sometimes I take a quick look at the "Top of the last 24 hours" photos but I haven't used the photo search engine since several months. I lost interest in aviation somehow, I post mostly in the Non Aviation Forum, don't look at picture database anymore, and don't go to the airport for spotting anymore. Nowadays I rather pay 100 EUR for a good seat in the football stadium than for some flight.

I probably looked at the pics for around a year before I started to become interedted in the forums. Saying that though, the Trip Report forum is still my favourite maybe because it is a mix of text and photo's

Seriously! I came here for a picture, started looking around... found the forums, and a day later I had signed up for a Premium account. Big grin I still browse the pictures from time to time, especially from my home airport... not that there are that many though.  Sad

I too started with the pics, but only had interest in a/c I actually worked on. After I exhausted the handful of said pics, I started in the forums. Civ-av changes too fast, such as, post one day, and it is off listed in older mssgs and hard to find for a response to your input. Tech/Ops moves at a slower pace. It took me about a year of Tech/Ops before I had to sign up and contribute. It was amazing how much armchair engineers and hobbyists knew how to better fix a/c that they've never seen outside the cabin, never mind the E and E compartment. And the rare occasion of a mechanic (Engineer, for the Brits and colonists) that should have known better (holier than thou, preaching the "I've never done that, and it is wrong that you do!") This is why, when I surf Anet at work, yes between turns and on designated coffee breaks and lunch, a few of my cohorts call it "Oh, are you screaming again?" Lately though, I find myself screaming less and giving more constructive input.

For me it is the same as for many earlier posters:
I came for the pictures, found the Forums as reader only, got an forum-account after a few weeks.
About once a week I browse for unusual pics and once a month for new pics from my home base (not too many ...).

Funny thing with it is, now that I have a DSL-line at home I stopped looking at the pics ...

I found the site years ago looking for pictures of an aircraft that I flew on in 1965, and found it.
I liked what I saw in other areas and still visit at least once a week to look for pics and read news and opinions.

Ditto, except there were no Premium Accounts when I joined. Having been grandfathered in, I later paid money to get IMs - vital to badger those who work in the tech/ops side of aviation for information they might not want to reveal in the forums! IMs have enhanced my aviation experience considerably since then.  Wink

I've probably looked at less than a hundred photos since I started on the forums, almost 8 years ago... excluding the ones that are "shoved in my face" in the forums. Can you hear me, 2H4?  Smile

This is my 3rd year on A.Net to the day (may 9th) and I can say that after a while some of the pics just all look the same. It seems like there is more to learn and think about in the forums. I do love some of the classic pics here no doubt but the forums just have more power because of the interaction. Like all of the gatherings with other members and just being able to express your opinion in hot debates like Airbus vs Boeing.

Does Airliners.net even have a rival?

After joining the forum I really haven't looked at pictures other than finding a good desktop background as someone else said. The pictures are cool but it seems like the editing is getting out of hand because of the sites standards. I like a good action shot, not some dramatically edited photo. I like to see a picture of what my eyes see, not what a software can make it seem to look like. Does anyone get my point?

I go on the forums all the time for a week or two and ignore the pics, then ignore the forums for a weekish, and so on, but as many of you have said, i am spending more and more time in the forums, and less in the pics section.

When I open A.net, I open a new tab with "Most popular of the last 24 hours" and look at all the pictures plus the forums...

As I check A.net everyday, I usually do not miss a shot... But if I look at them for too long, I start dreaming  Wink
