Do You Prefer CRJ Or ERJ?

Wed Jun 20, 2007 10:59 pm

Yesterday I flew for the first time a ERJ (Embraer 145, Regional, subsidiary of Air France) and to my surprise, the experience was good. I had have an horrible sensation of cramped sardine on Bombardier CRJ (-200 and -900, Air Nostrum). Thus, for me no point in comparing both planes: Embraer wins hands on. I appreciated very much the very big windows (one for each row of seats; by the way this is not the case on CRJ-900). My question concerns also the economics of both planes: are CRJ so much cheaper? Thank you for your comments. Regards

40-50 seat group: ERJs. By 50 miles. I don't like the smaller CRJs nearly as much as I do the ERJ.
70 seats: Toss-up...The E70 is nice, but the CR7 isn't bad either.
90+ seats: I've only been on the CR9, so it wins by default.

Oh, the ERJ. I loathe the CRJ in every single regard, especially the 50 seater, and especially seats 1A and 1D.

ERJ by default. I get on the CRJ in three weeks, and then I can officially say "ERJ HANDS DOWN!" Can't beat 1-2 seating!

Well, I like the CRJ-700. The -100 and -200 series on the other hand take second place to the jungle jets IMHO.

ERJs win with the fifty seaters by MILES (i absolutely hated MSP-CVG on a CR2 last year..), but i actually prefer the CRJ-700 and the CRJ-900 to their embraer counterparts. Just my opinion  Smile

Never been on an ERJ, been scheduled 6 times, but 4 cancellations, and 2 changes all lead to 737's. Out here in CA, all we have are CRJ's (UAX OO).

The only RJ I have ever been on is a Mesa CRJ2, and that was for a quick PHX-TUS flight. I didn't have any problems with the plane and the landing was extremely smooth. The flight was at night, so I wasn't trying to look outside. The F/A also gave each passenger a small water bottle in flight, which was nice for the short hop.

The CRJ wins for me, by default. The Next Gen CRJ's with bigger windows, etc. look promising.

ERJ, all models. CRJ 100/200 series are horrible, while the 700 and 900s aren't bad, but i still prefer the Ejets.

Hey everyone - this is my first post on a.net wave ! I've flown on a CRJ once and it was tolerable - albeit it was only a 1 hour flight from SDF to ATL on ASA (CRJ200). It was definitely quite cramped  crowded  and I had to crane my neck to look out the window; definitely not a comfortable airplane. I know the CRJ700's & -900's are more comfortable, but not as nice as the Embraer E-Jets. Overall, the CRJ is OK for flights that are less than an hour-any flight longer than that and they're not so tolerable.  twocents

About 8 years ago I had my first ever flight in a CRJ here in Australia, it was operated by Kendell Airlines and compared with the F27s that I used to have to take it was the best thing at the time, I loved it.
I had to wait till I went to the USA to get in an ERJ and found them to be even better and I wished they had them here. I loved the ERJ135 so much I even got a desk top model of one and tried as much as possible to fly ERJs every time I went to the USA, I even managed to book a trip across the USA from LGA to LAX with 3 stops and all in RJ's including one in a CR7 which was the newest at that time and then backed that up with the 14 hour flight home! People thought I was nuts, I'm still alive and very much enjoyed the trip. . The ergonomics for passengers of the CRJ 100 and 200 are not that fantastic and there the ERJ is a whole lot better. They both however do their intended job very well. Any airline thinking of a 50 seater jet could make either of these work for them, there is not that much between them when all costing is factored in. Many times I have seen A netters complaining how "cramped" an RJ is when we all know that a 50 seater will be smaller and it shouldn't be a surprise not to see 10 abreast seating with twin aisles.
I remember when the DC-3 was new!

I've been on all 3 CRJ types-

-200... hate. I'm 6'2", the lavs are too small. Probably couldn't handle it on a flight longer than an hour.
-700... not too bad. Then again, it was QX and there was an attractive FA on my flight.
-900... I dug it. I had the whole row to myself. Almost felt like a mainline a/c. Good seat pitch.

The only Embraer I've ever been on is a EMB-120, but I will be travelling on an ERJ-140 next month. I have the feeling I will like it more than the CRJ-200, based on past experience, but we'll see.

I have mixed experiences on ERJ-135/140's as well as CRJ-100/200/700/900:

The low cabin ceiling on both series is only a minor issue for me, as standing 6´4" I need to bend anyhow.

I found ERJ-145 HB-JAN of LX to be very comfortable in terms of seat pitch, whereas flights on AF Regional left the "very cramped even when paying Business Class fares. Avoid them !" in my mind.

Also with the CRJ's it comes down to the operator, but usually it was a bearable seat pitch.

The bigger windows on the ERJ-140's over the CRJ's indeed is a noteable thing when it comes to views. OTOH, skies in Europe are often cloudy or flights take place in the dark ...

While not being a jet, I like flying on the EMB-120 very much (especially from LAX to SNA).

I've flown on all of the types mentioned in this thread, excluding the CRJ-900.

ERJ135 vs CRJ200: CRJ200

ERJ145 vs CRJ200: ERJ145

I like that extra bit of room in the ERJ145, but the 37 seat 135 is just a little too small for my taste.

I don't have anything to compare it to, but I thoroughly enjoyed my ride on a Comair CRJ-700. Very nice aircraft, wide seats, smooth flight, everything about it was good.

I was wondering, too. Maybe the 1-2 seating gives an impression of an wider cabin.

Me personally prefer the ERJ over the CRJ.

I've only flown the Embraer 145, not the other variants

But I have flown the CRJ 200, 700 and 900s and I much, much prefer the Embraer 145, especially the isolated seat where you get both a big window and an aisle.

Airlines I have flown the Embraer 145:
Regional for Air France
Rio-Sul for Varig (when they had them)
Luxair
Continental Express

Airlines I have flown the CRJ 200:
Comair
Mesa
ASA
Brit Air for Air France
Lufthansa Cityline
Air Nostrum
Skywest

CRJ 700
Comair
Brit Air for Air France
Lufthansa Cityline

CRJ 900

From what I hear the ERJ are much more roomier, though now there are next generation CRJ's.

There are suppose to be two new Rj's -

I flew on AC's E-190 and AC Jazz's CRJ-200, and I have come to the conclusion that
the CRJ was way nicer. I would rather be on the CRJ if I had a choice.
The E-190 was OK, but for some reason I just liked the CRJ a whole lot better.

I've flown on the AC E90, the QK CRJ-705, and the QK CRJ-200. The E90 seems to have the most spacious cabin my opinion and I suppose I don't really have a preference between it and the 705. Both are miles above the CRJ-200, however, which lacks PTVs and the majority of which are old, drabby birds with landing gears that fail after a tough landing.  Smile

never flown on an E-jet... so I can only tell about CRJ vs. ERJ... but in this regard I WAY prefer the ERJ.... the windows are almost twice as large as those little loopholes in the CRJ and as I'm often flying alone I really like the single window/aisle seat on the left...  Smile

that said, the CR7+CR9 are much better, but I stell prefer the ERJ... so my preferences are something like this:

ERJ ---> CR7/CR9 ------------------------------------------------> CR2

Flown on:

CR2:
ASA as DL Connection
OO as DL Connection

CR7:
OO as DL Connection
ASA as DL Connection
LH-Cityline

CR9:
OO as DL Connection

ERJ:
AF by Régional

I haven't been on the 705 yet, but I may be this summer.
I have seen the interior of AC's CRJ-705s and they seem to be a lot more comfortable
than their Embraers. One thing I failed to mention about the Embraer on my previous post, is that when we were descending I had the WORST pain in my ears I have ever had. My dad flew on it a few days ago and said he had experienced the same problem. On the return flight, almost the entire cabin was groaning in pain.
This is probably the number one reason why I avoid them.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Is it just a problem with AC's fleet or are all of them like this?

ERJ-170/190 are the official type certificate designations; "E-Jets" seems to be the marketing name Embraer is using for the E170/175/190/195 family.

To answer the OP's question, I prefer the ERJ-135/145 for the 1-2 seating (particularly when I get an A seat), and the E-Jets for the larger overhead bins.

Absolutely - the single seat with the big window at the proper height - perfect. I hate CRJ-100/200's with a passion, the most uncomfortable plane ever built, with horrible narrow seats and windows at hip height. Hate hate hate ! Unfortunately at NCE anyway CRJ's tend to outnumber ERJ's -

CRJ - LH, IB, AF, OS
ERJ - LG, AF

CR7/CR9 is better, but they still have 2x2 seating, and the seats are too narrow. At least the windows are a reasonable height.

Not for me they aren't Wink I prefer the CRJ, I have flown it many times with Air Nostrum on all their variants and it feels much nicer than the ERJ, more space inside, and twin baggage compartments are much more use than the ERJ's one. Still though, I prefer the 146 or a prop for regional flights.

It seems that I am one of the few crazy people here who prefers the CRJ to the ERJ. Having flown the 4 types, I prefer the 700/900 over the 200 and the 200 over the 145's. But then I am partial because the CRJ keeps me in business.

I am looking forward for my first ERJ flight tomorrow ExpressJet (CO) from EWR to DTW, sadly the return will be on a 737-500 which I have flown many time before (although only with European Carriers).
I have flown on the CRJ only once in 1998 with a subsidiary of AF. I really liked it, it was really fast during take off and we flew very high took forever to to descend.....
With the ERJ I reserved a seat in the single row just behind the wing

ERJ over CRJ because of the 1:2 seating

I personally hate the ERJ's I feel cramped more so than the CRJ. I would pick a CRJ over an ERJ (50 seat versions, haven't been on the larger ones quite yet.).

ERJ because I usually get the single seat!

I'm all about the ERJ-135 or the ERJ-145.

For 50 seaters, the ERJ is a no-brainer in my book. I fly mostly Delta Connection when it comes to regionals, and I've noticed that the exit rows on the 50 seaters (if I have to fly coach on any plane, it's going to be the exit row) have little padding and no extra room pitch-wise. It's fine if there's no one next to me (thankfully Delta only lets Medallions pre-reserve exit rows, so it limits the amount of people getting these seats) but put someone next to me and it's not fun.

As for the CRJ-700, exit rows are great - about 5-6 extra inches of legroom on that bird. Regular seats are horrible though (I did a same-day confirmed onto a CRJ-700 a few months ago and was placed in 2A, and it was not a fun experience on a mere 300 mile GSO-CVG flight).

Can't comment on the E-170/190 (I had scheduled an E170 flight once back in May, but US Air decided to delay my inbound by quite a while, so I was reaccomodated on a nonstop PHL-GSO flight); first CRJ-900 flight is in October (LAS-SAN on US Airways); will be interesting, although I've heard less than positive reviews of US' CR9s.

I prefer the ERJ to the CRJ in the 50-seat class. The 1-2 seating is nicer, plus the windows are better situated. The plane is more aesthetically pleasing as well, since it is so slender. As far as the 170/190 vs. the 700/900 - I've only flown on the 190, so I'm not qualified to vote.

Quoting JGPH1A (Reply 35):
Absolutely - the single seat with the big window at the proper height - perfect.

Agreed 100% - the ERJ wins easily. I love to sit on the single-seat side. Someday someone will explain why Bombardier put the CRJ's windows where they did. The ERJ also has a lavatory bigger than most mainline jets, a nice touch!
