The Longest You Slept On A Plane?

Wed May 23, 2007 2:31 pm

It's my biggest nightmare. I can not sleep on a plane. On a 30 minute bus ride, I can sleep like a baby but on a plane, I just can not. The only exception was on a night TK flight from HKG to IST. I had two seats to myself and managed to sleep a whopping 6 hours. Even in business class, I never got so much sleep...

A friend of mine told me that once she fell asleep before taking off in AYT and woke up after landing in LGW on a charter flight  Smile She doesn't remember a thing about the flight....

How about you? What's your record?

I dont like sleeping much on flights but on some I just have to especially red eyes. My best was LAX-AKL I slept half the flight by sleeping 7 hours. But than when I flew back to the US on LAX-SYD I only slept about 3 hours so I spent much of my time walking around and playing some video games and watching movies etc..

Wouldn't these routings be "trans pacific" ? Or were these flight be routed via Europe ? D:

Quoting TurkishWings (Thread starter):
I can not sleep on a plane.

In general, longhaul in Economy Class was too uncomfortable for me to sleep. Longest time I managed was about 2 hours flying from VRA to Germany (original destination was DUS but that airport was still not opened after its fatal fire, so we flew (I am avoiding to say "diverted") to CGN).
Reason for my sleep was, that the flight was delayed by some 4 hours which were spent stripping VRA's Duty-Free shop of almost all Canadian Beer while others downed Havana Club in incredible speeds.

Longhaul in Business Class from the U.S. to Europe usually it is between 1 and 3 hours, supplemented by some(relaxing) napping.

The Longest You Slept On A Plane?

Hi!

If I fly transatlantic westbound I never sleep, normally the flights are during the day so I take time to see some movies ( if the IFE is quite good I can take 2 or 3 movies....) and when I start to see land I normally follow a bit. On transatlantic eastbound and because most of the flight is at night I can take a nap of 2/3 hours. On my flight to KIX from AMS I took sometime in the first stages of the flight to see the land, passing by Scandinavia, Baltic Republics and Russia, then the night came and I saw 3 movies, then I saw again the sun coming up and kept a track on the final stages of the flight. On westbound flight from KIX the flight was all during the day and because our plane still had those "global screens" (KL 744)
I was looking outside most of my flight and checking out the impressive sights of Siberia...absolutely unbelievable!!! On my flight southbound from LIS to GIG the flight was also during the day so I saw some movies and checked outside ( when we cross the South Atlantic and reach the first land, in northern Brazil, we still have around 4/5 hours over land...). On northbound the flight was again at night so again a nap and that's fine!!!

I find it difficult to sleep on flights. I dozzzzz off usually right after take off, especially on early morning flights, but wake quickly. When I took flights to AMS, GUA, Rome, and Nairobi, I slept very little.

Last year I flew LAS-IAD with TED, the flight was early in the morning (around 8am) and I had spent the day before driving from the Grand Canyon and then visiting the casinos almost all the night so I didn't sleep to be on time at the airport...
I was in the first row and the seat next to me was empty but couldn't use it because of the tray table located in the armrest. After a "few minutes" of interior complaints about the uncomfortable position I realized that we were in fact about to land in IAD !
I've never had the chance to fly in C or F but I was very lucky on my longest trip to date. Flying MEL-SIN-BKK-SIN-BKK-FRA-BRU with SQ / Air Asia / LH I had an empty row on EVERY flight excepting the last leg FRA-BRU !

Normally about 2 hours on a transatlantic... 0 hours on a domestic (USA)

There was this one time though, i was flying from EWR to TLV on CO 90 i fell asleep right after T/O and when i woke up we had about an hour left for the flight... (all in all i slept about 9 hours on the flight). How did i do this? I donno. I remember being up for about 26 hours prior to the flight!

Last December we were flying from AUH-MAN on EY and i was also a bit ill. I remember sitting down, falling asleep, and waking up just as we started the take-off roll(apparently we were delayed by 1 hour). I then fell asleep again and did'nt wake up until we were just near Manchester! I was so shocked because i normally can;t sleep on planes! I must have slept for some 6 hours.

I cant sleep on a plane. I cant absolutely not sleep on the flights from Europe to Los Angeles ( I make Europe-Lax t/r almost every summer and winter) because this is usual during the day. But the longest i have slept is about 1-2 hours and that is on the inbound flights from LAX to ARN.

One of the longest (relative to the duration of the flight) would probably be about 7 hours on a 10 hour 30 minute flight from Jo'burg to Frankfurt on one of SAA's A340-600s... in Y-class... before they increased the seat-pitch...  Smile ... I have no problem sleeping on planes...

Other than that, I think I slept around 8 hours on a slightly longer FRA-HKG flight on CX - and there are a couple of C-class flights, on which I cannot even really remember being awake much, aside from boarding, eating dinner and deplaning. Big grin

The solution is Tylenol PM! My professor recommended we bring this with us to China, and as a result, I ended up sleeping 7.5 hours in United economy plus from PVG-ORD!! I plan on bringing it on all future long haul flights.

I can't sleep in cars or planes very well.

DFW-KIX, slept maybe 45 mins (13 hour flight)
BOM-LHR, slept maybe 30 mins (9.5 hr flight)
HUX-DFW slept maybe 1 hr (4hr flight) though the flight departed at 0200 and arrived at 0600 and had some drinks (on AA-charter)

I have not tried any sleeping aids, yet..Just alcohol.

The longest I have slept was on an AF flight from HKG to CDG. Normally I don't sleep at all, but it was nearly midnight and that day I had walked all over Hong Kong island and then walked literally right around Macau before taking the last ferry to the airport at 9pm, so I was shattered! After dinner on the flight I dropped off to sleep and woke up somewhere over Germany, about half an hour from landing; I must have slept for 10 or 11 hours in total, as the entire flight was nearly 14 hours due to very strong headwinds. After that I had another flight to BHX and then a full 9 hours in University, nobody believed I had just flown all that way! Big grin

The most I have slept is maybe an hour. Slept on a flight from KIN to JFK, but that was because the flight left close to midnight. I also managed about an hour, maybe 90 minutes, on a red-eye from LAX to BWI. Otherwise, it is impossible for me to sleep on a plane. I dread my first real long-haul flight. That may come soon enough., either to ICN from the East Coast of the US or to Croatia (if I am lucky).

Usually I can't fall asleep on airplanes. If I do they're just small 10 to 15 minute naps. The longest I have had is about an hour.

I've slept tons on planes...I usually don't because, well, I love the experience, but sometimes it can't be helped.
Especially if I've been up for a day or two straight.

Flights I really don't remember include:

AMS-SFO on KL
SFO-TPE on BR
KUL-FRA on MH
SIN-NRT on NW

and a zillion times on the 6:30am CO flights from FLL to IAH  Smile

I'd say I slept for 90-95% of a FRA-DTW flight on NW. The rest of the time I was in that half-asleep mode.

Thats some people who I know. I once was traveling with my friend, he just found his seat and drifted of to sleep, and I had to wake him up once landing in DEL from SIN

For me I barely ever get sleep, maybe 10-15 minutes of nap, but thats all

On my recent trip from DEL - SIN, I didnt sleep at all the night before my departure, so I could sleep on the plane. I managed the final 1.5 hours of the flight where I had to be woken up by three flight attendants and the person sitting next to me

I'm always in economy and I can't sleep on planes. I'll get maybe 30 minutes of actually being asleep, but the other hours are just me with my eyes closed trying to sleep. I'm young. I can handle no sleep for day.

On planes, not at all. In my car, as a passenger usually it is also a zero. But as of late, I find it to be a little easier to fall asleep, sometimes completely. I always find it weird how the moment I wake up, we are just turning onto the street my house is on. However, once I get into my bed after doing this, I find it much harder to sleep!

About 4 hours is my longest sleep. SIN-FRA Singapore Airlines economy class. I fell asleep for four hours, then woke up, and went to sleep soon after again.

Hopefully I can beat that record on my raffles class flight from SIN-CPH in June.

A flight from JFK-SNN. fell asleep before take off, and woke up in time for breakfast.
In terms of flight duration, there was the time I was flying STN-SNN, I fell asleep 2 minutes after take off, and woke up about five seconds before touch down (honestly!). I don't even remember closing my eyes.

The longest is maybe 15-20 minutes and only on a few occasions, was alcohol induced/influenced. Even when I come back from Las Vegas after several days of staying up late, sleeping a handful of hours a night and not taking any naps, the most I've been able to manage is from about the point the flight was flying over the Grand Canyon until we were over ABQ. Even when I was taking 8-9 am non-rev flights after working the night before (and in some cases only getting 2-3 hours of sleep because I went out drinking after work) I very rarely slept.

There's been times when I've really wanted to take an hour or two nap on a transcon flight, but can barely manage 5 minutes. Nothing like getting up at 4:30-5 am for work, working until early afternoon then taking an early evening transcon and wanting to catch some ZZZs because by the time you get to your destination, you would have been up close to 20 hours and were planning to stay up late where you were going.

I've never tried taking a red-eye, mainly because I've assumed that I won't be able to sleep at.

I could never fall asleep until i started flying almost weekly and it became one of the only places i had time to sleep. The best effort i had was after 14 cougars and a big night out, i fell asleep on the ground and 3.5 hours later woke up on the other side of australia, again on the ground. I was pleased with myself.

Mine was probably DFW-SEA on an American S80. It was the red-eye and having flown in to DFW from TPA earlier we were all tired from the layover. Not to mention, I had stepped in a fire ant mound before leaving our house for the airport, and my whole left foot was swollen really bad. I fell asleep before take-off, and woke up as were were on short final in SEA. It was probably 3 hours and 30 minutes that I slept. Also, LAX-ATL on a Delta L1011. I was 7 years old and slept the entire red-eye flight. I have also done a 6-hour IAD-SFO on United, but I didn't sleep once. God Bless.

My problem is not falling asleep if we have a delay  Cool I take a mix of sleeping pills and muscle relaxants before every flight longer than 2 hours that guarantees me a wonderful, backpainless trip.

But I remember being in Miami waiting for our AA flight to start boarding and it took so long my kids had to half carry me aboard  Wink then I slept all the way to CCS. Also on transatlantic flights it does wonders for me, I spend the whole 10 hours ( like MEX-AMS) out like a candle.
I wish that all skies were orange and blue!!

I once hit the hay for about 3 hours on a five hour flight. And being the aviation geek that I am, I am surprised that I feel asleep at all...

I missed 2 landings! That was a dumb mistake.

In Economy the most I have ever slept is about 1 hour and 30mins on a 13 hour flight, it really is my worst nightmare (my next set of flights should be interesting!) I've done business class from JFK to LHR and managed to sleep for just under four hours which I thought was pretty good considering the flight is only about 6hrs 30mins.

I generally don't sleep on planes, I love flying and I don't get to do it as often as I'd like, so I don't like to waste a minute of it. However, If I do get tired, I will grab a few zzz's if I can. Only on my eastbound Trans Atlantic flights, I'll probably grab 3 hours or so. I think the most I've slept on a flight was 6 hours. I don't ever recall sleeping on a westbound Trans Atlantic and only once on a trans continental flight.

11 Hours on SQ's EWR-SIN in Raffles Class.

You might not like me for it, but I had a couple glasses of wine and just relaxed since the flight left at 11pm and arrived at 5am. It was honestly the best flight of my life. So many red eye flights are just too short. You don't have enough time to sleep and feel exhausted. Well an 18 hour redeye is a nice experience. On the otherhand an 18 hour day flight isn't so much fun.

I fell asleep once for about 6 hours in the flight deck of a LR25 while waiting for a paitent ambulance to arrive at an airport in Puerto Rico. I was zonked out as you might guess because to comfortably sleep in a Lear flight deck is no easy task being 73 inches tall. When I was a kid I passed out on a DL 727-200 from JFK to TPA after diverting there from LGA on another 727 after a bad compressor stall on climb out. I fell asleep before push back at 9PM and the departure que was soo long we did not get off the ground untill about 11:45 or so. I woke up during the takeoff roll which is how I know. I continued to sleep untill we got to the gate at TPA around 2 A.M. and my aunt had to force me to wake up and get off the plane. I was than wide awake because the media was at the gate waiting for us inbound and this was in 1996. . I also passed out once on a shuttle non reving from DCA to LGA to get home for the whole flight. I just do not sleep in the air normally.

Although I have flown ransatlantic many times, I am lucky it I get 2 hours of sleep at a time! However one time in the 90's I flew AA YYC-ORD, seat 16A. I had been out with friends all night and did not go to sleep. I was asleep before the door was closed and was awaken by a FA at the gate at ORD. I was confused and sort of sad as I love flying the MD80's!
flown on..DC9, DC10, MD 11, MD80's, A319, A320, A330, L1011, B727, B737, B747, B757, B767, B777,CRJ,E70 gear up?

I usually don't sleep well on planes but did have one great flight from NRT to CPH in SK business in X-mas 1996. I was working in Tokyo at that time and finished all billings, etc. around 3:00 AM in the morning. Took a taxi to my flat, packed my suitcases, went to the local convenient store to buy some typical Japanese snacks for family and friends back in Germany, took a shower and left for NRT on local trains. Got to the airport around 10:00 AM (approx. 26 hours after sleeping the last time), checked in for my flight, dragged myself to to the gate and passed out as soon as I was seated on the B767. Didn't eat or drink during the 10 hour and 50 minute flight but slept almost the entire way. On the short hop from CPH to HAM had a beer and was greeted by lots of friends and family ready to party during the X-mas holidays.

Cheers,

Peter

Closed my eyes as we started down the runway at LAX, opened them during mild approach turbulence 10 miles from MIA. Tylenol PM... it's a miracle  Smile

When I was younger I loved flying so much that I would keep myself awake as long as possible, now i always manage to get some sleep on long or night fligths!

my best sleep so far has been on the QF Skybed (Business Class), since I take the AKL-LAX-AKL flights a lot, as long as im not hyped up on sugar or watching a good movie, I can get up to 6 hours of sleep. I'm sure I could sleep longer on the beds, but I like to enjoy the service as well!

for american domestic travel I can sleep well on the AS First class seats that have headrests! On the last flight I took with AS I did something that I have never done before, I fell asleep before we took off and awoke as we were decending, raised my chair and fell back asleep only to wake up when the lights in the cabin came back on! (it was a red eye on the 737-800, so with the headrests. ANC-SEA)

Slept 9 hours of a 14 hour flight on a DL HKG-LAX flight back in the mid-90s when they had the route. This was aided by the several Amaretto cocktails I enjoyed in biz class prior to my slumber. I'm usually good for 3-4 hours of solid sleep in the premium cabin trans-atlantic.

My record:

9 hours TPE-SEA (10 hours flying time?)
(immigration)
5 hours SEA-EWR
(30 min ground transport, not driving)
5 hours in bed until sunrise

14 hours sleeping in the air + 5 more on the ground.

I had a little chemical assistance (not ethanol).

Quoting LAXspotter (Reply 1):
basically long transatlantic flights btwn LAX-NRT or TPE-LAX

Transatlantic would be a long way to get there!!  Silly (just teasing)

Domestic sleep record -- 45 min, after a week of only sleeping 5 hrs per night......only time i've slept domestically in Y.

On CO 777, Y, CDG to IAH, 2 hrs.....after a touring all over Paris for a couple days....(even more unusually, day flight).

on DL 767, C, CVG -- FCO, 4 hrs dozing in and out (not much "proper" sleep), after good food and a couple of drinks.
Can I have a mojito on this flight?

worst hangover ever! After 7 days of hard partying with some old friends, i had no choice but to curl up in the foetal position and pass out. It was probably the worst sleep of my life, i dun think i ever knew we were in the air. good times though

There is usually a bit of tossing and turning when you sleep in the air, even in First and Business with a lie-flat seat. The best sleeps I have had have been in F and J on QF, BA and AF: Transpacific, Kangaroo Route and CDG-NRT-CDG: typically 8-10 hours max on one leg of 12-15.5hrs.
When all's said and done, there'll be more said than done.
