Wed Jun 13, 2007 10:52 am

http://money.aol.com/usnews/general/...-at-all-costs/20070606110209990001

With only a vague reference to being calculated by comparing delays and "crowded flights," here's their lists-

WORST-

1. DTW
2. ORD
3. CLT
4. JFK
5. EWR

BEST-

1. OAK
2. HOU
3. SJC
4. DAL
5. STL

What do you guys think? Are they whistling Dixie? Or do you agree?

Evidently these people haven't been to the magnificent McNamara terminal. Detroit is one of the most modernized airports in the US and in 2008, all the facilities will be 5 years old or younger. This servey is outrageous, look at the best airports list, where is DFW? IAH? PIT? DEN? ...

Exactly what I was thinking... DTW is a great airport. That's why I wonder where they got their "data" from for the survey.

I agree. I love taking NW through DTW. By far my favorite connecting terminal. It's easy to navigate and looks amazing. I have no idea where these ratings are coming from...

Quoting ShannoninAMA (Reply 3):
ORD was quite bearable in my eyes.

 checkmark

While far from the best airport in the nation, it is also far from the worst. A lot of parts are crowded, but many other look quite nice.

Quoting San747 (Thread starter):
3. CLT

An okay connecting airport. Nothing special really stood out to me last time I was there. Wouldn't say it belongs on the bottom five list...

The final verdict...another worthless survey.

I love HOU, just not the main airline that flies there.  Wink

DAL, is very old, it reminds me of the old HOU. Hopefully they will revamp there, like they did with HOU. I fly to DAL quite often.

How the hell did CLT end up on the bottom five? I think PHL deserves to be in that spot.

I think a lot of these "worst" airports are victims of their size. They're major connecting hubs for legacy carriers, and thus see significantly more passengers than the "best" airports. Thank God MIA wasn't there (and before you say anything, check out Concourses A and J and the higher gates of Concourse D).

The survey is pure BS. Just because a major airport is in America's least favorite city doesn't mean it should get bad rankings.

For flying into DTW, it's an amazing terminal on one end and two piles of crap on the other with a new terminal under construction in between. I just wished it had more windows personally, but at least it will be a welcome change from the Smith Terminal.

Every time I've flown out of here, my flight has been delayed at an average of 20 minutes. In my opinion that's pretty small compared to what I've put up with every now and then.
The air in the clouds is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious because it's the same the angels breathe.

Foolish story. Compares apples to oranges in my opinion. The title of the article states "Avoid at All Costs?" If you avoid JFK, ORD, EWR, I think you've limited a lot of airlines and destinations! I can go only so far from DAL. And the drive there isn't always smooth.

Anyone seen the poll is 'Airports of the World' magazine, as done by the Airports Council International? They are broken down by size, international and domestic, but overall, the top 5 (they don't list the bottom feeders) in the U.S./Canada are:

1. DFW
2. Halifax
3. Ottawa
3. Detroit (tied w/Ottawa)
5. San Diego

Oddly, in the same article, a different poll lists the top 5 domestic airports in the U.S./Canada as: (It does not say what the difference is between this and the above mentioned poll)

1. Austin
2. Halifax
3. Ottawa
4. DFW
5. San Diego

Of course, it's all subjective, but AUS would be high on any list I can think of.

Agree 100%

How could any "Worst 5" list not include ATL? Other than the ridiculously overlong escalators to the "Transportation Mall" and the outrageous prices at Checkers, I have no major complaints about the facility itself. But the interminable weather and ATC delays make it miserable to connect at.

Well the reason we are judging it like we are is because even though they may have only compared delays, they named the list "BEST and WORST".

Pretty telling that virtually no passengers make connections at any of their top five airports. Typical AOL front page "story" filler.

What is up with all these surveys trying to say airports suck because of "crowded flights"???

I honestly don't care one bit if my flight's crowded or not. Actually, I enjoy it, because I know the airline's making money.

This survey, and all the rest, is just pure BS.

The report was mainly focusing on delays - and for all LAX's faults (and there are a lot of them!), it has relatively few delays compared to most large US airports.
