Battle Of The Alliances: Sky Vs. Star

Thu May 10, 2007 5:00 am

Who's better, SkyTeam, or Star Alliance?

My Vote:
DL and CO are the top two legacy carriers in the US right now, servicewise,...IMO. I don't fly many other international airlines. But with UA and especially US in Star, I am going to have to give my vote to SkyTeam....

SkyTeam- 1
Star Alliance- 0
The proper term is "on final" not "on finals" bud...

I have only ever travelled on Star, and they have the largest network.

My vote therefore is Star  Smile

SkyTeam- 1
Star Alliance- 1

Extensive network and quality carriers, but BMI's diamond club does it for me!

Clearly

the airline network for Earth...Star Alliance

Skyteam has ZERO presence in domestic Canada, whereas Star has AC.....not to mention Skyteam has a gaping hole in the South Pacific.......add 18 carriers, and you have one of the most extensive networks in the world....

My vote:

Star Alliance.

Can't recall ever being more than 30 minutes late in over 100 flights with LH.
LH seem to have sorted LX out.
Infrequent trips with NH and OZ have been excellent.
They are the only one who have SQ; Sky Team don't have CX.

Sky Team: 3
Star Alliance: 6

Just my 5 RMB

Cheers

PS They are not perfect, though. BD, and to a lesser extent, OS could be substantially improved.

For me it's Sky.

They offer more flights from regional airports in the UK than Star does, through KLM and Air France who allow me to connect on the continent to the rest of the world. In addition Continental operate transatlantic services to many smaller UK airport such as BRS and BHX which are idea for connecting the other way - in America. In addition, I find transferring at AMS is a breeze, CDG is dire mind you, and FRA is somewhere in between.

Star Alliance: 6

An alliance needs to be global. You can't be USA-Europe centric and serve business people all over the world. There's more to business travel than the USA and western Europe. Star truly covers the globe and provides as much service to the businessman in Cape Town, Bangkok or Sao Paulo as it does to the dude in Peoria.

STAR is light years ahead of the others in terms of services and network.

Star Alliance, the best alliance in the world with the worlds best coverage. No other alliance comes any where near Star's global status. Star Alliance will get you to where you want to go, if not to the exact airport, but to a nearby airport unlike OneWorld and Sky who have big holes in their world maps

StarAlliance 7

I fly a lot within Europe on both AF/KLM and LH and AF/KLM is for me far more better then LH.
In addition, I've flown several times trans-atlantic (AF, CO, DL, UA & LH) : LH is good but UA is the worst with DL.

I have to go with Star between the two -- the coverage gaps in Skyteam are just too large on a global level.

However, if all my travel was between the US and Europe Skyteam would be okay.

Skyteam

I'd might as well support the home team (aka NW) and I absolutely loved changing planes in Amsterdam compared to Frankfurt. All we need is MH to join Skyteam then we may be on par with Star.

Star Alliance has waay too many carriers in Europe:

LH, SK, OS, LX, LOT, TP, BMI and I may have forgotten others, but bottom line is that too many of their hubs are in close proximity of each other.

SKY: 7
Star: 13

From my homebase HAJ I get the following destinations served nonstop by the two Alliances in concern:

Star:
- FRA, MUC, STR, ZRH, VIE, CPH, LHR, CDG, BRU = 9 of which 6 are *A-hubs

Sky:
- AMS, CDG, PRG = 3 (all hubs of SkyTeam)

In terms of number of services and connections, Star is the clear leader for my travel needs, but Sky has the financial advantange of being considerably cheaper from time to time (private and business travel).
Plus Sky has a monopoly on the HAJ-AMS-route which is almost used as "corporate shuttle" by the company I work for. If LH would add one morning and one evening rotation from HAJ to AMS (and back), similar to how they serve BRU (where the Head Quarters of my employer is), I think they would get a really positive reaction - especially if they were to have better timings than cra**y 0600h departure offered by KL.
On the negative side, I have to say I hate connecting flights at CDG T2 (like I have expressed many times before).

(OneWorld no longer serves HAJ from either LHR or LGW, so it is completely out of scope for my travel planning).

Frequent Flyer programs:
Flying Blue (aka. Flying Poo) has been critizied too often already by others; my personal experience with them is:
- it is difficult to get a Business Class Award flight avross the Atlantic Ocean.
- It is even more difficult to get get back money and miles if one has to cancel an Award flight.
- They credit only 150% in Business Class Longhaul, while requiring the same 90 000 miles for a.m. return between Europe and the U.S. in Business Class.

Miles&More:
Far from perfect but IMO and for my needs it is still better than Flying Blue.

Bottomline:
STAR ALLIANCE

SKY: 8
Star: 15

I just joined Miles & More the other day and claimed retroactive credit on two IAD-MUC-FLR segments; that should put me off to a nice start. Miles & More is incredible- all of Star Alliance, plus AP, A3, 9W, QR, KM...list goes on! Not to mention transiting through MUC after a 7:30hr flight from IAD 8 times a year- what a breeze.

Oh yeah, and Skyteam? You can keep CDG and MXP.

Hard to say. Star Alliance is good because I can at least get points for domestic flights within Canada, plus it's easy to get points on either AC or LH on my flights to and from Canada and Germany. But, SkyTeam does have KL (my favourite airline) as a member, so it's easy for me to get points with them as well.

Tough call, but I'd have to say Sky just because I book with KLM more then I do with AC or LH when going Trans Atlantic.

There is also Air France's codeshare with Qantas, and out of CNS you can fly CO but I agree extremely limited service to Australia/NZ/South Pacific. Out of my closest airport (CHC) KE is the only Skyteam carrier and they only fly seasonally and less than daily when they do fly so its STAR all the way (NZ, SQ).

They have SQ, SK, NZ!

I have a TG Frequent Flyer card, with loads of points and easy tier status achieval!

Also, they have a good network to PER, especially when I fly PER-OSL.

true, but there's something ironic about using a Oneworld carrier as proof of Skyteam's destination coverage - not to mention: try getting a Skyteam award itinerary with DL or CO or NW miles on either of these 2 routings and you'll be SOL...

In terms of Frequent Flyer friendly, no doubt my vote goes to Skyteam.
I am a Premier Executive Mileage Plus (UA - Star Gold) and a Flying Blue Platinum (AF - Elite Plus). Whenever I fly an alliance partner airline with Skyteam my points are credited within a matter of days. Whenever I fly an alliance partner airline with Star my mileage never shows up, I spend time writing to incompetent people at UA's Mileage Plus only for them to write back asking for additional information I had already provided them with and clearly spelled out in my letter.
For US carriers, UA and US (the "Five Hour Flight in First Class with No Meal Service" Airline) suck big time compared to service levels of DL and CO.
I am a big Europe - USA - Latin America flier and Star basically does nothing for me there, with AM and shortly CM in Sky in LatAm, they have it hands down in that region of the world.
Plus, despite what everyone says on this site, there are no flight attendants/stewardesses that can match the class and elegance of those on AF, and yes I have flown Singapore and their "Girls" who just come off as submissive, uninteresting, faceless, ingratiating bi-peds.

So,
Skyteam: 12
Star: 21

OW is by far the best.

The mid east is covered by RJ, LAN is king in south america. AA is huge in north america, Europe is more than covered, as is asia and australia. The only issue is Africa, but BA has a few Africa fligts in Sth. Africa.

Gaping hole in the South Pacific on Skyteam, I don't think so, CO flies to several little islands and Australia. Along with KE's service.

Skyteam.

Forgot to add what about everyones big gap throughout Asia and Eastern Europe (Kazakstan) etc. Nobody has that covered better then Skyteam... in fact only Skyteam really covers it.

Star-
Good:
Air Canada, US Airways, United, SAS, Lufthansa, LOT, Swiss, South African, Thai, Singapore, ANA, Air New Zealand

Poor- (airlines that don't really offer much/add to network)
BMI, LOT, Span Air, Austrian, Asiana

Sky-
Good-
Aeroflot, Aeromexico, Air France, Alitalia, Continental, Delta, Korean Air, KLM, Northwest

Poor-
CSA, don't add a lot to the network.

Oneworld-
Good-
American, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, JAL, LAN, Qantas, Royal Jordanian

Poor-
Iberia, Malev

Just my opionion anyway.

As much as I support CO, and as much as I love AF, Star's got a better global network, plus more quality asian carriers. It's really a no-brainer.
