Overflight Same As Visiting? Your Opinion

Wed Jun 06, 2007 8:07 pm

Would you guys say that overflying a state/province or country can be considered visiting the country. Granted you may not be touring said area on land but you are technicaly within its borders. Example being I overflew Kentucky can I saw I was in or visited Kentucky if ever asked what statews Ive been to?

Overflying: no
Airport transit: no
The minimum for me is spending a day and even then, it's just "I've spent a day in so and so"

lol, my best friend (79 countries) and I (73 countries) are doing a contest to try and visit the most countries in the world.
We always argue what counts or what not and try to bend the rules in our benefit. If landing somewhere but staying on board the plane doesn't count, I have to scrap Azarbaijan but he has to scrap Iceland and the Ivory Coast from his list. If changing planes but staying within the airport territory, I have to scrap Russia and India, but he has to erase Libya. If you have to spend at least 24 hours or overnight, he has to erase Argentina, Paraguay and Birma as well and we will both loose Macau.
So we wish there would be a definitive answer on this question Big grin

I would have to say NO. This is probably backed up with Dept. of State policy. US air carriers are allowed to overfly Cuba but are not allowed to land there. I have flown over Cuba many times but have never visited there.

I would have to say: NO.
I am a statistics geek, I keep a flight log and also a country log. This way I know exactly how many hours I’ve spent in each country [1.USA: 4728 hrs (197 days / 6.5 months), …., 21.Switzerland: 2 hrs]. Even if I visited a country for only a few hours, it still counts as a visited country.
But overflying a country, that’s a different thing. I would have liked the idea, because I could have added more countries to my country log, but unfortunately I would be lying to myself.

Touching the ground implies visiting. Overflying means a nice view (if weather cooperates).

Overflying does not count.

Kind of like: Does watching sexual intercourse mean you have done it?

If that were the case, I sure as hell would have visited a lot of Africa! When in reality, I visited one city.

I have overflown Canada 32 times but have never landed there! I can't say that I've been to Canada if I haven't actually been there.

I don't really consider that I have been to Germany, though I have transited FRA twice and ridden a train that entered and exited Germany from Austria but didn't stop.

I think considering you have been there if you overflew it is....cheating!
See, I knew American Eagle was first class all along!
