What An Ugly Plane...

Fri Jun 08, 2007 11:11 pm

I'm sorry if this ruffles some feathers, but boy the A380 is ugly... This is a great picture, but IMHO, I just think its really ugly, especially since its unpainted. Ick.

Anyone have any other "ugly ducklings" per se?

I think the A380 isn't that good looking either. I think the best looking Airbus is the A340.

My votes for ugliest airplane would be an Argosy and a Shorts 360. The crazy looking thing that was made out of a DC-4 was ugly too.

The WhaleJet looks a whole lot better painted than unpainted. Once it's painted it looks rather normal except that the cockpit windows seem tiny relative to the rest of the aircraft.

A340

To be more precise, IMHO the best looking airbus is the a345, followed by the a330. But overall I'm a Douglas fan (aestetically that is). Nothing beats their tri-jets and DC9 family (including the MD80's and "Douglas"717).

While I don't think the a380 is a beauty, I really don't find it ugly either, especially when painted. I just find it very impressive looking.

Now that one's been beaten with an ugly stick!!!

The carvair is not that pretty either indeed...

the superguppy is the ugliest plane by far, just do a quick search for it in the photo section or on google and you'll know what I mean.....

Well that green is hideous but I find the A380 to be a nice looking plane.
I also find the Shorts 360 to be a neat aircraft and I wish I could fly on one if there are any left.

I might get flamed for this but I find the 757-300 and A321 to be very unattractive planes. Especially if it just has a white fuselage and painted tail.

I am not too excited about the 787 either. Yes it will be a leap forward in efficiency and will keep many at Boeing employed which is all a good thing. From an aesthetic standpoint it just looks like another twin.

I think the A380 is a very good looking a/c. It's huge nd could never look agile but I think its nose is quite pretty.

Im not keen on the DC10/MD-11 nose, but they aint too bad

Ugliest is probably the 736, I aint keen on the 737 looks anyway, but the 736 looks silly

Funny you should mention that. I believe that Shorts is taking the double tail off several Shorts 330's and replacing them with the single tail of the Shorts 360... effectively converting Shorts 330's into Shorts 360's. I have been told that this is in order to aid in carrying more cargo. The Shorts 360 is actually one of my most favourite aircraft.

I believe you have to see the A380 flying in real life before judging it. It's not actually that bad up close in person. To be honest I think the 800 model would look better than the 900 model (if the A380-900 is finally produced).

The Boeing 747LCF would get my vote as an ugly duckling along with the super guppy.

I don't find the A-380 elegant in the same way that I find the A-330, for example, but I do find it aesthetically inoffensive. I think it will be a better plane in the end for passenger airlines than the newer B-747 variants. Executives rarely buy airplanes for looks (more like never since the beancounters took over the purchasing decisions post-deregulation), they buy them because they believe they can maximize their profits with them. The true test of the A-380 will be after it has been in passenger service a few years, when airlines reflect on their investments and decide to either order more or dispose of their fleets. Then and only then will we know for sure whether the A-380 is "successful." As for ugly, I guess ugly is in the eye of the beholder, but it seems like you went out of your way to pick the least flattering photo you could find of an A-380, so you obviously have an emotional attachment to the premise of your thread.

Out of jetliners, I find that the B773 is by far the ugliest airplane in the skys. It's too long, the wings and engines seem out of place for the length of the aircraft, and the 777 has the ugliest tail to boot.
