BA Or LX For Transatlantic In J?

Tue May 08, 2007 4:47 pm

Hello to everyone. Would appreciate any feedback.
We are currently booked in BA from KBP to LAX, then AA from LAX to NYC and then BA from NYC to KBP. BA segments are in club and AA segment was surprisingly booked into First on the three class domestic.
I have found an option to fly via ZRH to the U.S. and back, with domestic sector operated by UA. All of these will be in business. This itinenary costs almost 1K cheaper than BA (saving us 2K) but it does not involve an overnight stopover in London which gives us an extra vacation day.
Now, the reason we initially booked BA is that we r Executive Club members and I wanted to earn all the miles and tier points. However, we r planning a trip to Hawaii for which we'll be flying Star Alliance and I already enrolled into Miles & More to earn miles for that trip. It seems that overall LH, OS and LX offer better connections throughout the world from KBP than BA.
I am now inclined to change tickets and fly LX to start accumulating miles with Miles & More rather than having miles here and there but not having enough for a status with either alliance. I've not flown transatlantic before and would appreciate your thoughts wether LX is on a par with BA in terms of service seats on ZRH-LAX/NYC sectors. Plus, I have always wanted to fly in the upper deck and already secured seats there on BA sectors.
So, should we switch to LX? I really like the extra day we'll be getting but then the domestic sector will be in UA J rather than AA F (is there a big difference?).

Sorry for a long and perhaps confusing post but I wanted to disclose all factors I am considering.

BA business class has gotten many awards and is truly world-class. However, a day more of vacation and 1K (don't know if that means that much for you) less would be worth it in my point of view. If you travel in J class to Hawaii, then I would say travel with LX to the US, as you might gain enough miles to get a high tier in star alliance.

I travelled in BA J upper-deck, and it was great, it is worth a try if you really want it.

In terms of standard choose BA.

In terms of time and price choose LX.

Choose the one that is most important to you.

Well, of course 1K per head is big enough savings. I do think that it's best to start collecting miles with Miles & More but I so want to try the BA product...

I would try the BA product as upper deck on the 747 is amzing. The new Club World product has now been rolled on all flights to and from JFK so you will be guaranteed this new cabin.
If you do choose to fly BA then why dont you choose to fly BA and oneworld to Hawaii? You would then collect more miles and points towards your Executive Club account

Just my t'pence worth

The schedule is rather inconvenient... There r no same day KBP-LAX or LAX-KBP connections, and LAX seems to be the getaway to OGG with AA. It's a lot of time wasted. With LH/UA one can do it in one day leaving KBP at 6:45 am...
Star Alliance airlines have about 10 departues per day from KBP and BA only one. I love BA and would prefer to fly One World but BA's single flight to KBP does not really allow to play with schedule...

LX saves you Time and Money, on two trips. It sounds logical enough to me.

Well, all of the window seats on the ZRH-LAX segment are now taken, and I am not flying in the middle... Smile
So, it does not sound that logical to me now...

I can see where your coming from. I think I would choose the best connection becasue a layover in LHR is only going to make matters worse

After all, LX's business class product is top-notch aswell, especially with the new interiors on the A343. I'd say it's definately up there with BA, well in my experience anyway. Saving 1K per head and gettingpretty much the same service, well you know what i mean. Clear case for me.

What do you mean by "taken"? Seat reservations are indeed in place with most major carriers, however a seat is not guaranteed until check-in. So if you go ahead and check in online as early as possible, there's a pretty good chance that you'll get window seats.

But hey, whatever makes you happy  Wink

Seat Requests.... in J there are always no shows, just get there early (or check in 24 hours before online) and you'll get one in all likelihood

That particular flight to LAX is fully booked in first and heavily booked in business. Only premium window seats are available and we do not have status with M&M. We won't be able to check-in online as the first segment will be PS and even if the first sector were LX they do not offer online check-in from KBP as the flight is operated by PS.

There are no middle seats in J on LX A330/340 as seating is 2-2-2. Or are you referring to the 2 center seats in the 2-2-2 layout? Actually those are my preferred seats on anything with 2-2-2 seating as you have your own access to the aisle and never have to climb over someone (or be disturbed by your neighbor climbing over you).

Yes, I am referring to those seats. I'll be travelling with my bf so there si no problem with isle access.
